Looking for the right partner for your NTP tutoring?

Amazing!

Just brilliant!

Seriously impressiveMaths:

Everyone Can!

Welcome to White Rose Maths!

Dear Reader,Thank you for your interest in making a difference with White Rose Maths. If you’re not already familiar with our work, here’s a brief summary of what we’re all about.

Who we areWhite Rose Maths arose from the passion of a trio of committed maths teaching experts at Trinity Academy Halifax, eager to show that every child can love and master maths. Now part of the successful Trinity Multi Academy Trust, White Rose Maths (WRM) comprises an ever-growing team of specialist teachers, tutors and support staff. We provide high quality (and often free) resources and training - a comprehensive Teaching for Mastery solution that is transforming the teaching and learning of maths. In England, our free, mastery-based primary schemes of learning are used by more than 80% of primary schools and our more recent KS3 and KS4 schemes are used in 30% of the country’s secondary schools. In total, we work with over 30,000 schools in 140 countries worldwide.

WRM has been busier than ever during the Covid-19 school closures and restrictions. We rapidly developed a range of high quality video tutorials and lesson materials for home learning and offered individual support for parents to help them teach their children effectively. We also ran webinars for teachers, practitioners and parents. In fact, there have been 26 million resource downloads since we launched the WRM Home Learning and our resources were among the highest-rated by parents.

The White Rose Maths family: always moving forwardWe’re delighted to have been chosen by the National Tutoring Programme for a second year running to help disadvantaged children across England. This project aims to make up for learning time lost due to the Covid-19 closures with high quality, subsidised tutoring to meet each pupil’s needs. We trust that our brochure will give you all the information you need on this exciting and much-needed initiative, and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,Caroline Hamilton, Managing Director

The National Tutoring Programme The attainment gap between pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers is well documented, and the impact of the Covid-19 school closures has inevitably deepened this divide. However, robust research evidence shows that one-to-one or small-group tutoring can significantly reduce this gap: the Teaching and Learning Toolkit suggests that this kind of tutoring can deliver a boost of up to +5 months’ progress.Designed and developed by a group of charities in partnership with the Department for Education, the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) is a new initiative for schools across England, offering subsidised tutoring support to help disadvantaged pupils make up for teaching time lost during the school closures. Following rigorous assessment and review procedures, the NTP has selected a number of organisations to deliver the tutoring support - and at White Rose Maths, we’re honoured to be selected as a NTP Tuition Partner.

Our role as a NTP Tuition PartnerWRM’s remit is to provide high quality tutoring (both face-to-face and online) for at least 2,500 pupils across England. We have an exceptional tutor team with talented individuals who meet our high expectations. Every tutor takes part in an intensive training programme with our team of maths specialists before we deploy them to their tutoring roles. This training programme continues throughout the academic year.

At White Rose, we always aspire to do and be the very best and as you would expect, our work as a NTP Tuition Partner will reflect this universal commitment.

Our amazing WRM tutors

We begin with the best people…Our tutors are predominantly experienced teachers or highly successful graduates in mathematics (and/or related disciplines) who undergo extensive training on our Tutor Programme. White Rose Maths have some of the highest quality tutors of any programme and we invest in their development via weekly CPD and coaching. Our tutors are all experienced in delivering the White Rose Maths tutoring programme and are passionate about providing all pupils with the highest quality tuition. The range of different backgrounds and experience in our tutor team means that we have expertise in all key stages.

…and help them become even better! While many of our tutors have undertaken a great deal of training in the past, all WRM tutors complete an intensive 2-week induction programme. As part of this they focus on the 5 key principles surrounding Teaching for Mastery to ensure that their pedagogical knowledge is of the highest standard. We also focus on different teaching strategies so that our tutors have a bank of practical techniques which can be used to boost engagement and enjoyment and maximise learning in all tutor sessions whether delivered online or face-to-face. As well as this, we plan in opportunities throughout the year for further training as we recognise the importance of continual professional development and the impact that this has upon pupils’ learning. You’ll find that a common thread linking every WRM tutor is a passion for inspiring their tutees to enjoy and progress in maths, giving them new confidence as well as skills.

It goes without saying that every one of our tutors is fully DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding.

I really enjoy tutoring for WRM. Their resources are really well designed and engaging, which not only builds pupils’ confidence and love for maths, but also supports and compliments their in-class learning. For me, the most rewarding aspect of the job is seeing pupils of all ages eager and excited about their next lesson with me.Ehjaz Gull, WRM Tutor

What does a typical tutoring session look like?

While sessions will of course vary depending on the individual pupils, content, delivery mode and so on, the diagram below shows the pathway through a typical WRM tutoring session.

8

01Starter Task

Easing into the session by recapping on existing knowledge, this task might comprise content

from an earlier session, or perhaps some recall

questions.

04Independent

Task Pupils work on a task

independently while the tutor prompts and supports

throughout.

06 Assessment

The tutor checks learning using diagnostic or exam style

questions appropriate to a pupil’s key stage level.

02Introduction

Pupils tackle a diagnostic question or discuss a problem.

05 Feedback

The tutor works through the pupils’ answers, giving feedback on any key misconceptions or

mistakes revealed.

03Examples

Using an ‘I do, we do, you do’ model, the tutor models clear examples of how the problem

could be solved.

How will tutoring be delivered? Our tutors will deliver either online or face-to-face. For now at least, we are unable to offer a blended approach involving both delivery modes.

How do you ensure high quality tuition? Our tutors are carefully selected in a demanding recruitment process. We then provide extensive training delivered by experienced members of our team. In addition we maintain our high standards through regular quality assurance, monitoring, feedback from and regular communications with schools and an ongoing programme of support and training for tutors.

What are your safeguarding procedures? First of all, we request enhanced DBS checks for all our tutors, and we train each one of them in safeguarding. All online tuition is recorded for safeguarding purposes and we comply with individual school safeguarding policies whether we deliver in school or remotely.

The National Tutoring Programme has also appointed a dedicated Safeguarding Lead.

All our work complies with GDPR and data protection law.

How much communication can we expect from White Rose Maths? We know teachers and schools are busy, so we do all we can to communicate with you as helpfully, effectively and efficiently as possible.

We aim to ensure that all contact between you and our team will comprise clear and effective conversations that give you the feedback you need and the greatest possible value from the programme.

How should we identify which pupils need the tutoring? The NTP is aimed at helping disadvantaged and Pupil Premium learners who have been most affected by the school closures. Your own professional judgement will help you decide which pupils most need — and will best benefit from — this initiative. You’ll also need to consider the available space and technological implications for the pupils you select.

Since a school would need to share certain pupil data with the tutoring programme, what happens if parents refuse consent for this? Pupils can still access tuition even if parents or carers opt to withhold information.

Will tuition sessions take place before, during or after school? Are these arrangements flexible? We always aim to meet your school’s own needs. The more flexible you can be, the more we can maximise tuition impact.

What do I need for face-to-face tutoring sessions? Our tutors will bring everything that the pupils need for the sessions, you will just need to provide the room. In order to maximise the impact of the tutoring a quite learning space is preferable.

How does the online platform support my pupils? We use Tutexa to deliver our online sessions. This platform is fully interactive and allows each child the freedom to work independently with personalised tutor support.

How should I select the pupils for tuition? Schools are best placed to decide which pupils need provision the most but we would encourage schools to focus on pupil premium pupils in light of the evidence of the impact of lost learning for disadvantaged pupils. There is an expectation that for Tuition Partners, 65% of provision delivered in schools will be to pupil premium pupils, this will be monitored across the programme.
