Page 2: Loop Monthly Newsletter: August 2015

At Second Baptist, we believe that growing spiritually is not something we do alone or just individually. We do it with others. We are a community of people who take our faith and our discipleship seriously. We want to help bring the reign of God to earth.

One of the ways you can know what opportunities are available is through the LOOP. We publish this each week and a broader, more expanded version each month. We also have an Equipping Ministry to help individuals know their gifts and interests and connect them to ministries that are a potential match. At any time, any of our pastoral staff welcome the opportunity to visit with you and help you find ways to serve. Keep the LOOP around to remind you of important dates and activities. Please keep our senior pastor Jason Edwards and his family in your prayers as he has been on sabbatical leave this summer. He will return mid-August. Blessings,Connie McNeill Associate Pastor for Discipleship & Equipping

What Do I Believe?Sundays starting Aug. 16 | 9:30 a.m. | Social Room-West SideKnowing what we believe seems like it should be an easy, black-and-white process. However, we all eventually realize that it is far more nuanced and complicated than we originally thought. This class, led by Tyler Tankersley, will seek to wrestle with ten big questions in Christian faith. The goal of this class will not be to offer the answer to these questions, but instead to present multiple perspectives using scripture, tradition, and reason. We will explore together what we believe as we explore these ideas. Aug. 16: What is the Bible?Aug. 23: Is God in control?Aug. 30: Does God know everything?Sept. 6: How should we read Genesis 1-2?Sept. 13: What does the cross mean for us?Sept. 20: Who will be saved?Sept. 27: What does “communion” mean?Oct. 4: What does “baptism” mean?Oct. 11: What happens at the end of times?Oct. 18: What is hell?

Sacred Rhythms StudySundays starting Aug. 30 | 9:30 a.m. | Social Room-West sideDavid Fulk will lead this study of Sacred Rhythms: Arranging Our Lives for Spiritual Transformation by Ruth Haley Barton. This study takes us more deeply into understanding seven key spiritual disciplines along with practical ideas for weaving them into everyday life. Spiritual disciplines open us to God’s transforming love and the changes that only God can bring about in our lives. Barton is a writer, spiritual director and pastoral staff member.

Come join us if you haven’t found a place to be part of Sunday morning yet. Small group Bible studies and spiritual formation groups are important to our being disciples of Jesus.

Thank you, Karri George! For the past four years, the coordinator for our extended session program has been Karri George. This position is one of those “behind the scenes” jobs that nobody knows about, but if it’s not carried out well, the whole church knows! Every Sunday, Karri has worked to make sure that our little ones from birth through pre-K are taken care of during the 11:00 worship hour. Her family has joined her, and many times we have seen John and the girls helping out in a room that wasn’t filled.

It’s time to pass on the baton, and I want to personally thank Karri for her sweet spirit and gracious attitude as she has called and emailed and had our preschoolers in her best interest. When you see her in the halls, hug her neck and thank her for a job well done!

The baton is being handed over to Becky Starnes and we are so thankful for her willingness to lead this ministry in the days ahead! Becky is employed with Liberty School District as a counselor and has been a member of Second since 1995.

For information on serving as part of Extended Session, please visit page 10.

serveLove to Cook? Meal Teams Forming For Fall Wednesday Night MealsMeals and Activities Start Aug. 26We are looking for two teams of 5-7 people to be responsible for preparing one meal a month (four meals in the fall and four in the spring) for our Wednesday night Second Servings meals. If you would like to be a part of a team, we would be happy to help you find a place. The teams are responsible for setup, serving the meal, and some clean up afterwards. This year we will have a clean up team to assist each week.

Contact Mike Lassiter at [email protected] or Maggie Henderson at [email protected].

Make a Great First Impression as Part of the Hospitality TeamSign up by Aug. 9Are you a warm, welcoming, outgoing person? Do you have a gift for meeting new people and making them feel at ease? If so, 2BC has a role just for you! Join the expanding Welcome Center Greeter Team. This group of individuals will help those guests visiting 2BC feel like they have found their church home. What a great help you can be!

If interested, please contact Maggie Henderson at [email protected] to sign up by Aug. 9. Contact Greg Mees at [email protected] if you have questions.

Serve During Extended SessionExtended session is the time when loving childcare providers care for our youngest 2BC members during the 11:00 a.m. service. Ideally, extended session is a service that youth and adults can sign up for two or three times a year. If every parent of a preschooler will take his/her turn, we can make that possible!

If you currently use the SignUpGenius.com website that sets up our volunteers, just go to that site and find 2 or 3 times when you are able to stay in the preschool during the worship service. If you are not already on the website, contact Becky Starnes at [email protected] to let her know of your willingness to volunteer. For more information about extended session, contact Gwen Phillips at [email protected].

Annual rebuilding together clay county work day | Saturday, Oct. 4 Second Baptist will again join with other churches, organizations and businesses to do our part for Rebuilding Together Clay County. We will work on two apartment buildings belonging to Hillcrest Ministries and do drywall repair, rot repair and painting and some dirt spreading.

All skill levels and abilities are welcome for this local one-day mission project, and we are also in need of several extension ladders to help with the painting.

If you can help, contact Mark Davis at 816-682-5471. Volunteers will meet at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church (1600 N. 291 Hwy.) at 7:30 a.m., then disperse to the job sites.

Your Catalyst Send Initiative In Action — Donate Items for Trip to RomaniaBring items to the basket in the Welcome Center by Aug. 23Four members of 2BC — Martha Reppert, Harold Phillips and Lyndell and Roxann Brenton — will travel to Bucharest, Romania, on Aug. 28. Martha and Roxann will help Roma women learn the process and art of quilting. The focus will be on small projects (table runners, pot holders, tote bags, hot pads, etc.) that can be sold to supplement the Roma women’s household incomes, as poverty and unemployment is rampant. Harold and Lyndell will help get the community school ready for the upcoming academic year.

Many of the supplies needed to complete the quilting projects are unavailable there or are cost-prohibitive. Please consider donating the following items, all available in the sewing/quilting aisle at our local Wal-Mart. Most can also be found at JoAnn's Fabrics and/or Hobby Lobby. Monetary donations may also be made. If you have questions, contact Roxann at [email protected], on her home phone 816-781-4430 (home), 816-786-0862 (cell).
