Instrument (MIPAS-E)
• Limb emission FTS• Day & night• Pole to pole• Regular pattern• Along track & cross track• Various measurement modes• Nominal mode predominantly used
Operation & Sampling
Mar. – Aug. 2002: commissioning phase
Sept. 02 – Feb. 04: ~ 80 profiles/orbit, (Op. phase 1) > 1000 profiles/day
2004: data gaps due to techn. problems
From Feb. 2005: ~ 120 orbits/day at (Op. phase 2) reduced spectral but
enhanced spatial resolution; increasing duty cycle increasing with time, back to 100% duty cycle since Dec. 2007

Long-term validation
Obstacles
– MIPAS-Envisat Level2 data not yet available
• Validation data set defined• Very limited processing with prototype processor
– Little/no funding for experimental groups to do validation work
– Most balloon campaigns after 2004 funded from other sources (not dedicated to validation), 2010 ff very uncertain
– Validation often considered as ‘dirty’ work
– Limited number of balloon measurements hinders good statistics
- Very careful check of atmospheric noise mandatory- Trajectory mapping for increasing statistics

Recent validation examples
MIPAS-E data processing for limited validation data set (MIPAS-E Phase 2)
– L0-L1 processing (Fabrizio Niro):some updates with respect to the current operational processor (that will be part of the coming IPF 5.00)
- truncation of the IGM at 8cm in order to avoid under-sampling - implementation of a patch in the AUX files in order to correct for a bug in the calculation of the
engineering tangent heights
- L1-L2 processing (Marco Ridolfi): ORM (Optimized Retrieval Model): the scientific prototype of the ESA routine Level 2 processor for MIPAS measurements.two different setups of the ORM processor:
- val02_001: reference ESA settings of the OFL processor (in this run the ORM setup matches the setup of the ESA L2 processor V5 as it will be resumed in the coming months)
- val02_002: differences wrt test 001 are:- Cloud Index threshold = 4 (instead if 1.8)- Improved convergence criteria: additional conditions are checked- Stronger regularization scheme: (Variable Strength (VS) method of Ridolfi and Sgheri, 2009, instead of the Error Consistency (EC) method of Ceccherini, 2005 currently implemented in the ESA L2 baseline. )- retrieval at all tangent points if OM defined (instead of retrieval at alternate tg points for some CH4 and N2O below 27 km).

• Validation suffers from non-availability of operational L2 data• Agreement generally within the total combined error• No obvious inconsistencies between MIPAS-Phase 1 and MIPAS
Phase 2 data. Positive biases seem to persist in N2O, CH4, H2O (upper strat.)
• New processor version and particularly V5-exp seems to improve N2O, H2O, and N2O retrievals, but regularization perhaps too strong.
• Stronger cloud threshold seems to improve retrievals in lowermost stratosphere/upper troposphere (at the expense of data coverage)
Conclusions (preliminary)

• Finishing balloon data analysis of past flights useful for validation• Find people and money to do the validation job for all coincident
observations and trajectory matches• Prove consistency of MIPAS Phase-1 data to MIPAS Phase-2 data
