Reasons to choose Long Road

You’ll find studying at Sixth Form College different to studying at school. Our small class sizes mean you will receive more one-to-one attention from specialist teachers. Classes at Sixth Form require high levels of student participation, mature group discussions and will encourage you to develop and express your own opinions. With the support and guidance of our friendly, approachable teachers you will carry out research on varied topics and give presentations to your fellow classmates; developing your research techniques and skills in evaluation and organisation. Perhaps the biggest difference to school is that not all of your learning will be in classrooms. You’ll hear lectures and attend workshops led by business leaders, research scientists, musicians, academics and other experts related to your study programme and future goals.

BE INSPIRED “Teachers prepare students effectively

to cope with higher-level study, an apprenticeship or employment. As a result, students are resilient and focused on achieving their goals. Students successfully move on to high-level apprenticeships, including in chemical or aerospace engineering and accountancy. Most students choose to study at university. They complete their courses and gain high-grade degrees.”

– Ofsted 2020

Your personal Progress Coach will give you tailored advice to help you successfully achieve your career goals. You will attend weekly group tutorials where you will research different routes into your chosen career and identify which pathway best suits your needs and goals.

Your Progress Coach will give you ongoing individual support to get the most out of your study programme, continuously overseeing and updating you and your family on your academic progress. Using this information, you and your Progress Coach will work together to create your own learning plan so you can identify your strengths and clearly see what you need to achieve and monitor your own academic performance.

Reasons to choose Long Road

At Long Road we encourage your learning to flourish with study spaces across our campus and resources easily accessible online. Lessons at college take place between 9:00am and 4:10pm, but unlike school, you won’t spend all day in class. You’ll have independent study periods, allowing you to work on assignments, carry out research and explore your course in-depth either on or off campus. This time will be spent reviewing your class notes, completing assignments, reading around your topics, discovering current research in your field and preparing for your next class. As you settle into life at Long Road you’ll learn how to organise your independent study time, carry out your own research, analyse sources and present your arguments. Much of your independent study time will be spent in our newly renovated Student Centre, which has its own computer suite, or our Learning Resource Centre; a study complex made up of a central library, computer rooms, group study areas and silent study spaces.

Will Miles, Long Road Alumnus 2000 Seabird Ecologist

“I am a seabird ecologist working on Shetland, one of the UK’s top locations for marine wildlife. My A Levels (Biology, Chemistry and Geography taken in 2000) demonstrated many of Long Road’s excellent qualities. I was always treated as a responsible individual and given huge encouragement and support to achieve my best. Professional wildlife research and conservation has been my career for almost 20 years now, and I have worked in a variety of exciting locations in the UK including Snowdonia, the Cairngorms, the Hebrides, Fair Isle and St Kilda. In recent years I have also worked abroad, for example on the Falkland Islands doing albatross and penguin research. I am now based permanently on Shetland and am employed by the University of St Andrews.”

“Long Road helped me by giving me the tools to achieve good grades at A Level and set me up for what a working environment is like. For example, calling your tutors by their first names. Long Road helped me develop some soft skills such as organisation, working together in group projects, time keeping and encouraging students to continue developing even after college. I enjoyed the atmosphere at Long Road and my subjects as I chose them myself. I had good relationships with my tutors and knew they would be happy to help me if needed.”

I found a particular affinity for Biology stimulated by the course content and the enthusiastic teaching, which inspired me to continue onto a BSc in Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia. I am now studying for a PhD at the University of Oxford in Interdisciplinary Bioscience, researching osteoarthritis. The best things about Long Road were the approachability of the teachers, and the academic and extra-curricular provisions. The feedback on my course work and advice on my personal statement helped me get to where I am today. I loved the atmosphere, opportunities and mix of people at Long Road. Going to the gym, studying with friends in the LRC and getting involved with extra-curricular clubs sparked passions and good habits to which I now credit my success. I was given a strong academic foundation for university, and as motivated by those around me to become stronger and be better.”

Level 3 Diplomas are two-year courses which combine practical learning with the study of theory. Although each subject is related to a general area of employment, the skills you develop can be transferred to a wide range of careers. To create a full study programme you need to choose the equivalent of 3 courses; these can also be combined with A Levels – turn to page 52 to see how to do this.

Level 3 Diplomas can be taken as: – an Extended Certificate = 1 course– a Diploma = 2 courses– an Extended Diploma = 3 courses

Level 3 Diplomas are shown on the red pages, from pages 56-92.

