GREATEXCLUSIVE
SPECIALOFFER!
The exhibition at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum charts the history of Irish Dance from the late
1800s to present day, through costume, embroidery, images and film. From the itinerant dance masters
of the 1800s to today’s ‘masters of dance’ there is a rich and colourful story to be told. The exhibition
is arranged in eight sections and tells the story of Irish Dance in almost 100 objects, ranging in date
from a medieval brooch, to a contemporary diamante embroidered costume for solo competition.
The exhibition includes reference to the 1904 Feis in the Glens of Antrim, a landmark event in Ulster’s
recent cultural history, with competition in music, drama, craft work and dance. Embroidered costumes,
medals and certificates will tell the story of the development of both dance schools and governing
bodies for Irish Dance. The exhibition will display, for the first time, a selection from the museum’s
collection of costume for the Patricia Mulholland Ballet. Patricia Mulholland was one of Ireland’s most
talented choreographers, performers and teachers of Irish Dance, for almost 50 years from the late
1940s. The global phenomenon that was, and is, Riverdance will be interpreted in the gallery through
dance costumes and film footage of the breath-taking 1994 Eurovision interval performance. nmni.com

A County Down artist is holding a special exhibition at the John
Hewitt Bar in Belfast in aid of local charity Cancer Fund for Children.
Since retiring from his role as Principal of Ballymagee Primary School
four years ago, Edward Ferguson has been devoting more time to art.
As a member of Seacourt, the Centre for Contemporary Printmaking,
based in the Balloo Industrial Estate, Edward has been able to
develop new skills and explore modern printmaking processes. The
result can be seen as ‘Serendipity’ runs from Monday 2nd February to
Saturday 28th at the John Hewitt Bar, 51 Donegall Street, Belfast. The
proceeds of the sale of Edward’s limited edition prints will be donated

The brain child of County Down husband and wife
team Ron and Jennifer Kenna, Belfast-based pedal
bike tour company Wee Toast Tours has officially
launched its unique tour offering, enabling visitors to
Belfast and locals see the thriving city on this unique
attraction, never before seen in the UK or Ireland. It
has taken in excess of 2 years and an investment
of £30,000 just to develop and get the bike on the
streets of Belfast, but the company already has future
plans for expansion including additional bikes on Belfast’s streets and across Ireland in the next two years.
In addition to an on-board barrel and tap, Wee Toast Tours’ massive 860kg 15-person pedal bike, uniquely
built in and imported from The Netherlands, features stationary seats for each passenger as well as a set
of foot pedals for each member of the party to contribute to the bike’s motion. The bike is steered by Ron,
the designated driver, who also has control of the hydraulic brake. weetoasttours.com

HOLYWOOD EDITION #2/FEBRUARY 2015 YOUR LOCAL PHARMACIST
Burns Pharmacy in Holywood is encouraging people to ‘come to their pharmacy first’ for advice and treatment for common winter ailments.
COME TO PHARMACY FIRST
We have all witnessed
(either first hand
or through the media) the
significant pressures that have
been experienced over recent
weeks and months within
Hospital Services in Northern
Ireland. This is therefore a
perfect time to remind and
encourage people to ‘come
to pharmacy first’ for advice
and treatment for common
ailments. The Urgent and
Emergency Care Review (2013)
highlighted that 20 percent
of GP consultations relate
to common ailments which
could largely be dealt with by
self care and by support from
community pharmacies.
A lot of patients do not
realise that when suffering
from certain common minor
ailments, they can access
free advice and treatment at
many pharmacies, including
Burns Pharmacy here in
Holywood. Not only do
patients benefit from easy
access to expert advice and
treatment without the need
for an appointment, it also
helps to ease the pressure
on GP practices and A&E
Departments. When you visit
your community pharmacy,
the pharmacist will discreetly
ask you a range of questions
about your symptoms, other
medicines you take and any
illnesses you have etc. This
will help the pharmacist to
make a recommendation for
your treatment and where
appropriate the pharmacist
will also be able write a
prescription for you for certain
common minor ailments.
As pharmacists, we are also
trained to know when to refer
on to another healthcare
professional, such as your GP,
so you should feel confident to
make community pharmacy
(and I hope Burns Pharmacy
in Holywood) your first port of
call for common ailments.

