Summer is almost over! Can you believe it? While it’s been a summer like no other, many are no doubt disappointed there will be no Harvest Fest next week to cap it off. We often use our own archives, as well as the ar- chives of the previous Clippings publishers to get an idea of what is probably happening in the week. As many know if you host an event and it’s suc- cessful it often, but not always becomes an annual event. Here are few summer events we’ve decided to look back from the last week of August. On Sunday, August 26th 2018, the first St. Joseph Island Poker Run was this past Sunday, with over 20 teams participating in the boat run that started off in Richards Landing and made several stops along the way, concluding at Hilton Beach marina later in the afternoon. Summer is almost over! Can you believe it? While it’s been a summer like no other, many are no doubt disappointed there will be no Harvest Fest next week to cap it off.

We often use our own archives, as well as the ar-chives of the previous Clippings publishers to get an idea of what is probably happening in the week. As many know if you host an event and it’s suc-cessful it often, but not always becomes an annual event.

Here are few summer events we’ve decided to look back from the last week of August.

On Sunday, August 26th 2018, the first St. Joseph Island Poker Run was this past Sunday, with over 20 teams participating in the boat run that started off in Richards Landing and made several stops along the way, concluding at Hilton Beach marina

later in the afternoon. Lots of prizes were given away with proceeds going to The Children’s Li-brary.

Going back another year in 2017, Science North’s traveling Planetarium made a visit to the Old Town Hall in Richards Landing this past Thursday. Well over 100 people visited the planetarium while it was in town. With the closest permanent plane-tarium over 3 hours away in Sudbury, so this was a good time to experience the stunning 360 degree visuals without a long road trip.

Long before our time here, the last week of Au-gust in 2013 there was an event called The Island Gathering festival of cultural alliances had every-thing going for it, promising lots of fun for every one with a wide range of events and activities in four locations over two days. Even the weather was on board, giving us a warm summer Saturday, perfect for the Gathering’s big kick-off at the Fort St. Joseph site. However according to the article in issue #910 less than 100 people showed up, when organizers were expecting 1500.

Going back even further to 2009, Saturday’s gloomy and overcast sky couldn’t deter over 300 people from attending the 75th Anniversary Plowing Match, and its ‘neighbour’, the St. Joseph Island Horticultural Society’s Flower and Vege-table Exhibition. With both events taking place side by side at the St. Joseph Township Centen-nial Grounds and Fire hall respectively, visitors were able to enjoy the best of both worlds .... with delicious food and drink available in between.Unfortunately this year’s plowing match was just officially cancelled, which is not surprising.

When the pandemic first hit we thought we’d take a look back at some of the old issues. Many people like to reminisce, and many including ourselves were not around then and had no idea these events happened. While things have certainly improved since everything shutdown, we probably will ex-amine some more “old news” in the future.

Plowing match in 2009 (sorry for the quality)

Woman Reported Missing After Leaving Island Cottage

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance to locate 74-year-old Sally Gib-son.

She was last seen on August 6, 2020. It is believed she was trav-elling west from Sault Ste. Marie to Winnipeg, Manitoba in a brown 2010 Toyota Corolla, The license plate number is BVHZ 260. She is described as being 5’8 tall with wavy, collar length brown hair, hazel eyes and she wears glasses.

Anyone with information regarding her where-abouts is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Geoff MacLeod at (705) 949-6300 ext. 288.

Someone concerned for Sally brought this to our attention. Reading other stories about her being missing, it appears she left her cottage on August 14th and never arrived at the family reunion she was planning to attend on August 16th. She was reported missing on August 18th

We will of course update our readers if and when more information becomes available. Sally runs Windroses Gallery and has a studio at her cottage.

Roasted Chicken and Butternut Squash Soup

6 bone-in, skin on chicken thighs1 medium-large butternut squash (peeled, seeded and cut into one inch cubes)1 large white onion (diced in medium size pieces)2 tablespoons canola oil or olive oilsalt, pepper and garlic powder4 cups chicken broth1/4 teaspoon cumin!/4 teaspoon coriander1 teaspoon lemon juicefew sprigs fresh parsley or cilantro

Place chicken, cubed squash and onions on a large rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle oil over top and toss all together to coat with the oil. Arrange chicken thighs with squash and onions around them. Dust with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Bake at 385*F for 35-45 minutes or until the chicken is done and the squash and onions are tender. Transfer chicken to a plate and let cool. Place the squash and onions in a large pot, mash half with a potato masher. Add the chicken stock, cumin and coriander. Bring to a sim-mer and cook for 10 minutes. Remove skin and bones from chicken and cut remaining meat into small piec-es. Add lemon juice and chicken to the soup. Season to taste with salt, pepper and garlic powder and cook 10 minutes more. To serve, top bowls of soup with a few sprigs of parsley or cilantro.

**If you would like a thicker and heartier soup you can also add 1 cup white kidney beans before the last 10 minutes of cooking.