AssessmentSome Diplomas at Long Road are assessed fully by non-examination assignments, but others have externally-marked exams.

Entry requirementsAt least five GCSE Grade 4s in a range of subjects including English (a Merit in the subject applied for if taken as an applied course at Level 2). Students with at least seven GCSEs at Grade 4 may include one or more A levels in their programme subject to meeting any additional A Level subject entry criteria. Students with a Distinction grade in a related Level 2 Diploma may be considered with a Grade 3 in GCSE English.

Extended ProjectQualification (EPQ)

Boost your CV and enhance your personal statement while carrying out an independent project on a topic you love. The EPQ is equivalent to half an A Level, but it’s so much more than an extra qualification.

The Extended Project Qualification showcases to employers and universities that you’re an independent learner, able to manage a project, solve problems, organise your time, conduct original research and produce a high-quality product. In fact, this additional qualification is so highly valued that some universities will even lower their grade boundaries for you if you achieve a high EPQ grade! Independence is key with the EQP, meaning you get to choose what you’d like to study and how you’d like to study it. The topic can be related to your other subjects or can be something completely different and you can decide how you present your final product.

You can…• write a dissertation• create an artefact• produce a performance, or• carry out an investigation.

If you decide to carry out the EPQ you’ll start at the end of Year 1 of your Level 3 course, giving you time to think about your goals after Long Road and tailor your EPQ to help achieve these dreams. Although the EPQ is largely independent study, you’ll have a specialist EPQ tutor to keep you on track and regular lessons to help you to understand the requirements of the qualification.

Recent examples of EPQs include:•A leaflet promoting mental health awareness•The restoration of a derelict bicycle•A recipe book for students•A performance of a stand-up comedy routine•A dissertation considering whether or not graffiti should be legalised •A computer built from scratch for under £600•A music speaker made from a beer keg•A children’s book explaining the impact of climate change•An investigation into the impact of music on reaction times when driving•An analysis of Apple’s business model•A dissertation considering the ethics of using stem cells in scientific research.

Of all the sciences, advances in Biology have been unprecedented over recent years and promise to continue to be so in the future. Many of these advances and issues surrounding them have been integrated into our Biology syllabus, such as the growing field of epigenetics and genomic medicine, all while tackling big issues such as the ethics of using animal models in medical research.

On this dynamic, exciting and contemporary course, you will study a range of topics from molecules to ecosystems, and everything in between. You will focus on our physical bodies, looking at how the human body functions when both well and unwell, why the Government are so keen for us to exercise and exploring heart physiology and drugs in sport; you will also explore the psychology of our bodies, debating the issue of nature versus nurture. There is also significant overlap with Geography as you learn about ecosystems, succession, conservation of species and climate change.

Although there is both Chemistry and Maths it is not necessary to study these subjects alongside Biology, although about 50% of our students do; Biology remains a popular subject amongst sixth form students studying a range of courses. A significant amount of the content we will teach you appears regularly in current affairs and our teachers and students love the relevant and contemporary feel of the course.

Take on a challenging and fascinating subject that will change your view of the world and materials by introducing you to concepts and ideas that you are unlikely to have considered before. You will find yourself simultaneously thinking about the incredibly small scale of atoms, nuclei and bonds and the extraordinarily large number of atoms in a single drop of water.

With a central place in science, Chemistry overlaps with both Biology and Physics and is an essential requirement for many careers such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and engineering. The skills in logical thinking and mathematics you will develop are also highly valued by an extensive range of industries such as law, finance and business.

You will study 10 diverse ‘story lines’ including ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere, the causes of colour, designing drug molecules, the origin of elements by fusion in stars, practical synthesis of medicines and the structures and energy changes involved in fuel combustion. As you study these story lines you will develop your understanding of fundamental chemical ideas about bonding, structure, electron arrangements, energy changes, pH, solubility, molecular shape and the feasibility of reactions.

We will encourage and support you to take part in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, the Chemistry Olympiad and give you regular opportunities to use our excellent Chemistry labs to carry out your own experiments.

Criminology is the study of the reasons why individuals commit crimes. You will gain an understanding of why a person commits a crime, strategies we can develop to control crime or rehabilitate a criminal.

