“A Valentine’s Devotion”
What is love? The apostle Paul tells us that “Love is patient; love
is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does
not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not
rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (I Corinthians 13)
Last year I attended a reunion of my seminary classmates.
We came together to reminisce about our time together as students
and to learn about what each of our 47 years of ministry have been
like. And then, too, we shared stories about our families etc. At first
I wasn’t sure I wanted to attend, but with my wife’s encouragement I
made the trip. And I must tell you it was fantastic. It was more than
I expected and I’m glad I went.
But my goodness, how everyone has aged. The physical
appearance of all of us has changed since the last time we saw each
other at our graduation. My classmate’s facial appearance had
changed. Now we all have wrinkles on our faces, some of us guys
had or are losing the hair on our head, some had suffered from serious
illness, some had gained significant weight, etc. In short, we all have
aged and look different to some degree physically. But our basic
faces are still the same so we were recognizable to each other.
In Proverbs 27:19 (NIV) Solomon, says, “As water reflects the
face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” Definitely there is much truth to
that statement. Water, like a mirror, does not lie; our face is our
unique feature. Likewise our behavior is like a mirror that does not
lie; our behavior reflects the condition of our hearts.
If you want to know where another person’s heart is or what it is
like, observe how that person lives. Are they self-centered, boastful
and greedy? Or do they show love to their fellow citizens with hands
3
that are ready to help when needed? A person whose heart is
focused only on themselves will be obvious, even to the least
observant among us. On the one hand when I think of someone
whose heart was in the right place, I think of Mother Teresa. On the
other hand, when I think of someone whose lives reflect unloving
hearts that are concerned only about themselves, some of our
greedy politicians come to mind.
If you want to know what kind of a heart someone has, observe
how they live. Our hearts are not physically visible. They are hidden
within our bodies. But how is your heart revealed in the way you
treat other people and in the way you live? If someone were to
write about where your heart is, what would they say? Do people
see the love of Jesus reflected in your life? Amen.

Meeting was called to order by President Max Morse at 11:19 am.
Treasurers Report: 2019 was a phenomenal year finishing with $50 000 with $10,000 in rainy day fund/ memorials. As of right now the new carpet in church should be paid for. We are going into 2020 well.
Secretary's Report: The minutes for the December 15th meeting was reviewed Vicky moved to accept the minutes and Chris seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.
Pastor’s Report: Not available.
President’s Report: Max Morse had nothing to report.
Committee Reports Altar Guild: We talked about putting this together with Worship and Music. Candy will talk to Betty to see if they can make that work.
Fellowship: Annual Valentine’s Dinner on Sunday February 9th: lasagna for dinner, Luebkes will decorate, Brenda and Candy doing games and encouraging people to bring pies for dessert. Lorraine will check into another bowling afternoon.

Old Business: Carla Jakeway’s 1-year term will be filled by Stacey Biberdorf.
New Business: There was a question about painting in the church. The main high traffic areas have been painted, do we want a quote for painting Sunday school rooms and office? Chris knows someone we can get a bid from. We will check with Betty to make sure we don't miss anything.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 following a motion by Vicki and seconded by Laurie.
The next Council Meeting will be held Sunday, February 9th following the service.
Respectfully Submitted by: Stacey Biberdorf, Secretary