Did you know that for
over 20 years there have
been after school and kids
clubs at Queens Leisure
Complex running every
single week? If you are a
parent and have children in
primary school, you may be
very interested to hear what
Community Programme
Worker Pauline Millar and
her great support team
have to offer.
Every Monday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday
there are after school and
kids clubs held in the venue
and the activities on offer
know no bounds. As an
example there is arts and
crafts, table tennis, snooker,
puppet shows, 3D projects,
cooking, games and above
all interaction with kids of
a similar, younger or older
age which has proved
invaluable for confidence
and team work. Tied in with
the activities are seasonal
projects such as Valentines,
Chinese new year, St
Patricks, Christmas, pancake
Tuesday and so on along
with safety lessons too.
The cost for all clubs is
just £1 per child. Mondays
After School Club focuses
on art which runs from
3.30-5.30 for p1-p7. The
Girls Group is on Monday
nights from 7-9pm p7-form

of the group for 19 years
now and has proved to
be a huge inspiration to
the children. She and her
team (who are also former
former kids club attendees)
Hannah, Jack, Sinead and
Tina have each and every
day planned out and the
kids get plenty of exercise
too with activities in the
sports hall available. Some
trips out and about take
place throughout the year.
The buzz about the place

children clearly see this as
an important part of their

One of the strengths of
the U3A movement is
that it is the members who
decide the approach or focus
of any individual group. The
first output of the Holywood
District local history team
was a photographic
exhibition displayed in the
Holywood Library entitled
Holywood – Who and
When? The exhibition drew
on a fascinating range of
photographs held in the
Archives of the Holywood
Library, some of them going
back nearly 100 years. The
photographs were grouped
under four themes – sports,
schools, youth organisations
and personalities. The public
were invited to help fill in the
gaps – and there were many
lively discussions around
the exhibition, as childhood
memories and recollections
were prompted.
This has encouraged
members of the U3A group
to embark on a longer
term project drawing on
the reminiscences of old
Holywood residents, called
The Way We Were - Holywood
People Remember. An
initial list of over 50 friends
and neighbours has been
drawn up, each of whom
is being invited to share
their recollections with
a member of the U3A.
Already a fascinating range
HOLYWOOD EDITION #2/FEBRUARY 2015 HISTORY IN THE MAKING
/// Set up just over a year ago, Holywood District U3A now has more than a hundred enthusiastic members. About a dozen different pursuits are now undertaken by the membership, including creative writing, philosophy, art, gardening, walk-ing, bowls and local history. Here, Robin Masefield, Convenor of/for the Local History Group looks at the local history group in particular.
U3A Has Come To Holywood
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE
THIRD AGE
of information has come to
light, whether about one of
the leading local families in
the area (the Kennedys) or
those who were involved in
the daily removal of night soil
from Palace Barracks during
the Second World War. It
is likely that a book based
on Holywood residents’
recollections will result.
Another project in train is
a further exhibition, using
both material in the Library
Archives and information
identified through the
reminiscence project, about
Holywood people and the
First World War.
In addition, the group
holds monthly meetings in
Holywood Library, often with
an outside speaker. Visits to
historic sites, both near and
far, have also been arranged.
Chair of U3A is Joy Montgomery. Membership is open to anyone who is retired or not in full-time employment. It costs just £20 per year. (You do not even have to live in Holywood.) Further information is available on the Holywood U3A website (u3asites.org.uk/code/u3asite.php?site=638&page=1) or about
the local history group from the convenor at [email protected].

