Knowledge is Power

So welcome to lore 101. Below is a brief description of why we use lores and how to interpret them. If you

have questions feel free to as! your storyteller. "ores are not the end all and be all of a character#s

!nowledge rather a lore rating is a general way of describing the level of understanding a character has

about a certain sub$ect. %his is helpful because of the e&tremely vast and confusing body of !nowledgethat#s contained within the 'hite 'olf boo!s. "ores are purchased at secondary s!ill costs.

Why Use Lores?

(irst of all you might as! yourself why do we even use lores) 'hat#s the point) 'hy can#t I $ust !eep whatI learn in*game in*game) 'ell the easy answer is that you can. It#s perfectly o!ay +if somewhat ris!y, for

you to create a starting ghoul or vampire character with no !nowledge of what he or she is what the -urse

of -aine is all about and what the -amarilla or even the asquerade is and learn everything in game.

/owever not everyone wants to begin play with a clueless neonate vampire or ghoul. Sometimes fol!s

decide they want to ma!e a vampire with a few years or decades of e&perience under their belt an ncillae

or even an lder. n lder without !nowledge of the asquerade would not last long so it ma!e sense that

you should have a way to have that !nowledge coming in.

How do Lores apply to my character?

So how do you apply the use of "ore to this problem) "et#s use Bru$ah -lan "ore as an e&ample. If I#m a

good role*player and I want to ma!e a well rounded Bru$ah I#ll probably go pic! up the Bru$ah clanboo!

and read up on the sub$ect before creating a character. Problem is the Bru$ah clanboo! covers everything

from %roile#s diablerie of the clan founder to the role of the Bru$ah gangs in the modern nights and there#sreally no reason for my character to arrive newly embraced in the world of dar!ness !nowing all of that

stuff. So what should my character reasonably !now) /ow do you separate the stuff you can#t get by

without !nowing from the !nowledge that seems li!e you#re metagaming) "ores are the answer to this

conundrum for you and for your storytellers. %hey help you set reasonable guidelines for your characters

!nowledge and leave room to grow.

In general "ore ratings brea! down li!e the following2

"ore 12 'hat a newbie3ghoul3freshly embraced !indred would !now.

"ore 42 'hat a student3neonate would !now.

"ore 52 'hat a professional3ancilla would !now.

"ore 62 'hat a scholar3elder would !now.

"ore 72 'hat a master3methuselah would !now.

What's the deal with Insider Lores vs. Outsider Lores?

'hat#s the difference between a "upine "ore and 8arou "ore) "upine lore is the !ind of information

someone that is not a "upine li!e a mortal or vampire can learn about werewolves while 8arou "ore is

what a 'erewolf can learn about themselves. %his follows with 9ampire lore vs. Kindred lore and 8host

"ore vs. 'raith lore. (or e&ample a 9ampire can learn Kindred "ore and "upine lore but not 8arou lore

and 9ampire "ore would be pretty useless to them. Below the lores are bro!en down into what is insider or

outsider lore for a Kindred.

9ampire "ore +n outsiders 9iew, Not necessary for Vampire players, but may be taken by mortals, ghouls or other supernaturals.

Eou have a comprehensive !nowledge of the MBoo! of >od<. So much so that you discount much

of it<s teachings as bias or pure fiction. By now you can pic! up almost every false word and halftruth within the MBoo! of >od< and there are many. So many that the lines blur many times over.

Eou by now own many copies of the te&t and have seen many more. ach different each as

verifiable as the ne&t.

Eou have studied the -ults surrounding both te&ts and have discovered some alarming

Eou have also researched into its history and have come to the conclusion that the original is

probably iddle astern in origin but you cannot be too certain.

Eou have noticed many of the Signs of 8ehenna mentioned in the te&t and begin to ta!e them at

face value often finding it difficult to stop yourself from e&pressing incredulity when others

Eour dreams contain endless cascades of falls words and lying letters in a multitude of dead

any of your close associates and allies may have also as!ed you to stop your research out of

involved in researching the boo!.

Eou !now how and where to lay your hands on many different copies of the MBoo! of >od< and a

Eou !now that aspects relating to -aine have been removed from the Bible and that he is

supposed to have created a line of creatures.

Eou believe that there is some truth to this tale and that these M8reater (orces< are possibly them.

Eou have also discovered that some of the mar!ings in heretical churches refer to Biblical

Eou !now of the goge2 %here is no greater a tool nor a greater hardship in the entire world of

newly embraced -ainites. It is the learning times the formal and informal education a 9entrue

receives upon his embrace. It is this stage in the development of 9entrue !nowledge that ends the

quest of those outside the clan most often. (ew of the 8angrel or the Bru$ah will ta!e the time to

learn the use behind the words of Sun %=u Plato or achiavelli. It is the pure academicschooling or the e&perience through a trial by fire from this learning period that gives you as a

newly embraced 9entrue the $ustification to posses the most basic of 9entrue !nowledge. %his part

of your learning will give you the basic ins and outs of 9entrue society and of -amarilla law.

