informationDo You Know?

Located in Seymour’s at the very northern end of the island is Colum-bus’ Point and the location of the Columbus Monument. Atop of a high cliff overlooking the ocean is a monu-ment that was built as a memorial of his landing there on his first voyage in 1492 and it is believed to be his 3rd stop after San Salvador and Rum Cay. There is a spectacular view from the top of the cliff and is a very popu-lar place for tourist.

Long Island Visitors’ Guide6

It is indeed my great pleasure to welcome you to Long Island, heralded as the most scenic of all the islands in The Bahamas. In fact, when the Italian Explorer Christopher Columbus ar-

rived here in 1492, he was so much in awe of its natural beauty, he felt compelled to record it in his ship’s log as “the most beautiful island in the world.” If you are looking for the perfect place to unwind and relax from the outside world, where peace and tranquility abounds, where there is adventure on land and sea, great food and friendly people, you have arrived at the right

place to satisfy your senses and experience the best and most memorable vacation ever! Rest assured you will find many treasures as you explore our island. However, our most prized possessions are the people of Long Island, who are warm and friendly and known for genuine hospitality. Visitors are always welcome and we love meeting new people and making friends. Ask about our acclaimed People to People program for a culturally enrich-ing experience, and a way to truly connect with our people. Long Island offers 80 miles of contrasting coastlines from rolling hills to dramatic cliffs, unique cave systems, beautiful expanses of soft , sandy beaches and numerous peaceful coves to enjoy. We are home to Dean’s Blue Hole, the deepest known blue hole, where in-ternational free-diving events are held. Long Island is a fishing island with some of the best bone fishing and sports fishing in the world. For the diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, the wonders of our underwater life beckon you to an unforgettable encounter. If this is not enough, explore the historical sites from our past, visit the Adderley’s Plantation Ruins, the Columbus Monument, the Long Island Museum and Library and our historic churches. The native restaurants in our charming settlements will entice you to a real authentic din-ing experience. The island’s artisans are the best in The Bahamas, so please take a souvenir of us with you, from shell to straw crafts, the creativity of our people will truly amaze you. But, there is one thing you cannot take with you and that is our famous “long island breeze”, which gives you even more reason to return. On behalf of the Minister of Tourism, the staff of the Long Island Tourist Office and the people of Long Island, we wish you a most enjoyable stay with us and thank you for choos-ing our island. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Our visitor information center is located in Salt Pond, please feel free to drop by. If you are a returning guest, winter resident or second home owner, welcome home!

What islanders enj oy doing on island......

What do you enjoy doing on long island?

Twelve years ago, Mr. Maillis, born in Nassau

and descended from sponge-merchants and Lucayan

Indians, decided to visit Long island to take pictures for

our family produced Bahamian Calendar. He fell in love

with the beauty and tranquility of the island. He relo-

cated his wife and six children to Clarence Town (the

island’s capital), a town of a beautiful harbor in which

we enjoy boating, island picnics, fishing and snorkel-

ing. We found out that there are lots of things to do and

places to explore on such a diverse island. There are many

beaches we enjoy such as Dean’s Blue Hole a natural wonder of the world.

Then there’s the South Side with its many untouched beaches, the Salinas in

which we can kayak, and its shallow sandy turquoise waters, in which there

are bountiful fish. The North side which is rougher but just as intriguing with

many finds of shells and unusual pink sand that we like using for arts and

crafts. We love the adventure and exploration of finding new places on the island just

as Christopher Columbus came to discover the New World of which Long Is-

land was his third stop. The monument is in Cape Santa Maria, it is dedicated

to the people of Long island which were the gentle native Lucycans. Their

history is very interesting; they knew the island like the back of their hands

without any maps and compasses. We enjoy rambling through the ruins of the

islands plantation and salt-raking history.

Rummaging in the bush also brings the rewards of bush tea/medicine

and bird-watching. We relish rural life and the challenges of raising sheep

and wild hog for a mouth-watering beach-roast.

We enjoy sailing and pretty much anything to do with boating. There

is the annual Long Island Regatta in which we and most of the people of the

island get quite excited to watch hand built boats from all over the Bahamas

race against one another. Long Island is a diamond in the rough but it

becomes a treasure to all who get to

experience its raw beauty. In this world

it’s hard to find a beach where the only

footprints in the sand are yours.

What islanders enj oy doing on island......

Our most enjoyable places here on beauti-ful Long Island are all associated with our beautiful waters. Our prayers to God is to have bright ,sunny and calm days! Boating beaching and fishing is our most favorite things to do. I grew up in this lifestyle and fell in love with the amazingly clear , blue waters and the unbelievably pink and white sandy beaches . Long Island is indeed my home and my kids also love it here, we would definitely be lost without Long Island’s sweet nature. This island life here makes our lives interesting and content! So when you visit our Beautiful island make it a must to spend your days on the beach or in the boat to make your vacation a memorable one!

