with eight new records
Authors: Bulganin Mitra, Priyanka Das, Udipta Chakraborti , Kaushik Mallick, Amitava Majumder
Abstract
81 species under 53 genera of 28 tribes under 3 subfamilies of the family Cerambycidae are
reported from the state of Meghalaya. Among which eight species, namely, Tetraglenes insignis
Newman, 1842, Palimnodes ducalis (Bates, 1884), Olenecamptus bilobus (Fabricius, 1801),
Acalolepta elongata (Breuning, 1935), Pharsalia (Cycos) subgemmata (Thomson, 1857),
Oberea posticata Gahan, 1894, Sthenias gracilis Breuning, 1938, Glenea (Glenea) t-notata
Gahan, 1889 are reported for the first time from this North-eastern state.
Keywords: Cerambycidae, India, Meghalaya, New Records
1. Introduction
The first record of cerambycid beetle from Meghalaya was as early as in the middle of
Eighteenth century by Thomson as reported by Mukhopadhyay and Biswas (2000) [1]
. After that,
few more species were also reported from this state by Breuning (1938) [2]
. Voluminous work on
cerambycid fauna of this state was made by Mukhopadhyay and Biswas (2000) [1]
and reported
71 species.
Present communication reports 81 species under 53 genera of 28 tribes under 3 subfamilies from
this state of which eight species are reported for the first time from the state of Meghalaya.
These eight species are reported from the old National Zoological collections of Zoological
Survey of India and marked with ‘#’. This documentation also provides a consolidated checklist
of the family Cerambycidae of Meghalaya along with their valid scientific names and current
classification after Delahaye (2014) [3]
and Lamiaires du Monde: http:// www.lamiinae.org/ (23
May, 2013) [4]

2. Study area:
Meghalaya is a Northeastern state of India bounded by
state Assam and country Bangladesh. Total cover of
this area is 22,429 Sq km. The forests of Meghalaya
can be broadly grouped into tropical, subtropical and
temperate types and forest cover is 8,510 Sq km.
3. Results:
Present communication reports 81 species under 53
genera of 28 tribes under 3 subfamilies from the state
of Meghalaya (table.1). The subfamily Lamiinae shares
maximum number of species (71%), followed by
Cerambycinae (20%) and Prioninae (9%) (Figure: 1).

Fig 1: Distribution of cerambycid species in Meghalaya (Subfamily-wise)
4. Discussion:
Among the wood boring insects of the freshly felled
logs, the long horned beetles or roundhead borers
belonging to the order Coleoptera and family
Cerambycidae are found in large varieties and
abundance in the tropics. Seventy percent of forested
land, abundant rainfall and vast variety of timber plants
of Meghalaya also provide these cerambycid borers an
ideal habitat.
But the progress of taxonomic and biological studies
on the cerambycid borers of India and Meghalaya in
particular does not commensurate at all with their
economic importance. No holistic approach has also
been made so far to update the scientific nomenclature
of cerambycids of this state in the light of modern
classification.
Therefore, this consolidated account of taxonomic
knowledge along with current scientific names of the
cerambycid beetles will certainly help to monitor of
these noxious pest in the forests of Meghalaya.
