THANK YOU to the hundreds of households who have responded with a pledge to

the 2019 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, either during Mass or by mail or online! Your support helps bring the spiritual and corporal works of mercy to life throughout North and Central Georgia.

Remember that funds donated to the Annual Appeal beyond our parish goal are returned to IHM free of any assessment to allow us to continue meeting our pasto-ral and capital needs here in the parish.

If you have not yet had an opportunity to make your pledge to the 2019 Appeal, please be generous in your response. For more information, or to donate online, go to appeal.archatl.com.

OUR LENT PENANCE SERVICE was last week. But Monsignor Al and Father

Carlos are assisting at the penance services of many neighboring parishes this Lent, and you are welcome to join them at one of these. See the cover for this week’s services. Note: There will be no confessions during Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS originated in medieval Europe when wars

prevented Christian pilgrims from visiting the Holy Land. During Lent, the Sta-tions of the Cross allow us, too, to become pilgrims to the places and moments of sacred memory. The Stations are observed on the Fridays of Lent, through April 12, at 6:30 p.m. in English and at 7:30 p.m. in Spanish.

FISH FRIES are offered by the IHM Men’s Group on each of the Fridays of

Lent, through April 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the school cafeteria. Come keep your Lenten abstinence from meat in the company of your parish family!

EVENING PRAYER is celebrated on the Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00 p.m.,

through April 10. Consisting of psalms, readings, songs, silence, incense and prayer, Evening Prayer is both an offering of praise to the Father and a prayer of intercession for the needs of the world. Join us!

A LENTEN YOUNG ADULT RETREAT March 29-31 Calling all young adults! You are invited to a special 2-night silent retreat on March 29-31 at Ignatius House in Atlanta. Lent invites us into a greater intimacy with the God who ten-derly loves us. On this Lenten silent retreat, hear God’s invi-tation to you: know your belovedness, grow in friendship with Jesus and learn how to live as a prayerful person in the world. Please visit www.ignatiushouse.org for more details.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE Through April 14 We need your help to fill up the hours of our peaceful, legal prayer vigil across from Feminist Women's Health Center at 1924 Cliff Valley Way during the upcoming “40 Days for Life,” March 6-April 14. Our goal is to bring the light, love, mercy & hope of Christ to a place where it is so needed, and to stand for the value of all human life, the true dignity of women and the hope that God truly provides for all our needs. To sign up for an hour, or to join us in prayer from home, visit www.40daysforlife.com/Atlanta or contact Mar-garita Szechenyi at [email protected] or 678-200-9712.

DIVINE PLAYTIME—SPRING BREAK CAMP April 1-5 You’re invited to join our first afternoon camp for children 3-6 years old. Our theme is “Creation” and we will talk about all the hard work God put in to making our world so wonder-ful! Children will participate in crafts, stories, songs, nature walks, free play and more! For more information and to sign up, visit the parish website.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENTS! Don’t forget to make and fulfill a pledge to the 2019 AAA! According to the Archdiocesan Parish Verification Form, an “active” Catholic family: (1) is registered in their parish; (2) participates regularly at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days; (3) has a parish Time & Talent commitment on file for the current year and participates in at least one parish ministry; (4) has a parish Treasure commitment on file for the current year and contributes on a regular basis; and (5) fulfills a pledge to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal for the current year. Those who do not meet these criteria are not eligible for “active Catholic” tuition. Please do the right thing now so that your pastor is able to check “active” when your verifica-tion form crosses his desk.

Q What are the Scrutinies and exorcisms in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and what is their purpose?

A The Scrutinies, celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth

Sundays of Lent, invite the Elect, along with the assembly, into prayerful contemplation and repentance. The Scrutinies help “uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good.” The rituals help purify the heart and mind. They protect the Elect from the power of sin, strengthen them against temptations, and orient them toward the saving waters of Baptism (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, 141). Each Scrutiny concludes with a prayer of exorcism over the Elect, through which they “are freed from the effects of sin” and the influence of evil (RCIA, 144). Unlike exorcisms depicted in popular films, these are beautiful prayers that speak of Christ’s saving power over sin and death.

For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

COMING UP IN ADULT FAITH FORMATION Documents of The Second Vatican Council March 10-April 7 IHM School Library, 10:15-11:15 a.m. The teachings of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), are often argued about, but more seldom are they read and reflected upon. This Lent, we will examine some of the key documents of the Council. This Sunday, our subject will be the source of some of the most visible changes in the post-conciliar church, namely, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. All are welcome.

I CAN GIVE HIM MY HEART by Amy O’Connell

When I look at Jesus on the Cross, at first I see all the pain. I realize that I’m looking upon immense agony. I realize that I’m looking upon someone who died for the sins of man.

When I look closer I see his wounds. I see the nails go through each of his hands, and his feet. I see him mocked by the crown of thorns. I see he’s been scourged. I see where the soldiers pierced his side. His wounds make me feel sad. They make me feel undeserving of his gift. They make me want to run to Christ and ask him to help me a better daugh-ter of God.

I can give him my heart; he has opened his.

When I look closer, I see his piercing in his side. The sol-diers, with this wound, successfully pierced his heart so I

know what I’m seeing is a clear path to the literal heart of my literal Savior. I see openness. I see God unveiled. I see a heart aching to reach mine. I see arms stretched out as though to embrace.

I can give him my heart; he has opened his.

In this moment, I want to draw closer to Jesus. I want to share with him my own heart. I want to bear the wounds of vulnerability. I want to outstretch my withered hand. I want to be healed. I want to see his loving gaze. I bear the hope of joyful expectance that he will fulfill these desires.

I look at him, and he looks at me. And I realize I am safe, because he has triumphed over everything. I can give him my heart; he has opened his.

When I look at Jesus on the cross, I see a call to closeness. I see my friend. When I look at Jesus on the Cross, I know that I can give him my heart; he has opened his.