For the past several years our favorite Long Island pastime has been looking for sea glass. We have found our most beau-tiful pieces here, onthe “Northside.” The locations con-tinuously change, even from beach tobeach, as the sand and waves wash it in or cover it. It’s free, it’s fun, it’s beautiful, and it’s healthy.

Sarah and Colin’s Long Island Tropical Dream Wedding in Paradise.

Sarah Wassall and Colin Beechey from Blackpool, England dreamed of a tropical beachside wedding in a flower-covered gazebo, with sun, sand and turquoise sea, and their dream became a reality thanks to the Ministry of Tourism and Stella Maris Resort & Club. They were one of the lucky couples that won the 16 Islands Wedding Invitation, where 16 couples were married on 16 islands in The Bahamas at 16:00 hours on May 16, 2012. The ceremony was held at the Cape Santa Maria Beach in tropical splendor, exactly as they imagined it, with the feel of white sand between their toes, the sound of the ocean lapping on the shore and the fragrance of local Bahamian flowers.Congratulations to the Sarah and Colin!

Customer Care WorkshopThe Bahamas Hotel Association of

Human Resources Professionals (BHAHRP) in collaboration with

the Bahamas Hotel Association and the Ministry of Tourism recently hosted the A.R.T. of Customer C.A.R.E. Workshops for 43 small hotel and tourism industry professionals on Long Island. The first session was held at the Stella Maris Resort and according to Karen Sutherland, BHAHRP Secretary and one of the workshop facilitators,” the objectives of the session were to identify qualities and characteristics of customer service, identify behaviors that build commitment to the delivery of high qual-ity personalized service and also how to build customer loyalty.” The interactive sessions allowed employees to practice how to effectively communicate with guests and focused on how to give exceptional service through the skills of Attention, Respect and Time. The second session was held at the Resource Centre in Gray’s and according to President of the Bahamas Out Islands Promotion Board and attendee Shavonne Darville, “We are appreciative of the part-

Long Island Tourist Office

nership between BHAHRP, MOT and the BHA as training on how we engage and connect with our guests is essential to the growth and development of our tourism product in our Family Islands.” The BHAHRP launched the Family Island training initiative in April, 2012 which will continue over the next few months on other major Family Islands. “In early January the BHAHRP Executive team formed a Family Island Outreach Committee in support of our strategic plans for supporting the BHA small family island hotel initiatives and based on the feedback over the past few days the train-ing was well received and timely,’’ Beverly Saunders, BHAHRP Past President and workshop presenter. BHA President Stuart Bowe applaud-ed the initiative stating “Tameka Forbes, President of BHAHRP and her team are to be commended for recognizing the importance of developing sound customer service skills by industry professionals throughout our country. Often our small hotels don’t have easy and affordable access to expertise who can deliver this high level of training. This collaborative effort demonstrates how we can pull our resources together to help make an on-the-ground difference”. Participants included attendees from Gems of Paradise Resort, Ellen’s Inn, Stella Maris Resort, Cape Santa Maria Resort, Southern Air, Pineapple Air and Winter-haven Resort. “ I enjoyed the session immensely,” Olivia Turnquest operator of Ellen’s Inn,” As small hotel operators we need to make sure we stay up to date on industry ser-vice trends and the Art of Customer Care which can help me and my team improve our guests experience.”

The Ministry of Tourism’s People-to-People program is making its way throughout The Bahamas as

volunteers in the Out Islands are flocking to sign-up to be tourism ambassadors. The program was launched in Long Island recently. Ambassador training workshops were held in Exuma and Abaco prior to the Long Island start. Speaking at the official Long Island launch during a winter residents’ reception, Tourism Minister Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace said his Ministry will continue to spread the program in various islands where there are a sufficient num-ber of volunteers to participate. “As soon as we announce that we’re prepared to establish a People-to-People program on an island, we always expect to get large numbers of people because, quite frankly, a number of them have been vol-unteering for years except not in a formal way,” Minister Vanderpool-Wallace said. People-to-People was not an instan-taneous national program. It started in New Providence and Paradise Island more than 30 years ago and was extended to other islands. Long Island became the seventh island to officially offer the experi-ence for visitors. Minister Vanderpool-Wallace said that the program has always been suc-cessful because it is the highest form of tourism due to the bonds that are created between visitors and Bahamians.“We are always amazed at the large num-bers of people who are volunteers from all walks of life,” the Minister said. “So, we see it growing throughout The Bahamas and in those places where it already exists because it is such a wonderful experience for both parties”. Long Island Administrator, Jordan Ritchie, welcomed the new tourism pro-gram for his island and is looking forward to an increase in visitor arrivals. Mr. Ritchie actually signed up for the program twice. He first volunteered as a People-to-People ambassador while living in Nassau.