You will find out how crime reporting in the media affects the public perception of criminality and explore the social constructions, theories and causes of criminality; and how these lead to changes in policy. You will understand the process of criminal investigations, investigating the prosecution of suspects and learning how to review criminal cases; this supports your learning of the different processes in the criminal justice system and the role of punishment and social control measures in England and Wales. You will also discover how campaigns are used to bring about change and then plan your own campaign for change relating to crime. Throughout your course you will take part in real-life campaigns, forensic investigations and meet members of the police force and other relevant organisations to hear how they approach the task of fighting crime. You’ll be invited on trips to the court, University Taster Days and meet visitors from prisons and local support groups.

Why are footballers’ wages so high? Should students pay for their higher education? Why is health care free in the UK but charged for in the USA? How do the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Bank of England manage the economy? You will discover the answers to these questions on our Economics course; where you will be enabled to understand current affairs, real world issues and the significance of much of the information you hear every day on the news.

Throughout your course of study you will focus on 3 core modules:

• Microeconomics: You will examine the nature of the economic problem and how different societies resolve it. You’ll look at how markets operate via supply and demand and what happens if the outcome determined by the market is not desirable.

• Macroeconomics: This module looks at large-scale issues, focusing on different theories of how the economy operates as a whole and measures of a country’s economic performance.

• Global economics: Looking beyond the UK you will examine theory behind, and the reality of, international trade.

In modern times global politics has become a key part of our everyday lives. Filtering into all aspects of life, from schools to international conflicts, politics is about the art of wielding power, of managing conflict and of offering compromise.

A key part of politics is the exchange of ideas about the nature of humankind and how society should be organised. You will be given the opportunity for regular discussion, drawing on your opinions, research and recent political events; to see and hear prominent politicians and listen to guest speakers such as pressure groups representatives, local MPs and councillors.

You will spend time discovering how political participation through voting, political parties and pressure groups can lead to political change; building on this you will study the workings of key political institutions such as Parliament, government, the prime minister and the judiciary. This will progress to studying the core ideologies of conservatism, liberalism and socialism as well as feminism before examining the interactions of countries as they deal with issues of globalisation, human rights and environmental issues and looking at how international organisations such as the United Nations play an important role in international politics.

Our Politics A level will enable you to study a wide range of degrees including law, journalism, international relations, global studies, conflict resolution and public policy, as well as secure a place on competition apprenticeships with the civil services, local and global charities and local and international businesses.

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. This new take on a popular subject combines fascinating content with a rigorous approach to investigation. Psychologists use a range of methods to investigate human behaviour and the strengths and limitations of these methods is an integral theme that runs throughout the course. Over the duration of two years you will study a range of topics exploring how to plan and conduct scientific psychological research in a practical and ethical way.

This course, like A-level, is very much a science subject. You will learn a lot of new terminology to develop your theoretical understanding of the topics. However, unlike the A level, it is assessed using both coursework and examination. Also, unlike A-level, you will achieve your qualification in stages, not in one assessment after two years. One final difference is that more focus is placed on the application of theory in supporting and improving peoples’ lives.

In year 1, you will explore four key approaches in psychology such as Social, Cognitive, Learning and Biological. You will also look at developing your understanding of how psychological research and concepts can explain gender identity, aggression and consumer behaviour. Your coursework will involve conducting your own research.

In year 2, you will also look at health psychology. This includes the topics of lifestyle choice and health-related issues such as stress and addiction. Your coursework will involve the study of forensic psychology and offender profiling.

You will develop an ability to use precise and succinct writing, a deeper understanding of scientific methods, mathematical applications and the scientific processes involved in designing and carrying out research including the analysis of data and reporting of findings.

Why do girls tend to outperform boys in the education system? What attracts people to join religious sects and cults? How do we explain the recent rise in violent knife and gun crime in the UK? What are the causes of changes in the family such as the rise of lone parenthood and what are the implications for society? Sociology is concerned with social behaviour and asks questions about why society works the way it does and why people behave in the way they do.

Forcing you to look at the world in new ways you will have frequent opportunities for discussion, drawing on your own experiences and opinions; enabling you to relate these to relevant sociological ideas and evidence. As you work on individual, small group and whole class tasks you will develop a range of transferable skills; including the ability to think sociologically by placing yourself in the shoes of others, analyse and evaluate arguments and present information logically.

Your studies will be varied, with visits from outside speakers, film screenings, trips which in the past have included visits to Liverpool and Manchester, and a Crime Conference with ex-prisoners talking about their offending and experience of prison.

Studying Sociology will open doors to a range of further studies and apprenticeships, making you well prepared for careers in Law, Police Work, Journalism, Teaching, Human Resources, Social work, Civil Services, Probation Work, Management and the world of business.
