On Wednesday night I couldn’t s leep

The third game we played Darnum and we should’ve

won because the scorers put Darnum up two goals (4

points) and didn’t count one of my goals (2 points) . The

scores were 18 -16 but the real scores were14 -18 but

they put it l ike that and we lost so we had to have a

snack! Then we played around and before the last round

I hurt my thumb again and then I had to wait for my

mum to p ick me up. I watched the game then after a

few minutes my thumb felt better. It was a great day at

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust and

Surprise. We have been making many links to

the movie ‘Inside Out’ which focuses on these

emotions. We have begun writing pieces that

focus on each emotion in our ‘My Emotions

Book’. Tuesdays session focused on Sadness.

We spoke about other words that mean the

same things as sad (synonyms) and shared

experiences with each other. On Friday we

are moving onto the emotion of Joy. Students

have really engaged with identifying each

emotion and making links to it.

Emotive Writing

This term for Whole School

Writing our focus is on emotive

writing. We are focusing on the

six universal emotions which are:

CHAPLAINS’ CHAT Have you ever heard of self sabotage? It may be called by other names like “shooting yourself in the foot”, “putting your foot in your mouth” or “cutting off your nose to spite your face”. We’ve all done it at some time. Psychologist use the term ‘self sabotage’ when ‘ we seem to be getting in our own way’ and hindering our own success. It reveals itself in various ways including procrastination, unfulfilled dreams, worrying over things that shouldn’t matter, using aggression and not willing to stop, and feeling unworthy so letting people walk all over you. For children that would look like: staying up late the night before a test; cleaning their room when they would be doing homework; visiting a friend to study togeth-er but spending the time playing video games; forgetting to bring the necessary books home,; clowning around in class. There are four steps that are recommended to help (yourself or) your child stop ‘self sabotaging’.

Recognise and acknowledge that the behaviour exists. Help them to see that you care and want to help them.

Begin by monitoring (recording) their negative thinking – possible using a journal or some other means to log whenever they think bad of themselves or find then using negative self talk as well as making note the time of day.

Challenge both the behaviour and the thinking by providing substitutes that they can consciously employ. Write the substitute terms (or symbols) on paper and put it in view (fridge, behind the toilet door, bedroom wall at foot of the bed..) as a reminder. Affirm responses as they succeed.

Create some self supporting behaviours to help rebuild self confidence. Share the revised thinking with your partner, grandparent or teacher so they can help along the way.

Please remember that some of these things have grown and developed over many months and may take some time and effort to change them – but be assured progress can be made if you remain consistent. So, when was the last time ‘you shot yourself in the foot’ – daily? If it’s a frequent event for you and your child is shap-ing up the same way then have a chat to a counsellor or go through the same process for your self. Learn heaps – its all good knowledge to have for the future as you children progress through life. Anne Prime