FEBRUARY: There are many events held and celebrated dur-ing February. The Super Bowl, LGBT History Month, World Marriage Day and of course Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day was traditionally celebrated in the UK by giving confectionary and cards. However as time has moved on traditions have changed and we now expect Bouquets of Flowers, Sumptu-ous Candle Lit Dinners and of course Champagne, the wine of love. So this month we’re going to talk about the virtues of the marvelous Champagne Deutz. The Morrell family and Cham-pagne Deutz go back to the 1970s when Deutz was Morrell’s
private label Champagne. Now owned by Champagne Louis Roederer, this cham-pagne is better than ever! On the nose, the first impressions are mellow and reminiscent of acacia flowers, confectionery, reinette apples and brioche. The voluminous wine has a silky, velvety structure which displays a harmonious balance between the freshness of the chardonnay, the fruity structure of the pinot noir and vinosity of petit meunier. This is very cred-ible and serious Champagne for those with a discerning palate and exceptionally good taste. Available at Grange Wine Merchants from only £35.99

Kick off those winter
blues and rally the
family for Cancer Fund for
Children’s Winter Woolly
WalK. The event this February
is a fantastic family day out
and a great way to raise
funds for the charity which
provides practical, emotional
and financial support to local
families affected by cancer.
UTV Live presenter Paul
Reilly was on-hand to help
the charity launch the event
along with his little niece Cali
and nephew Caleb.
“I have already signed up to
the event and I am urging
others to do the same! It will
be so much fun and a great
way for parents to keep the
kids entertained while also
raising money for a great
cause,” the Newtownards
man said. Cancer Fund for
Children fundraiser and mum
to two young boys, Naomi
Braithwaite, from east Belfast,
explained that this year, the
charity is hoping to raise
£25k by holding the walk at
seven special locations across
the province.
“We are hoping that 500
families will take part and
will be able to raise about
£50 each to help us reach our
total. £25k could provide a
free therapeutic short break
at Daisy Lodge for 72 families
or 625 one-to-one support
sessions with a Cancer Fund
for Children Specialist on
the hospital wards of the
Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick
Children,” she said.
“I will be taking my family
along to the event because
it is just a great day out for
us parents and the kids. The
first 500 people to register
will receive a free pair of
Winter Woolly Walk gloves.
Each walk will take place
on February 28 and they
will range from three to
five miles. There will also be
plenty of warm refreshments
to heat cold hands and fun
family activities on the day,”
Naomi added.
Locations include The Lagan
Towpath in Belfast, Tollymore
Forest Park in Newcastle,
Lurgan Park, Antrim Castle
Gardens, St Columb’s Park in
Derry/L’Derry, Castle Coole in
Fermanagh and Drum Manor
Forest Park in Cookstown.
Registration is from 10am with walks starting at 10.30am except Tollymore which will start at 10am. For more info and to register log onto cancerfundforchildren.com/event/winter-

test track failed to deter
the bravest of the brave
as they battled for a place
in the Red Bull Crashed
Ice – Ice Cross Downhill
World Championships
2015, coming to Northern
Ireland this month. Dozens
of awesome athletes from
around the country took
part in the Belfast National
Qualifier at the Odyssey

this month.
Each contender was tasked
with proving their skills by
completing two qualifier
runs of the test track, which
included negotiating
0.5m high jumps, a 0.5m
underpass and bollards, in
the fastest time possible.
Red Bull Crashed Ice is an
extreme ice cross downhill
event in which full contact
four-man teams skate along
a 440 metre track of steep
turns and vertical drops in
a timed battle involving
speeds of up to 60 km/h.
On February 20th and 21st,
over 140 athletes, including
Bangor lads Darren Snel,
Nathan Mount and Scot
Bickerstaff, will compete on
a heart-pumping specially
designed assault course
positioned in front of
Parliament Buildings before
a global television audience
and up to 40,000 local
spectators over the two
day event.
Tickets for Red Bull Crashed

