    Seam Welders

    Longitudinal

Longitudinal seam welding is a process used toproduce linear welds on a wide variety of parts. Formany industrial applications it is necessary to formthe material into a desired shape, e.g. a cylinderor rectangular tube, and then weld the edges toform a rigid structure.

The traditional method of doing this is to manually

hold the edges in alignment, tack weld them andthen complete the linear weld. This is done manuallyor by use of a simple carriage carrying the weldingtorch. This type of procedure is costly and timeconsuming for the following reasons:

Holding the edges accurately in alignment isdifficult for the full length of the part.

Tack welding takes time and leads to defectsin the area of the tack weld.

There is little effective chilling of the weld jointarea leading to distortion and oxidation of theweld and surrounding area.

Maintaining the dimensional accuracy of the

    part is difficult.

Jetline longitudinal seam welders provide a solutionto these problems. They optimize the welding pro-cess, reduce welding costs and improve the qualityof the weld. They are designed for the straight linewelding of all weldable materials in thicknesses vary-ing from 0.005" (0.1 mm) to 3/8" (10 mm). Thickermaterials can be accommodated using Jetline'sunique mandrel adjustment capability.

All Jetline seam welders use "chill-shunt" toolingwhich absorbs and dissipates heat through the useof additional mass operating under pressure againstthe work piece in the weld zone.

The longitudinal seam welder clamps the materi-als to be welded firmly in alignment giving uniformchill to the weld. It also provides the facility to

move the welding equipment accurately alongthe weld seam. This produces a butt weld freeof melt-through, burnbacks, extreme shrinkage ordistortion.

Jetline longitudinal seam welders feature the ulti-mate in ease-of-operation and accuracy. Modern, simplified controls reduce operator fatigue. Theshallow clamping structure design increases visibilityand efficiency.

Jetline manufactures a standard range of seamwelders for part lengths up to 240" (6 m). Longerlengths are available on special order. The rangeincludes the following models:

Internal seam welders are designedfor applications where the diameterof the parts to be welded is large. They do not employ a conventionalmandrel. Instead, they are fitted witha sturdy base structure on which theinsert holder and back-up insert aremounted. The advantage of thisdesign is that there is virtually no limitto the diameter of cylinder that canbe accommodated. The only limita-tions are the size and facilities of thebuilding in which the seam welder is

situated. Internal seam welders are manufacturedto the same exacting specifications as the externalrange and have the following features:

For all weldable materialsFor all arc welding processesFor 0.020 to 3/8" (0.5 to 10 mm) thicknessRack and Pinion carriage driveTravel accuracy is +0.015" (0.1 mm) per 10 ft (3 m)

A number of optional items are available to en-hance the capability of the system for your ap-plication. Please consult Jetline for further detailson these features.

The elevating style seam welderis essentially a variation of thecombination model. Instead ofa fixed height riser, the tabletopand mandrel on the elevatingmodels are mounted on support

columns on which they can bemoved up or down. Movementis through the use of a hydrauliccylinder with special fail-safevalves to ensure that the unitremains firmly in position, even inthe event of a power failure.

The tabletop design can be based uponthe external seam welder version (ModelLWH) where all the welding is done with thepart below the tabletop. Or the tabletopcan be an internal style (Model LWHC) toallow parts to be loaded under or over thetabletop. The internal style provides the

    maximum range of part diameters.

Elevating style seam welders can be fitted withany type of welding equipment for any arc weld-ing process. Due to the elevated working height, they are often supplied with remote control facilitiesincluding video monitoring and operator controlstations.

For details of capacities and sizes, consult the speci-fications for the combination seam welder.

The model illustrated is shown complete with bothGTAW/GMAW welding equipment. It has a weldlength of 120" (3 m) and can be elevated to acceptcylinders up to 96" (2.4 m) in diameter.

The system is fitted with a "droop-style' mandrelwhich can be hydraulically lowered to ease theloading and unloading of cylinders. Jetline canprovide loading carts as required.

