Do you remember your first days at Queens College, coming up the hill toward Jefferson Hall and looking forward to what would lie ahead? What courses would you take? Where would that learning lead you? Every year students make the same journey to campus, looking forward to new classes and new opportunities. Right now there are so many great things happening at Queens College. For example, QC student teams won first and second place in the first-ever statewide “Making College Possible Coding Challenge,” beating out 68 other teams drawn from all the CUNY and SUNY colleges. Queens College was also recently recognized as a top producer of Fulbright Scholars, a Military Friendly campus, and one of the top 1% of schools nationwide for advancing students’ social mobility. Indeed, we can all be proud of our Queens College. Welcome to QC Legacy 4 Ways You Can Help Queens College 1. QC student veterans, military personnel, and their dependents gained a new home on campus when Queens College unveiled its newly renovated Veterans’ Lounge. The renovations—which included equipping the space with new furniture, computers, a fully stocked refrigerator, coffee machine, and textbook repository—was made possible by a $9,000 Vet Center Initiative Grant from the Home Depot Foundation.

Dennis Torres, Veterans Support Specialist for QC’s Veterans Support Services, spearheaded the renovations. Mr. Torres is a two-time Iraq combat veteran with eight years of service with the Selective Marine Corps Reserve. Having earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees while in the corps, he understands the challenges faced by student veterans.

Dr. Raymond Erickson is a professor emeritus of music at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Since joining the music faculty in 1971, Dr. Erickson has left his mark. Whether as

a professor, the founding Director of the Aaron Copland School of Music, organizer of the first endowed music scholarships, or Dean of Arts and Humanities, he has supported Queens College in every way that he can.

I’d like to share with you why I decided to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity to benefit the Music Library at Queens College.

Why a Charitable Gift Annuity?First, I wanted to complete the gift during my lifetime and work with Queens Col-lege to ensure the gift could be directed as I wished. Second, I received a gift tax deduction that I could apply to my current income tax filings. Finally, the gift

If you are 701/2 or older, you can reduce the amount of highly taxed funds in your IRA account by directly transferring funds from your IRA to the Queens College Foundation. Gifts of up to $100,000 will not incur any income tax or count as a part of your income (please note that you will not receive an additional charitable tax deduction) and will count toward your Required Minimum Distribution.

BENEFITS OF CHARITABLE IRA DISTRIBUTIONS:

■ The gift is not subject to federal or state income tax.

■ The gift will count toward your Required Minimum Distribution.

■ The gift will not count as a part of your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income).

With a Charitable Gift Annuity, you will receive a check or direct deposit payment for the rest of your life that will never decrease in size or frequency.

When you create a Queens College charitable gift annuity, you receive these benefits:

■ reliable fixed payments for you or a loved one

■ favorable annuity rates

■ significant tax savings

■ an opportunity to influence the future of Queens College

Please note: You must be 65 or over to receive immediate payments. Queens College Cheer Squad, 1939

is generating new income for my wife and me for the rest of our lives. Right now we are using the annuity payments toward our grandchildren’s college costs. One philanthropic gesture is generating another, which is very satisfying.

Why the Music Library? When I first arrived at Queens College, the Chair Howard Brofsky (later one of the founders of the QC jazz program) took me into the library and said, “This is the greatest thing about this place.” It was a true research library, the sort of asset you could use to attract the most serious music scholars.

I have spent a lot of time in that library, and thanks to one alumni gift (from one of my Yale professors, in fact), the collection is returning to its former glory after lean budgetary years. I want to ensure that this will continue in perpetuity, which is why my gift is intended as an endowment.

Here’s how a CGA works:

1. You make a gift with cash or securities of $10,000 or more, which is invested into an annuity account that generates interest. The rate is based on your (and/or another individual’s) age at the time of the transfer.

2. You claim an immediate charitable tax deduction (in most cases).

3. You receive quarterly payments in the mail or direct deposit to your account for the rest of your life.

Upon your passing, Queens College will receive the balance of your gift, to be used as you direct.

Queens College is special. When I came to Queens from Yale, I was flabbergasted by the quality of the Music Department. At Queens the faculty not only have brains, they have talent. That made a huge impression on me because so many senior colleagues represented what I myself aspired to be.
