Hello! Thanks for picking up the inaugural issue of Loose Meat Sandwich, a creative quarterly of music, art, and writing. We are excited to share issue one with you. The creation of this zine was inspired by two occurrences: 1) Geoff’s compiling of a music mix for the tumblr International Tapes and 2) his discovery of My Own Mag, an experimental literature zine from the 1960s that featured the work of William S. Burroughs, amongst others. Geoff’s adventures in compilation creation encouraged him to find a new excuse to make another mix. Yet, simply putting together one streaming listicle wasn’t a compelling enough project, so the idea to make a tangible companion item, a zine, in this case, was born. The print & digital shall coexist, dammit! We reached out to some talented musicians and gathered a downloadable EP’s-worth of varied musical wonderment to accompany our print materials.

What’s in the zine, you ask? Reading about Burroughs & early ‘60s counter-culture small-press mimeographs inspired a writing frenzy, which you’ll learn about in these pages. The quest to find a new form of poetics for these current times lead to an exploration of the smartphone as a compositional device. The resulting words are funny, often scandalous, and always bizarre. To bridge the music and poetry we’ve added the visuals of an exquisite conceptual art series from Teflon Beast’s Keegan called “Hello Faces.” The face never lies!

As a companion to this publication we have compiled a 7-track EP, which can be downloaded on the Teflon Beast Bandcamp page. Detailed liner notes for the tracks complete the final pages of this zine. So please, feast your eyes on colorful faces and read the humorous rants of an iPhone madman. Download and listen to the mighty mix of noise-pop-rock at our Bandcamp page. We hope you will enjoy this issue and look for the summer zine in a few months.

Poetry generated using iPhone’s auto-correct on email. Random letters typed to bring up word selection. Words chosen quickly as much for sound as meaning in an improvisatory mood. Phrases carry impact without interference from the conscious mind of the writer, with next to no editing after the fact. A tech-savvy cut/paste method for today.

Mix-tapes, mix-discs, compilation LPs, and shoddily thrown together streaming playlists all make for fun, far-out listening. What we have done here is found a small treasure trove of experiments, demos, discards, and gems from artists who’ve either worked with Teflon Beast in the past or are new discoveries that we want to share with y’all. Our goal is to turn ya on to some new jams. Bon Appétit!

Arklight - The Conductors: Arklight is a NYC rock band consisting of two brothers and their childhood friends. The Conductors was recorded in their basement rehearsal space in Astoria, Queens. A bent pop song recorded in a single take, it features lyrics about the local subway line and a semi-improvised bridge with delay pedal guitar wrangling and keyboard bell tones. For more Arklight music, check out their full length album on Teflon Beast or find them online at: www.arklightband.tumblr.com

Chris Daily - Tell Me Why Do Fools Fall in Love: Daily is a musician, producer and family to all that is Teflon B. His contribution is a melding of two 60s-era songs, The Beatles’ Tell Me Why and Frankie Lymon & the Teeangers’ Why Do Fools Fall in Love. In a Nilsson-esque burst of magical-pop-mashup-majesty, Daily creates a wholly original tune. Perfect for springtime wooing and whistling, dig! http://chrisdaily.bandcamp.com

End of Men - Lumpy: An experimental electronic project conceived by Teflon Beast, EoM encompass the shadows and composes mad sound-pictures using keyboards as tools of aural aggression. It will come as no wonder that Lumpy is an homage to Frank Zappa, inspirational hero to the experimentally-minded.

Geoff - Sent From My iPhone 1: As simple as Geoff reading the words you see on the pages in front of you. Poetry in motion? Poetic devotion.

Mold Omen - Called Calmness: Baltimore’s duo of noisers, Mike Pursley & Andy Livingston, Mold Omen has been putting out enthusiastic washes of crrrrrrkkkk & bzzzzz & dink dink dink for the last few years and their contribution here is one of intense vibrations. https://soundcloud.com/mold-omen

Noiserock Treehouse - All Away: Formed in March of 2010 in Denton, TX, Noiserock Treehouse is a post-punk project featuring the compositions of Corbin Young, a Texas native and Austin migrant. The band has played numerous shows and is currently in it’s fourth lineup with James on bass and Pickles on drums. This year the band plans to record at least 16 tracks for a full length release. All Away is a short but sweet pop-punk tune stemming from the influence of bands like Wire and Boy Racer. http://noiserocktreehouse.bandcamp.com

Teflon Beast Project - Different Drum: At Teflon Beast, we’re constantly making new work and sometimes that work is set aside, never to be revisited again. One such project is a “lost” album by in-house band the Teflon Beast Project. In a mood for pure pop symphonics, Chris & Keegan produced a tribute to Linda Ronstadt with a cover of the classic Mike Nesmith-penned “Different Drum.” A sublime melody and a treat to listen to, TB’s production is not to be missed.