Bench style seam welders are designed with a bracket to permit them to bemounted to a work bench or table. They are suitable for the GTAW (TIG) and Plasma(PAW) welding of materials from 0.020" to 3/16" (0.5 to 5 mm) thick. Actuation ofthe pneumatically powered clamping fingers is operated by foot-controlled airvalves.

The unit illustrated is complete with an optional self-standing base. Toe-touchswitches (as used on our other models) are available at extra cost. All benchseam welders use Jetline's unique 9627 microprocessor travel control which caninterface with suitable power supplies and with a pneumatic torch lift to providecomplete sequence control of the weld process.

    STANDARD PERFORMANCE FEATURES

    Travel Carriage and Control

The combination of powered round-way travel carriages and side beamsprovide the high degree of accuracydemanded in today's precision weld-ing. All carriages feature a largemounting surface which will accom-modate all types of welding equip-ment. Each carriage is mounted onself-aligning, triple roller bearings heldin "V"-shaped mounting blocks.

The carriage is driven by a DC servo-motor with a rack and pinion drive tothe track. Control of travel speed isprovided by the 9627 microprocessorcontrol which provides a standardspeed holding accuracy of +1% of therated speed.

    Hold-down Fingers

Opposing rows of aluminum fingersclamp the edges to be welded se-curely against the mandrel's back-upbar insert. Precision, reversible coppertips are screwed to the ends of thefingers and can be easily replaced ifdamaged or worn. The fingers "float"to compensate for any unevenness inthe workpiece.

    Retractable Edge Aligning Device

Each seam welder has two alignmentgages. Each gage has a blade thatcan be swung down to the centerline ofthe back-up insert to assist the operatorin aligning the sheet to the centerlineof the seam welder.

    Clamping Control

Toe touch pressure at any point alongthe length of the toe touch pad mount-ed on the seam welder support legsinstantly clamps or releases the clamp-ing fingers. This allows total flexibilityin joint gap closing. The finger designpermits the second side of the joint tobe "pushed-in" as clamping takes placeto provide a tight butt joint.

    Back-Up Mandrel

The mandrel is designed to supportthe part being welded and to restrain

the clamping forces. It has a grooveto accommodate interchangeableback-up inserts. The mandrel is usuallyof circular section but can be madeto accept any shape of part, e.g. forcorner welding or for the welding ofsquare and rectangular sections.

Water cooling or preheating of themandrel can be accomplished usingoptional facilities.

    Back-Up Bar Inserts

The insert is designed to slide into thegroove on the mandrel which main-tains the alignment of the insert. Inserts

are quickly and easily exchanged. Most inserts are made of copper tocarry away the heat generated dur-ing welding. The upper surface of theinsert is grooved, the size and shape ofthe groove is designed specifically forthe range of material and thicknessesto be welded. Additional inserts areavailable to cover a wide range ofmaterials.

Inserts are available with or without gasback-up facilities. Where back-up gasis required, the insert includes a gaschamber and holes that feed the gasto the backing groove.

    Pressure Hold-down

Clamping pressure is adjustable up to5,000 lb/ft (2270 kg/300 mm).

    Safety Switch

The safety switch is activated when themandrel latch is closed. It protects themandrel by preventing clamping whenthe latch is disengaged. Continuous Hold-down Strips

All precision seam welders featurethese strips which are optionally avail-able on standard models. They aredesigned for the welding of materialsunder 0.020" (0.5 mm) thick and for thewelding of refractory materials. Theyminimize the effect of air aspirationbetween the segmented fingers andcreate an uninterrupted "chill-shunt"effect along the entire length of theweld.

    Mandrel Tooling Adjustment

All Jetline seam welders incorporate a2" (50 mm) back-up tooling adjustment. This is effected by lifting or lowering thewhole mandrel and provides the abil-ity to accommodate thicker back-upinserts or to adjust for the welding ofdifferent parts.