“I saw the advantage of it because in Nassau when I was involved in it, I met persons from Australia, persons from England, and we are able to keep that re-lationship going,” he said. “And as a result of that, those persons are continuing to come to The Bahamas almost every year”. The veteran volunteer believes that if Long Islanders are given the opportunity to reach out to visitors in a personal way, they will be convinced to return because of their superb hospitality. He said Long Islanders want to “make this real” in order to generate the repeat business they are seeking. “On Long Island, we know how to handle persons coming to our shores, we know how to handle them,” Mr. Ritchie said. “We are really people to people if we can take more persons to our homes, show them how we live, show them our culture, show them how friendly we are; then, I am certain that they would want to come back”. The Ministry of Tourism will be adding another island to the list. This month, the People-to-People program will be launched in Harbour Island. Another ambassador training workshop will also take place on Grand Bahama in April.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – STUDENTS OF N.G.M. MAJOR HIGHS SCHOOL ADOPTS DEAN’S BLUE HOLE BEACH TO IMPROVE TOURISM PRODUCTStudents of N.G.M. Major High School teamed up with the Ministry of Tour-ism to improve the tourism product on Long Island. Mr. Macon Cartwright, the school’s Principal along with students adopted the the Dean’s Blue Hole beach in February 2011. They recognized the importance of keeping the beaches clean for visitors to enjoy and took great plea-sure in providing a community service that will help to promote sustainable practices, not to mention the visitors that come from all over the world to experience the blue hole, recorded as the world’s deepest blue hole with seawater at 663 ft. deep. Other schools and organiza-tions are welcome to adopt a beach for regular cleanup projects.

Twenty-two, excited, Long Island students between the ages of 9 and 17 recently took a basic airplane training course and airplane ride in conjunction with the Young Eagles Pro-gram, an initiative of the Experimental Aircraft Association. EAA is an international aviation membership association with more than 170,000 members. The Young Eagles Program introduces youngsters to the world of aviation and provides scholarships. Returning from their flight, many of the children said their favorite part was flying over their homes and other familiar spots. Nine year old Isaac Fox was the first and the youngest Bahamian to take part in this program. As the host resort, Stella Maris Resort also delivered drinks and snacks for the kids. “My vision is to see the Flying Eagles program on all of the major Bahamian Islands,” said “Mike Z” Zidzunias, the lead organizer. He noted the success of the Long Island program will be broadcast at the EAA AirVenture aviation show, dubbed the world’s largest aviation celebration.

Tourism is in her blood. Lavern Linda Knowles watched her mother manage a local restaurant, bar and marina as a child and now follows her foot-

steps to ensure that visitors will always remember her beautiful homeland, Long Island. As Supervisor at Southern Air Charter, Lavern believes quality service is key, but she is equally passionate about showcasing the island’s unique surround-ings. Lavern is happy that Long Island is seeing an influx of new visitors such as photographers, environmentalists, pub-lishers and film-makers. And what better back-drop than the turquoise waters and historical sites that greet travelers to this little piece of paradise!

The International Persons Landhold-ing Act passed in 1993 made it easier for non-Bahamians and companies under their control to own property. 1. A non-Bahamian or permanent resident who purchases or acquires an interest in a condominium or property to be used by him as a single family dwelling or for construction of such dwelling must apply to the secretary to the Investment Board to register the purchase following completion of the purchase. 2. Upon receipt of the above the acquisition is registered and a certificate of registration issued. 3. A permit to acquire property is required as a pre-condition to comple-tion of the purchase if the property is undeveloped land and the purchaser would become the owner of two or more contiguous acres. A permit is also required in cases where property being purchased is not for use as a single family dwelling (for example if the purchaser is buying a resort, restaurant or other commercial venture).

4. Non-Bahamians who own homes in The Bahamas may apply to the direc-tor of immigration for an annual home owner’s residence card. This entitles the owner, spouse and dependent children to enter and remain in The Bahamas for the duration of the validity of the card. This is intended to facilitate entry but does not confer resident status. All applications for permits along with fees made payable to the Public Trea-sury should be submitted to the Ministry of Financial Services & Investments for consideration by the Investment Board.

What is Stamp Duty? Although there are no taxes on capital gains, inheritance, corporate and personal income, dividends and interest in The Bahamas there are Real Property Tax and Stamp Duty. A one time Stamp Duty is payable on real estate transactions calculated on the value of property which is not always the sale price and is a prerequisite to having your ownership registered.

Real Property TaxIn respect of owner-occupied propertyup to $250,000 ........................... exempt$250,000 - $500,000 ......................3/4%$500,0001 - $500,000.00 ..................1%$500,000.00 + ..................................¾%In respect of unimproved propertyup to $3,000 .....................................$30$3001- $100,000 ...............................1%$100,001 or more ........................1 1/2%In respect of any other property:up to $500,000 ..................................1%$500,001 or more ............................. 2%