LOCAL SHOP WINS RETAILER OF THE YEAR!/// HEALTH FOOD STORE SCOOPS TOP AWARDIona Shop, Holywood’s inde-pendent health food store has won the Your Healthy Living magazine retailer of the year award for Northern Ireland.Natural Lifestyle and sponsors A Vogel invited customers from all over the UK to vote for their fa-vourite local health food store via post, online or in the store itself. Stores were then narrowed down to a shortlist per region with a regional winner being chosen by the judging panel.Judges deemed Iona a well deserved winner of the Northern Ireland region for many reasons, including their extensive range of stock (“an Aladdin’s cave of wonderful things”), the quality of their knowledge and advice, and
the very obvious connection they have to their local community.Remarkably this recognition comes as the owner Heidi Steffen celebrates 30 years in business in the town in 2015.Heidi says: “I am really pleased to have won this award as it represents recognition from our loyal customers. We aim to provide the best advice to help our customers make informed choices about their health and lifestyle. It is nice to know that they value what we do.” Heidi wins a 4 day trip to her native Switzerland courtesy of sponsors A Vogel herbal remedies. Why not pay Iona a visit and see for yourself exactly why they won this coveted award.

AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across NorthDown, including Holywood, has cost theHousing Executive almost £90,000 in thepast two years alone, it has emerged thisweek.
The housing body has had to spend thefive figure sum on removing graffiti fromits property in the various estates it isresponsible for across the borough.
While much of the graffiti can be putdown to common vandalism, some of it hasalso contained sinister threats againstnamed individuals and to express supportfor or opposition to various paramilitarygroups.
Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA hasexpressed his ‘shock’ at the mounting costof the graffiti, which emerged in responseto a question he put to Department ofSocial Development Minister, MervynStorey, at Stormont.
It was revealed that during the financialyear 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent£43,267.15 on graffiti removal around theborough and during the year 2013 to 2014this rose to £45,080.23.
Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’to discover that the Executive had spentover £88,000 on removing graffiti from itsproperties across North Down over the lasttwo financial years.
He added, “At a time when departmentsare struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needsto be doing is having to waste moneyremoving graffiti put there by sillyindividuals who are costing the ratepayersof North Down a lot of money.
“This is money that could be spent in abetter way, such as providing homes orindeed doing essential repairs toinfrastructure.
“Those responsible for graffiti need towise up and stop this as they are hurtingthe ratepayers of North Down.
“I believe the only way to reduceincidents of graffiti is to impose tougherfines and community service on thosecaught and make them remove theirhandiwork.”
Mr Easton’s Assembly question askedthe Minister for Social Development todetail the cost of removing graffiti fromHousing Executive properties in NorthDown in each of the last two financialyears.
The minister replied that the HousingExecutive had advised him that the cost ofremoving graffiti from their properties inNorth Down was as follows - 2012/13,£43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23.
In May intimidating loyalist graffiti wasdaubed on a gable wall in Bangor’sClanmorris estate just days after a man wasviolently assaulted by a masked gangwielding hammers in the Abbey Park area.
The terrifying threat included the words,‘Next time it’s a bullet,’ and was claimed tohave been made by a group called‘Loyalists Against Drugs’ whose name wasalso daubed alongside the grim warning.
The graffiti appeared after a man wasattacked by a gang of masked men as hewalked along a nearby road and had to betaken to hospital to be treated for hisinjuries.

AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across North
Down, including Holywood, has cost the
Housing Executive almost £90,000 in the
past two years alone, it has emerged this
week. The housing body has had to spend the
five figure sum on removing graffiti from
its property in the various estates it is
responsible for across the borough.
While much of the graffiti can be put
down to common vandalism, some of it has
also contained sinister threats against
named individuals and to express support
for or opposition to various paramilitary
groups.Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA has
expressed his ‘shock’ at the mounting cost
of the graffiti, which emerged in response
to a question he put to Department of
Social Development Minister, Mervyn
Storey, at Stormont. It was revealed that during the financial
year 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent
£43,267.15 on graffiti removal around the
borough and during the year 2013 to 2014
this rose to £45,080.23.Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’
to discover that the Executive had spent
over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its
properties across North Down over the last
two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments
are struggling to find money with cutbacks,
the last thing the Housing Executive needs
to be doing is having to waste money
removing graffiti put there by silly
individuals who are costing the ratepayers
of North Down a lot of money.
“This is money that could be spent in a
better way, such as providing homes or
indeed doing essential repairs to
infrastructure. “Those responsible for graffiti need to
wise up and stop this as they are hurting
the ratepayers of North Down. “I believe the only way to reduce
incidents of graffiti is to impose tougher
fines and community service on those
caught and make them remove their
handiwork.”Mr Easton’s Assembly question asked
the Minister for Social Development to
detail the cost of removing graffiti from
Housing Executive properties in North
Down in each of the last two financial
years. The minister replied that the Housing
Executive had advised him that the cost of
removing graffiti from their properties in
North Down was as follows - 2012/13,
£43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23.
In May intimidating loyalist graffiti was
daubed on a gable wall in Bangor’s
Clanmorris estate just days after a man was
violently assaulted by a masked gang
wielding hammers in the Abbey Park area.
The terrifying threat included the words,
‘Next time it’s a bullet,’ and was claimed to
have been made by a group called
‘Loyalists Against Drugs’ whose name was
also daubed alongside the grim warning.
The graffiti appeared after a man was
attacked by a gang of masked men as he
walked along a nearby road and had to be
taken to hospital to be treated for his
injuries.

