F . C ’ C Dear Brothers and Sisters,

During this Season of Lent, we have been focusing on our theme “Lord I need You.” It has been a wonderful opportunity to turn to the Lord Jesus in our times of stress, anxiety, fear and sadness. We know that Jesus is with us and that He loves us, but to put our trust in Him is a completely different matter. This has been extremely challenging for us these past years with the release of the Grand Jury Report in August 2018. Our trust in the leadership of the Church has been severely damaged. In many cases, we have felt betrayed and disrespected. It has only been through God’s grace and our love of the Lord that we have endured. As the administrator of our parish grouping, I can only say how amazed and inspired I have been in witnessing the selflessness and generosity of our parishioners. So many of you have been so encouraging and supportive in spite of the sadness and embarrassment we have faced. I know that when I have called out to God “Lord I need you” that He has shown me the witness, love and faithfulness of the parishioners of our grouping.

One area that has truly amazed me of your goodness and generosity is your response to the Parish Share Program. Each of our three churches not only reached our Parish Share goals in 2019, but overwhelmingly exceeded those goals! This in spite of many being reluctant to give to diocesan programs. As a result of exceeding our goals, each church was able to deposit thousands of dollars to our savings. Holy Rosary deposited $41,337, Miraculous Medal deposited $12,461 and St. Patrick deposited $41,319 into each church’s savings account. This

money stays here in our parishes to support the continued efforts to promote the faith here in our communities. I am so humbled by your goodness and love for Jesus and our faith.

We are now beginning our Parish Share Campaign for 2020. There is some more good news! The assessment for each of our three churches has been reduced or has remained the same. Each parish is assessed 17.6% of its income to support various diocesan pastoral, social and educational activities. The Parish Share goal for St. Patrick has been reduced from $118,628 to $106,738. The Parish Share goal for Miraculous Medal has been reduced from $70,600 to $55,226 and the Parish Share goal for Holy Rosary has remained relatively the same with a slight increase from $31,025 to $32,444.

Last year we started having a Second Collection on the first and third Sundays of each month to support our Parish Share effort. Because so many of you split your parish donation on those Sundays between the two collections, we were then able to accomplish two goals – lowering our Parish Share assess-ment and paying off our Parish Share goal and depositing thousands of dollars into our parish savings accounts! As I mentioned earlier, everything collected over and above our Parish Share goal is deposited in our parish savings accounts.

I thank you so much for your amazing generosity and I ask your once again to be as generous as you can for this year’s Parish Share Program. Let us continue to call out to the Lord, may we continue to say “Lord, I need You!” Through His grace and His love, He is able to turn our sorrow into joy, our fear into trust and our doubt into sure faith! He is able to do great things! “Lord, I need You!”

In Christ’s love, Father Carmen

DIOCESE ANNOUNCES CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS

As hospitals and public health officials in Pennsylvania prepare for the potential spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, Bishop David Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is calling for precautions within the celebration of Mass in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This time of year is traditionally a peak season for the potential spread of influenza, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s most recent update lists statewide influenza activity as “widespread”, with confirmed cases in more than half the regions in the state. Children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune and/or respiratory systems are most at risk. “It’s important to point out that there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Pennsylvania. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the local health care agencies, are encouraging preparation and precaution as the situation continues to be monitored. A Diocesan Bishop is responsible for promoting, regulating, and being vigilant over the liturgical life in his diocese. As such, I am instituting precautions that will serve as preventative steps to help our faith community, and region as a whole, stay healthy. That is my primary focus, “ Bishop Zubik said. The Bishop issued the following directives:

The distribution of the Precious Blood during the Eucharist is temporarily suspended. Holy water fonts should be cleaned and drained on a weekly basis. The exchange of the Sign of Peace through physical contact (typically a handshake) is temporarily suspended. Those who feel ill are not obligated to attend Sunday Mass. In the interest of the health of your faith community, they should stay home until they are well.

The precautions will take effect immediately and continue as long as deemed necessary by the Bishop. “We will continue to monitor the situation and be ready to make updates as needed,” Bishop Zubik said. The Bishop is also advising people to be consistent with basic personal hygiene practices outlined in Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Preparedness Guidelines (health.pa.gov):

Cover coughs or sneezes with elbows instead of hands. Wash hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Clean surfaces frequently including countertops, light switches, cell phones, remotes, and other frequently

touched items. If you are sick, stay home until you are feeling better.

In addition to outlining the precautions within Masses celebrated in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Bishop Zubik offered this petition to be included during the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass: “For those who are suffering in the current outbreak of sickness, that they may be healed; for the health professionals taking care of those in need, and that our merciful and loving Father will strengthen our faith and trust in His goodness and divine providence, let us pray to the Lord.”

The Church encourages all Catholics to celebrate the Sacrament of

Reconciliation each Lent.

In addition to our normal confession times offered every week at all of our worship locations, each parish grouping in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will be offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday, April 1 at St. Patrick Church from 6:00-9:00 PM. Please take advantage of this opportunity to make a good Lenten confession.

Please also reach out to Catholics you know who have been away from the regular practice of our faith and invite them to seize this chance to begin again and receive this special outreach of mercy and grace.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Anticipation of the feast of

SAN OSCAR ROMERO

MARCH 22 at 1:00 PM (Spanish Mass)

We will have a special procession and music at the Spanish mass on Sunday, March 22 in honor of St. Oscar Romero. After mass, we will be graced by the presence of a Latino music ministry group from St. Martin of Tours parish in Gaithersburg, MD called: Jesus Te Ama. Please join us for praise and worship in Spanish after Mass.

San Oscar Romero, a bishop and martyr during the civil war of the 1970’s in El Salvador, was assassinated while in the midst of celebrating mass on March 24, 1980. Pope Francis said at his canonization: “His ministry was distinguished by his particular attention to the most poor and marginalized.” We look forward to you joining us in honoring God’s work of mercy accomplished through his humble servant.
