Fairer Tales – Princesses doing it for themselves by Emma DoddHSBC UK has teamed up with Hogs Back Books and award-winning author and illustrator Emma Dodd to produce Fairer Tales – Princesses doing it for themselves – a modern-day twist on three classic fairy tales, featuring financially empowered heroines, who are clever, feisty and fun. The book is being produced as part of HSBC UK’s ‘Balanced Books’ campaign, which aims to

address negative gender stereotyping within popular culture, and is available free to download from the bank’s website.

Zoo on the Moon, written and illustrated by David Walker, has been selected for the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge. This is the second year running that a Hogs Back Books title has been selected, and we are delighted that our titles have been chosen by librarians to represent the “best in con-temporary picture books and poetry”. Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the theme of this year’s Challenge is Space Chase, and it will launch in Scot-land on June 22, and in England and Wales on July 13.

Aunt GrizeldaNew Titles and BlogAunt Grizelda, the fictitious, black-humoured poet created by Anna Best, has launched her own blog. The blog, which can be found on the Hog’s Back Books (HBB) website, will feature extracts and rhymes from her forthcoming titles, published by HBB, as well as other snippets of interest to those fascinated by all things grisly and gothic.

Early Readers and Young Adult FictionHogs Back Books will be venturing into two new genres in 2019. In May, we launch our first early reader series, which follows the lives and adventures of the creatures who live at Pug’s Hole, not least of whom is the Granimal. No one knows what he is or where he came from – having hatched out of a mysterious pink egg – but he quickly becomes a friend, eager to learn from his fun-loving neighbours. In December, we will launch our first young adult series, featuring Inky Stevens, an eccentric and reclusive school detective. The Case of the Caretakers Keys is the first in a trilogy set in Blinkton Comprehensive, built around the ruins of an old monastery in a dreary coastal backwater, during the 1970s. It skilfully combines the “school story”, “detective” and “gothic” genres.

UnexpectedAunt Grizelda’s Fairy Tales of the Unexpected is the second book in our new humorous and irreverent series, written by Anna Best. This title is a compendium of traditional fairy stories told in fabulous rhyme, but given a modern and cheeky twist.

This title follows the success of Aunt Grizelda’s Treasury of Grim and Grisly Rhymes (978-1-907432-28-6), which was selected as part of the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge.

The third title in the series is Aunt Grizelda’s Guide to Malevolent Monsters, which will be published early next year with further titles to follow.

    The Princess and the Frog

Many years ago now,In a country far away,

There lived a little Princess,Who was pretty, kind and gay.

It happened that one evening,As she sat beneath a tree,

A small green frog leapt from the lake,And landed on her knee.

It smiled at her politely,And gave a little croak,

Then to her great amazement,In mellow tones, it spoke:

“Good evening, fair young Princess,Pray, how are you today?I hope I didn’t startle youBy leaping out that way.”

“Oh, not at all,” she answered,Although she felt quite weak.“But certainly I was surprised

    When you began to speak.”

Nora, Dora and Flora are three silly chickens who constantly bicker over which of them is the most beautiful.

Fed up with their squabbles, the other chickens suggest they ask the Farmer. But surely he’ll put them in his pot for supper!

Concerned for their welfare, the Wise Old Goat grants them three wishes. Will they use them wisely? Not these

    silly birds.

Why not sniff out some of our other great titles?

Karen Hodgson doesn’t care too much for show-offs, but does love a story with an explosive ending. Poor old Boris doesn’t stand a chance! This is Karen’s seventh title published by Hogs Back Books and her most breathtaking yet.

Steve Cox loves frogs and toads and has produced merchandising for many well known television characters, as well as having books published in different languages all over the world.

In a flash, Squiz jumped up the bars of the gate and, with a flick of his bushy tail, flipped the latch so that the gate, with Big Dog stuck in it, swung open.

Scrambling backwards, Big Dog freed himself from the gate and ran through the opening created by his small friend. Together, they pushed the gate closed just in time to feel the angry bull’s breath snorting through his nose.

“Too late!” hissed the bull.“Lucky escape!” said Big Dog.
