What is Wood Badge? 21st Century Wood Badge is Scouting's premier training course. Baden-Powell designed the first Wood Badge course so that Scouters could use the skills and methods of Scouting in as practical a way as possible. Wood Badge is, first and foremost, learning by doing. Participants of the course are formed first into a Pack, bridge over into a Troop, and are finally inducted into a Venturing Crew—just as Scouts move up through the Scouting program.

Wood Badge is much more than just learning about the mechanics of the Scouting program. It is the embodiment of the Scouting spirit. Like many intense training experiences, Wood Badge has always relied on a busy schedule that forces the participants to work together, to organize, and to develop enthusiasm and a team spirit to accomplish the tasks and challenges placed before them. Carried out in the context of Scouting ideals and service to youth, the course develops deep dedication, spirit of brotherhood and fellowship in most participants. Certainly were it not for the common goals of the movement and its program for young people, it would be hard to get grown men and women to be excited about the 16-hour days required by a program that runs from early morning to late at night. After completing the course, however, most participants describe Wood Badge as "a mountaintop experience." Who May Attend? This course is open to all adult Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout and Venturing leaders, and District and Council volunteers capable of handling the hectic, physically demanding course schedule. Course Fee The fee for attending the course is $160.00. This includes all meals and course materials. Are You Ready? There are two ways to register. The first is to complete the attached application and return it to the Council Office with a minimum $30.00 non-refundable partial payment. The second is to go to www.InteliScout.com, complete the registration form, and use a credit card to make payment. (Full payment or $30 down payment must accompany either method of registration for your application to be valid.) The first 42 fully paid participants will be confirmed for the course. (Partial payment only gets your name on the list.) Register now to reserve your place. WE MUST HAVE 30 FULLY PAID PARTICIPANTS BY MARCH 1 FOR THE COURSE TO BE HELD. REMEMBER: The course is limited to the first 42 participants who are FULLY PAID ($160.00).

PLEASE NOTE: In the event of cancellation, refunds of your payments, less the $30, will be given until March 1, 2004. Up to a $100.00 refund will be given between March 4th and the 1st Course weekend. $50.00 is refundable to those canceling between the 1st weekend and the start of the 2nd weekend. No refunds will be issued after the start of the 2nd course weekend.

HISTORY OF WOOD BADGE

In 1911, four years after Scouting began in Great Britain, Lord Baden-Powell began training Scouters through a series of lectures. This led to the first Wood Badge training course for Scoutmasters held eight years later at Gilwell Park near London. In 1936, an experimental Wood Badge course was conducted in the United States. Then in 1948, the first American Wood Badge course was introduced in the United States as advanced training for trainers of Boy Scout leaders. Later, the program was extended to include troop committee members, commissioners, and Explorer leaders. Experiments began in the late 1960s with a leadership development Wood Badge course emphasizing eleven leadership skills. This program was launched in 1972. In 1978, an evaluation of Boy Scout Leader Wood Badge revealed a need for greater emphasis on the practical aspects of good troop operation. The new 21st Century Wood Badge course expands upon this by providing a blend of Scoutcraft skills, practical unit operation techniques and a variety of leadership exercises. The Longhorn Council is a leader in the nation for both quality and frequency of Wood Badge courses conducted. Since 1956, we have conducted 87 courses with over 2600 participants trained.

PURPOSE

21st Century Wood Badge is the advanced training program for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout and Venturing adult leaders. It is designed to offer leaders in the Scouting program the latest techniques of leadership, teamwork, and developmental models while applying them in the Pack, Troop, Team and Crew settings. Its purpose is to aid leaders in providing a quality program that will enable youth to grow to their highest potential.

CURRICULUM

21st Century Wood Badge is conducted over two, three-day weekend sessions held several weeks apart, with one or two patrol meetings between sessions. The 21st Century Wood Badge program consists of two parts: practical training and application. The practical leadership experience is conducted in both outdoor and seminar settings. At the conclusion of the practical training each participant has a maximum of eighteen months to complete the application phase within their scouting position and meet all of his/her personal goals that are established during the practical phase of the course. 21st Century Wood Badge involves participants in the application of skills within situations likely to be found in a typical Pack, Troop, Team or Crew setting. The training is applied in a variety of activities as well as in an in-depth exploration of the role of the adult leader in developing youth through the Scouting program.

QUALIFICATIONS To attend 21st Century Wood Badge, Scouters must: 1. Be registered members of the Boy Scouts of

America. 2. Have not previously completed a Wood Badge

course. 3. Have completed the basic training courses for their

Scouting positions.1 4. Have completed the outdoor skills training programs

appropriate for their Scouting positions.2 5. Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor

environment. 6. Successfully pass the BSA class 3 physical

GOALS 21st Century Wood Badge participants learn and put their training to use to improve the quality of the program within the unit they serve. A part of the practical training is the development of a “ticket.” This “ticket” is a written agreement to apply the knowledge gained during the course in specific ways by fulfilling a commitment of continued service to the Scouting program. The Ticket is structured in accordance with the latest thinking on effective goal setting and includes a Vision, Mission, and Steps to Success, or goals.

RECOGNITION

Upon successful completion of the “ticket,” the participant is entitled to receive the Wood Badge recognition. This consists of a certificate, the Wood Badge beads, a tan neckerchief with a swatch of MacLaren tartan, and a leather woggle or neckerchief slide.