Eou !now that an lder 9entrue is without fail always right2 neonate 9entrue without fail

shall always defer to an elder. %o contradict one<s lders even in a casual way is to invite themost horrible of retribution upon yourself and your sire. If they profess the s!y to be green then it

must be so. It is more than $ust grinning and bearing itJ a young 9entrue must live it in practice.

ny lder 9entrue be it one of your lineage or one from a distant line is to be treated as if they

Ventrue Lore ! What a released 0hilder would %now

Ventrue lore at this le#el is the basic concepts that a Ventrue learns after his release. /his is $here a

Ventrue begins to learn about things from the perspecti#e of their sires and their mentors. Some of the

#ie$points and kno$ledge belo$ $ill begin to di#erge from the uniform kno$ledge of your %goge.

+f a Ventrue is raised outside of the confines of his or her bloodline, and attain this le#el of Ventrue lore,

Eou !now your brood<s lineage plus the lineage of your sires brood and your grandsire#s brood.

Eou also can name most of the 9entrue in your bloodline unless they have been hidden or

 purposely hiding their identity.

Eou !now of the thic of Succor2 Eou !now this to be one of the true 9entrue %raditions that is

upheld without question. Perhaps no tradition sets the 9entrue more apart from other clans than

their thic of Succor. 'hile other clans such as the %remere are closely !nit and often support

members no clan has the same Qno e&cuses no e&ceptionsR practice of coming to each other<s

assistance in times of need. any Blue Bloods credit this tradition as the foundation for the clan<s

continuing strength. 'hile they might fight and compete with one another the 9entrue invariably

rally and fight as one when the time comes and a crisis is upon them whether they li!e it or not.Abserving the thic of Succor means ultimately e&tending a fellow 9entrue aid should she as! it

regardless of personal piques and desires.

Eou !now of the (irst %uesday2 %he first %uesday of every month every Primogen should calltogether the 9entrue of their city and tal! about the events and focus of the clan. Ane of the

members of the city#s council of 9entrue should !eep minutes of the meeting and transmit them tothe ?egional e&ecutives des! by the second %uesday.

Eou !now of the traditions involved in %he mbrace >ight2 %he 9entrue celebrate the night they

why not ta!e the one night of the year you<re allowed to @cut loose@ and en$oy it)

Eou !now %he %heory of the ;irectorate2 Eou have a basic understanding of the ;irectorate. %he

elders completely control the -lan. It is through their lineages and their childer that a firm

;irectorate is formed. %he power of an elder is given by pro&y to his childer and theirs to theirchilder down the chain. %he ;irectorate varies in it#s control of 9entrue some being the absolute

it entirely.

Eou !now what is e&pected of you2 ?egardless of the unique personality and methods of each

individual 9entrue there are a few things the -lan as a whole e&pect every released 9entrue to beable to do. Below is a list that is universally e&pected of everyone in the -lan.

Page 52: Lore Guide

Eou understand that the careful adherence to manners in public is something that every 9entrue

loo!s for in others of their -lan. Should someone act rudely in any way publicly they will at least

hear about it in passing in private from others of the -lan. It is born from the nature of the beast

and the control of the situation that the 9entrue find dear. >o matter the circumstance 9entrue

strive to maintain an e&ceptionally polite demeanor. %he moment the leaders of the -ainite race

begin to devolve into bic!ering and rude behavior the less noble -ainites are sure to erupt into

total chaos. Some say the 9entrue rule by their polite demeanors and by not giving others $ustification for e&ploding into fren=ied destruction.

Eou understand the ethic of -ontrol2 %he circumstances that many 9entrue find themselves placed

in requires a clear head and a crisp wit. %he 9entrue !now that once control is lost in a situation it

is almost impossible to regain that control. >o matter the situation the masses will remain only as

calm as their leader. 'hen a situation devolves the 9entrue are e&pected without hesitation or

prompting to be the picture of serenity. >othing is as unforgivable as a 9entrue who brea!s downunder fire.

Eou have heard of %he "egends2 Eou have heard whisper the names of the legendary 9entrue in

our chronicle. Eou have heard the myths and rumors that surround their aura of mystery.

Eou !now how to discern the 9alue of a 9entrue2 Eou are familiar with the system of ;ignitias and

understand the supreme importance of acting and behaving according to those concepts of worth.