FEBRUARY 2015 11HOLYWOOD ADVERTISER

AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across North
Down, including Holywood, has cost the
Housing Executive almost £90,000 in the
past two years alone, it has emerged this
week. The housing body has had to spend the
five figure sum on removing graffiti from
its property in the various estates it is
responsible for across the borough.
While much of the graffiti can be put
down to common vandalism, some of it has
also contained sinister threats against
named individuals and to express support
for or opposition to various paramilitary
groups.Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA has
expressed his ‘shock’ at the mounting cost
of the graffiti, which emerged in response
to a question he put to Department of
Social Development Minister, Mervyn
Storey, at Stormont. It was revealed that during the financial
year 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent
£43,267.15 on graffiti removal around the
borough and during the year 2013 to 2014
this rose to £45,080.23.Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’
to discover that the Executive had spent
over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its
properties across North Down over the last
two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments
are struggling to find money with cutbacks,
the last thing the Housing Executive needs
to be doing is having to waste money
removing graffiti put there by silly
individuals who are costing the ratepayers
of North Down a lot of money.
“This is money that could be spent in a
better way, such as providing homes or
indeed doing essential repairs to
infrastructure. “Those responsible for graffiti need to
wise up and stop this as they are hurting
the ratepayers of North Down. “I believe the only way to reduce
incidents of graffiti is to impose tougher
fines and community service on those
caught and make them remove their
handiwork.”Mr Easton’s Assembly question asked
the Minister for Social Development to
detail the cost of removing graffiti from
Housing Executive properties in North
Down in each of the last two financial
years. The minister replied that the Housing
Executive had advised him that the cost of
removing graffiti from their properties in
North Down was as follows - 2012/13,
£43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23.

For many parents, selecting
the right childcare for their
child is one of the biggest
decisions they’ll ever make.
NICMA – the Childminding
Association offer support
and advice, helping to match
parents with childminders
who have suitable vacancies.
The first step is to decide
what type of childcare
best suits your needs.
Childminding offers quality,
affordable, flexible childcare
in a ‘home from home’
setting. If you opt for a
childminder, make sure they
are registered with their
local Health and Social Care
Trust. All childminders must
complete and regularly
update training in Health &
Safety, Safeguarding Children
and Paediatric First. They
must also be insured, vetted,
and inspected.
NICMA provides a telephone
and website search facility to
help you to find a registered
childminder. It is worth
taking time to visit a number
of childminders and do
some research. To help with
this, NICMA’s “Choosing a
Childminder” booklet offers
a comprehensive guide to
what you can expect from
your childminder. You can be
assured that any childminder
who offers good quality care
will understand why you
want to ask questions.
For more information on finding and choosing a childminder, call NICMA on 028 9181 1015 or visit the NICMA website at www.nicma.org . Alternatively you can contact your local
Childminding Development Officer, Fiona Clendinning on 07837734825 [email protected]

snacks are healthy.
Ask about the daily
routine, activities

Once you’ve selected
