Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses andpractice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or

any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped andreleases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are springloaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs aremade from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.

t’s hard to say whether it isironic or absolutely fitting that

Trevor Brazile became ProRodeo’sfirst $4-million cowboy May 14with his steer roping winnings atthe Butterfield Stage Days.Brazile’s steer roping earnings

represent the smallest portion ofhis $4,000,397 – less than aquarter – but it was in steer ropingthat he earned his first NationalFinals berth (1997) and where heearned his first gold buckle in anindividual event (2006).And then there is the matter of

the way Brazile is building up hisvery substantial lead in the 2011all-around world standings. His $46,548 in steer roping is

not only more than he has earnedin either tie-down roping($25,305) or team roping($32,255), it is more money thanhas been earned by the worldstandings leaders in steerwrestling, team roping (heading

or heeling), saddle bronc ridingand tie-down roping.“That really isn’t a surprise,”

Brazile said of how he reachedthe milestone, “since the bulk ofthe money I’ve won this yearhas come in steer roping. Asironic as it seems, I’d bet that Iwin more money per rodeo inthe steer roping than I do in anyother event. It’s just a greatevent for me.”Bridgeport was his fourth

major steer roping title of theseason, following the SanAntonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the SandHills Stock Show &Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, and lastweek’s Guymon (Okla.) PioneerDays Rodeo. Thanks, in no small measure,

to the prize money infusion inthe San Antonio steer ropingevent this year, Brazile seemswell on his way to shattering theyear-old record for single-season

earnings in the event. He alreadyholds the single-season earningsrecords for the all-around and forteam roping headers. The 14-time world champion

has career totals of $1,917,529 intie-down roping, $1,157,345 inteam roping and $925,523 insteer roping.“I never imagined winning $4

million,” Brazile said. “I wasrodeoing with Roy (Cooper)when he crossed $2 million, sothat was the number I dreamedabout for a lot of years. I justthink it’s cool that I can win thistype of money with a rope inmy hand.“The world championships are

great – don’t get me wrong – butthe money means a lot, becausethat’s how I support my family. Itmeans that I don’t have to go outand get a real job and just try torodeo as a hobby.”At Bridgeport, Brazile won

the first round of the steerroping in 10.0 seconds, finishedsecond to Vin Fisher Jr. in thesecond round (9.4 to Fisher’sbrilliant 8.8) and won the three-head average with a time of 33.7seconds. Brazile and partnerPatrick Smith finished third inthe team roping, and the $1,211each received in that eventallowed Brazile to claim the all-around title with total earningsof $5,652.His 2011 all-around total of

$104,108 puts him over the$100,000 mark for the 14thconsecutive season and increaseshis lead over second-place CodyOhl to more than $73,000.Brazile has surpassed $200,000 ineach of the last 10 years (2001-2010) and $300,000 in each ofthe last five.He was the youngest

contestant to reach the $2million milestone (July 2006) andthe first to reach $3 million(December 2008) before thislatest accomplishment.“I really don’t keep up with

the money milestones until I hearthat I’m close to reaching one,”

LOOPS MAGAZINE • 7

Brazile said. “But I definitelywant to stay on track and be thefirst guy to $5 million now.Hopefully, I can earn that nextmillion as quick or quicker thanthe last. That’s the great thing

about numbers like these. Notonly is it good for me, but it’sgood for the sport thatsomebody can win this type ofmoney – and it just keepsgetting better.” K

hen tying calves mostpeople get in a position

where they’re most comfortable. It’s not always the best position, but that’s where they’recomfortable. I’m constantlystriving to get better in all aspectsof my life. Whether it’s myroping, my spiritual walk orbeing a better husband andfather, I want to be the best Ican. That means taking risks andleaving my comfort zone.Complacency breeds mediocrityand that’s just not good enough.

My natural instinct is to be a

coach because I make a livingwinning. But now as my two-yearold wants to rope, play golf andbat baseballs, I’ve had cause toreflect on my own childhood andhow my dad coached me.

Admittedly I was probably themost hardheaded kid in Texas anddidn’t want to be told anything - Iwanted to do it myself. My dadsupported me and would turncalves out for days on end. Hemight, or might not, make asuggestion in a day’s time. Now, Ithink that was partially due to myhardheadedness, but also because

he knew the value of my learningto figure things out for myself.

As parents, we love ourchildren to distraction, want themto be the best they can be andenjoy the benefits that come withbeing the best. But even with thepurest intentions, we can rob ourkids of developing problemsolving skills and learning to thinkfor themselves by telling themwhat to do and think.

Over the years I’ve seen thisquite often at clinics and juniorrodeos but had never given itmuch thought until I became a

parent. As I play ball with Stone,I have to work hard to keep thecoach in me at bay. It’s not onlybecause he’s even harder headedthan I was; I don’t want to turnquality time with my son into acritiquing session that he won’tenjoy and ultimately wants toavoid. If he enjoys it now, he

will want to excel at it later.I’ve been a parent for less

than three years and don’tpretend to have all of theanswers. But I do know that it’sthe most important job I’ll everhave. It’s both hard andrewarding and as I raise my boysI’ll try hard to keep an open

mind so I can encourage them tobe individuals.

As parents it’s easy, evenunintentional, to sacrifice yourchild’s happiness for your owngoals. As for me, I’m pushingmyself to be the best dad I can beand sometimes that means notsaying a word. K

Deuteronomy 17:14 – 17

ne precaution that God gave to the nationof Israel after they left Egypt was for themnot to multiply their horses, or their wives,

or their gold and silver. One of the greatestchallenges that we have today in America is tounderstand that we are dependent upon God,our Creator, whether we realize it or not. Thehorses in the land of the kings were used forwar and for power. God’s message was not tomultiply something in excess that would givethem a false sense of security and power. Heknew that if their dependence on Him wasflawed, that the nation would be flawed.