Ventrue Lore What an up and comin& "ncillae would %now

/his le#el of Ventrue lore is usually ac!uired after a Ventrue makes a transition from Neonate to %ncilla.

understanding imparting their o$n bits and pieces of kno$ledge for anyone $ho has yet to li#e it to beindoctrinated into this circle of kno$ledge.

Eou !now the lineages of most of the 9entrue in your line. If you are ;ubois and someone spouts

off a fa!e ;ubois lineage you will nine times out of ten have them dead to rights +at least you can

freely question them deeper with I- $ustification,. /ave your storyteller consult you on the P-#s

lineage you are questioning if you have any questions. Eou have a greater understanding of the ;irectorate2 'hile at first it appears that the ;irectorate is

a childe3sire relationship it turns out to be much more than that. It is a very subtle method of

control that the elders utili=e to both empower the young and to e&tract their due at the same time.

'hile the most direct control still appears to be in the form of sire3childe relationship you are

aware of others outside your own line seem to have certain pull into your own lines affairs. Eou

have heard of instances where an lder answers to an ncilla in a matter of business concern.

Eou !now about the realms of control2 %he mortal realm of control is something very important to

both the 9entrue and to the -amarilla. 'ith his level of !nowledge you understand the more

advanced forms of your own chosen field of business. 9entrue lore at this level is $ustification for

an ability speciali=ation in (inance Streetwise Bureaucracy or another ability that coincides with

your business interest.

(lavius childe of %hemis childe of ercurius childe of 9eddartha childe of noch childe of

-aine.

Eou have a more intense understanding of the history of your bloodline

Eou !now of the other routes of Power2 'hile the directorate holds a direct route of power for

most 9entrue you !now now that other organi=ations e&ist within the clan that both serve needed

roles and offer power in as different form than others. 'hile even as an unreleased childe you

have heard mention of these societies you now understand at least the fundamentals of what these

societies are about. Eou can feel free to contact the heads of any ma$or society and as! an S%

Eou !now of the one to watch over the floc!2 Eou !now that the mechanics behind the choosing of

the -lanhead are comple& and political to the e&treme. %he -lanhead derives his powers from

those who support him. /e can be the right hand of the ;irectorate or he can be nothing more

than a front man to spea! for the -lan to the others of the -amarilla.

Eou are aware of all the a$or /ouses in the 9entrue -lan2 Eou are well versed in the e&istence

and basic understanding of perhaps the greatest bac!bone of the 9entrue -lan. %he a$or /ouses

are the fuel that fires the -lan and you can consider all of the information located at to be readily

available to your character.

Eou !now the %ies that Bind2 Eou understand that beyond your own bloodline and associates

there e&ist a myriad group of /ouses that control to a lesser or greater degree those who claim

membership within them. Eour own e&perience at this level gives you the history behind your own

/ouse and the rules that govern it.

Eou !now the lders who ?ule2 t this level of 9entrue lore you !now the names of most of the

lders in play. If confronted by a 9entrue claiming to be an lder and who is forthcoming with

their lineage you can determine to some e&tent the truth of their claim. %his is by no means aguarantee that you are correct in your assumption but will allow the more !nown and recogni=ed

lder players to give you a lore verification of their lder status. 'hat you !now or have heard

about the lder is up to the player of the lder and you should always consult first with them and

!eep a log of your !nowledge.

%hose who stand alone2 'hile in your primary 9entrue education you learned that the -lan and

the Blood is sacrosanct you have seen evidence now that some stand outside the traditions. 'hile

still 9entrue and far from being considered -aitiff there are those of the 9entrue who wal!

outside the rules and boundaries set by the -lan. Some call them tavist those who forsa!e the

traditions of the clan to be left alone to wander for all times. If one declares themselves to be

tavist they are still !ings but do not owe fealty nor gain benefit from the clans actions. (ew

would begrudge any 9entrue who turned down a favor to the tavist and seldom are they called

upon for favors.

Eou !now the lineages of most of the 9entrue in the bloodlines of ;ubois Khumenes ;overspi!e

where the glass ceiling comes into play as few if any ancilla ever reach the ran!s of Stragetgoi.

Eou !now of the (our /orsemen2 %he /orsemen are a mysterious coterie of 9entrue lders and

Sigils from the %hirteen but refuse to discuss their mission e&cept in the most vague way and

there are indications that the @true mission@ may vary on the /orseman as!ed. 'hat has been

Eou !now the reasons behind the bloodlines2 %here have been quiet comments by others of the

peerage that there was a distinct purpose for the embrace of each of the 15 ethuselahs of the

-lan. 'hat this purpose could be is beyond your !nowledge but you are starting to wonder how

Eou !now the /ouses and Societies2 Eou are well versed in the wor!ings of /ouses andSocieties. Eou can recogni=e all the /ouses in the clan as well as all the ma$or societies and

Ventrue Lore * What an lder )cholar ,nows
