The California labor federaTion is dedicated to promoting and defending the

interests of working people and their families. With more than 1,200 affiliated local unions

representing 2.1 million union members, we are actively engaged in every aspect of

California’s economy and government. Together, we craft and support legislation that

protects working families, and we hold our legislators accountable. Together, we are

the California labor Movement.

about this Scorecard: This legislative scorecard reviews Labor’s legislative progress in 2011 and rates the performance of California legislators. You will find a balance sheet of Labor’s legislative wins and losses, the Governor’s record, a description of key bills the Federation and our affiliated unions lobbied for and against, and a scorecard for all Senate and Assembly members on each bill. All unions should review this scorecard as they consider candidates to support for elections.

a forCe for ProgreSS 2011

Our nation now has the greatest inequality in recorded history. Big business and the banks sit on record profits, while families struggle just to put food on the table. Companies aren’t hiring, banks aren’t lending, and the recession isn’t ending for us.

It is no coincidence that at a time of such great inequality, we have seen renewed attacks on the freedom to join a union and bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions. While workers filled the Wisconsin statehouse to protest the elimination of collective bargaining for teachers and state employees, California’s workers are mobilizing to defeat yet another attempt to silence our voice in the political process. Just when America needs unions most, we are under concerted attack from coast to coast.

Workers won’t be silenced. Who else will stand up to the corporations that want tax breaks to send our jobs off-shore? Or the banks that would rather take a family’s home than renegotiate their loan? Workers must have the right to speak in a collective voice or we’ll always be drowned out by the corpo-rate megaphone.

In California, the tide is turning. After seven years of a Schwarze negger Administration that turned its back on workers, we now have a Governor who believes in a fair economy, in funding our schools and our public safety, and

in restoring the California Dream. This year, California Labor made real prog-ress to revive our economy, protect our communities, and restore hope for the future.

Labor’s agenda is about the California we all believe in: better jobs, greater opportunity, and stronger communities – not just for union members, but for all Californians. That will be our common ground as we rebuild our economy and bring back our state’s promise. The men and women who built this state, and whose work makes it run, deserve no less.

In Unity,

For millions of California workers, the economy has been devastating. Lost jobs, lost homes and lost dreams.