God also gave them a commandment not tomarry wives from foreign countries that wouldbring foreign Gods into their family and theirnation. God knew that if they would marry anindividual that didn’t honor Him that they couldvery easily be influenced away from God.

In the area of gold and silver and excess, Ibelieve God’s message in the Old Testamentwas so they would never become dependentupon their gold and silver. Our possessions canbecome extremely deceptive when we place oursecurity, whether in this life or the life to come,in our possessions.

When issues of life come your way, as theydo with all of us, where do you look for

answers to life’s problems? Do you look atyour wealth? Do you look at your power? Ordo you look to others to solve your problems? Many political people have taken power andabused it. Many well-to-do people have takenmoney and abused it. Many simply look toman for answers that only God can provide. At the end of the day, when we all ultimatelystand before God, we will not have gold, silver, horses or relatives. We will stand beforeHim and give an account for what we’ve donewith the gift that He has given us.

Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye firstkingdom of God, and his righteousness; and allthese things shall be added unto you.”

When God is first in your life, then and onlythen will you be the man, the woman, thehusband, the wife, the daughter or the sonthat God created you to be. Stuff won’t getyou into heaven.

Tie down roping in Canada will remain“alive and well” due in part to the

launching of a new organization called “TieDown Canada” (TDC), which will endeavorto promote and support this exciting rodeoevent through a series of sanctioned eventsthroughout the province of Alberta andperhaps all of Canada in the near future!

Unlike the United States Calf RopersAssociation (USCRA) where ropers arecategorized in a numbered system, TieDown Canada ropings will operate witheveryone roping in one division based onage and roping ability, with the goal ofeveryone having an equal opportunity towin. Since the new organization is beinghoned around the non-pro ropers for thefirst year, most contestant times will bestraight up with a few equalizers. Theseinclude the following:

• 14 years and under - 1 second off per run• 65 years and over - 1 second off per run• 70 years or over - 2 seconds off per run• Past year amateur association winner -

1 second added per run• CPRA permit or Semi-Pro holder -

1 second added per run• Full CPRA member in the last 4 years but

dropped your pro card to go amateur -1 second added per run

Memberships, at a cost of $100 foryouth and seniors and $150 for everyoneelse, will be necessary in order to compete

in a sanctioned TDC event. The moneycollected from the memberships will beused for “added money” at each of the fiveropings as well as administration andadvertising of Tie Down Canada.

The largest roping is scheduled for July 7,2011 with added money of $10,000 and atrophy bronze sculpture. Also, throughoutthe series of ropings contestants will earnpoints in each go round (1st through 10th).The ropers with the most points at the endof the last roping will receive a trophysaddle and a cash bonus.

We are also working with the USCRA toenable the winner of each roping tocompete in their “Showdown Finals” inStephenville, Texas for the 2012 season.

Craig Fitzpatrick, the organizer of“Canada’s richest tie down roping” over the last ten years is the creator of the new concept.

“I’ve been thinking about the idea forquite awhile now and have talked to lots ofropers and event promoters to get theirinput in order to have a system that worksfor everyone. So I think we new have aformat that will work and ultimately, ifeveryone supports it, our sport will continueto flourish and grow.”

For more information, please go online atwww.tiedowncanda.com or just Google TieDown Canada. You can find much moreinformation and keep up to date on theseason’s schedule, results and standings, etc.

shadow was cast over thehorse industry at the end

of May. The outbreak of EHV-1(Equine herpesvirus-1) virus hadequine and rodeo events of allsizes cancelled. The outbreakwas believed to stem from theNational Cutting HorseAssociation’s event in Ogden,Utah held April 29-May 8. Fromthere, most of the Westernstates, as well as severalCanadian Provinces hadsuspected or positive cases. As ofpress time today, May 23, manyof these cases have held steadyand no new alarming facts areproving that the virus isspreading like many feared.

California17 reported cases with only onecoming in after the originaloutbreak.

TexasOne horse tested positive andone suspected case.

IdahoOne horse tested positive andwas euthanized after showingsevere neurological signsassociated with the disease.

New MexicoOne confirmed case with onehorse euthanized.

OregonTwo confirmed cases.

Utah Five horses tested positive.

WashingtonFive horses tested positive.

AlbertaThree horses tested positive.

British ColumbiaNo confirmed cases.

ColoradoNine confirmed cases with twohorses euthanized.

ArizonaOne confirmed case.

Montana, Nebraska,Nevada, North Dakota,South Dakota, &Wyoming Remain free of positive EHV-1 reports.

Since, at the present time, there seem to be no newconfirmed cases, I believe it was agreat call by many producers, with the help of veterinarians, across the country to cancelevents. When this issue hits yourmailbox we hope this will be oldnews and events everywhere willbe back up and going. We won’tknow which way this outbreakcould have gone if these stepswere not taken. I believe it couldhave been devastating for the

equine market. Imagine thisvirus hitting a large roping, rodeo, barrel race or horse showwith hundreds of horses incompetition. The weekendevent-goers could have carriedthe virus back to their citieswhere even more horses couldhave been contaminated.

Thanks to the high speed oftoday’s world, with socialnetworking sites helping spreadthe word, as well as the hardwork of veterinarians all acrossthe country who took commandof the situation and made theirrecommendations. Based on thiscollaborative effort this virus waskept under control. K
