L o n g C o u r s e T A G S July 23-27, 2014 ~ Austin, TX

Well team, we were spoiled in San Antonio at short course TAGS because the host team provided timers for all sessions. That is not typical. Nor-mally, each participating team at TAGS is responsi-ble for providing timers during the meet. Lanes are assigned by the host team. For every session, TXLA is requiring 1 timer for every 10 swimmers entered in the meet. We do not want LAC to hold up the meet because we are missing a timer!! This is VERY important! They do announce the teams that fail to provide their timers over the loud speaker. LAC has a great tradition of not holding up the meet & getting called out on the loud speaker! ALL families are expected to help time for one session! The lane assignments may not be released until the start of the meet. We are expecting to be required to provide 6 or 7 timers for every morning session. Leslie will break these into 2 hour chunks so as not to overburden anyone. Please text or email Leslie your preferred day. She will confirm your responsibility once TXLA releases the details of our timing responsibility and when she has a schedule of timers completed. Note that team timing responsibilities will also be printed in the heat sheet.

The Brick Oven on Red River is widely considered to be Austin’s best wood-fired pizza—an Austin’s favorite for over 25 years! We are so excited that they are accommodating our team again this year on FRIDAY between prelims and finals. We have “Room E” all to ourselves between the hours of 11:30 and 2:00. This is a come & go, good food & good fun place! Come carb-up before your nap, or grab take-out pizza to take back to the hotel! The owner also wanted to mention that they are normally closed on Sundays but WILL open on Sunday for TAGS & look forward to repeat LAC family visitors! The Brick Oven also is staffing an on-call driver for our team hotel pizza deliveries. To order call: 512-346-9990 See you Friday at the Brick Oven! —YUM!

The Brick Oven is located on 12th & Red River at 1209 Red River St.

Stay with the team! Book NOW!

I hope everyone is excited, I know I am!!Our swimmers are going to do great against some very fast competition from the rest of the state!

It is important for our club to have a pres-ence in the stands. We want to perform at our best & look good doing so! Swimmers and families, please help us demonstrate good sportsmanship and show that LAC has arrived! You should all be ready & be LOUD! We want to have a presence in the stands & show it by sitting together, cheering for the team, and wearing the designated schedule of team attire! Please help us! Here is your guide:

Prelim / Final Instruction:

This is a preliminary and final meet. The top 16 finishers in relays and individual events score points for our team.

In the 11-12 and the 13-14 age groups, the top 16 finishers for individual events will come back to swim in finals. Fi-

nals are limited to the top 8 finishers for the 10 & Under age group.

It is our expectation that all swimmers swimming in finals will nap and rest between sessions! Swimmers that are

not swimming in finals, please be respectful of athletes resting at the hotel. Be careful not to run around making noise

in hotel corridors. Remember we are here to swim fast, not to play at the hotel!!

Warm Up Instruction:

Please arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes before our designated warm up time (see previous page for schedule).

Be sure you are ready to dive in when the warm up starts! DO NOT wear your technical suit (Speedo LZR, Fastskin,

Arena, BlueSeventy, Tracer, Fusion, etc.) during warm up!! Practice suits are for warm up and technical suits are for

racing only!!

Check-In Instruction:

Swimmers are responsible for checking themselves in only for the following events:

Wednesday’s 800 Freestyle has a 3:00pm deadline for positive check in.

Swimmers swimming the 1500 Freestyle on Sunday MUST check in on Saturday by 6:00 pm. Swimmers must

also declare intent to swim morning or evening.

Scratches:

Swimmers cannot scratch an event without a coach’s signature, thus the coach must scratch events for the swim-

mer! Scratches only apply to swimmers who have entered more than 7 events.

Relays At TAGS the top 8 seeded relays may declare whether they swim in the morning at prelims or in the evening at finals. Typically, at finals the relays get recognized by the announcer. Finals are high energy and the kids usually swim faster at night than the morning! LAC will declare relays for finals on all days because we want them to swim in the eve-ning. Coaches may change relay assignments at any point during the meet to maximize team points. Please do not be alarmed should your child mention that their relay assignment has been altered. Please make plans to stay for finals in the evening & understand that we may change things up on Sunday for families needing to get on the road. If you are only swimming a relay on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you do not have to attend early warm-up, but you will need to show up to the meet no later than 10:30 am to warm up for your relay! When you arrive, please check in with your coach so we are assured that all swimmers have arrived for the relay. Finals Even if you do not make the final in your event, we still expect all swimmers to be at finals and support their fellow team-mates on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. We would like everyone who is not swimming in finals to ar-rive at 5:00 pm ready to get in the water to stay loose for the next day’s events. The swimmers are expected to stay until the end of finals to cheer on their teammates! The coaches may decide to have these swimmers leave earlier but it will be up to the coach's discretion. We want to see all our swimmers support the team and show team spirit during finals. Team Spirit It is important to show that LAC is a loud and spirited team. Please come with noise makers, pom-poms if you have them, and be ready to yell loudly! We are planning to have team cheers every session (especially during finals!!!) and ex-pect everyone to participate. Parents, please make every effort to sit together as a group wearing the designated team shirts! We want our parents to make a presence in the stands because there is nothing that gets the swimmers more ex-cited than when everyone from our team is cheering them on! TAGS Parade The TAGS parade of athletes is on Friday, July 25th, before the start of the prelim session. Each team will be introduced and recognized. It is on the parade day that we will be wearing our Swim Like a Boss TAGS themed tee shirt that qualifiers received a the TAGS team practice. There are still shirts (and a few tanks) available for parents to pur-chase. Please text Kelli Zenick at 817-528-0019 to confirm a size before they are gone! This should be a fun event, but please remember we are going to TAGS to swim fast—the paradeis not the time to be high energy! Please note that Event # 29 and Event # 30, the 10 & Under Girls and Boys 200 Freestyle, will start immediately follow-ing the parade. Swimmers in these events should be focused on their race and will have limited participation in the parade as they will need to be ready to swim at the conclusion of the parade. Time Trials Time Trials will be held, time permitting, for TAGS participants between preliminaries and finals on Friday and Saturday. Time Trial entries will be accepted at the Clerk of Course located on deck from 9am-11am on Friday and Saturday. There will NOT be time trials on Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday. The entry fee is $20.00 per event. A swimmer may swim a maximum of one time trial per day. The 800 will only be offered on Friday, and the 1500 will only be offered on Saturday. Time trial events do count toward a swimmer’s maximum event daily count. Please note that a qualifying TAGS time earned during the time trial will NOT qualify a swimmer to enter the event at TAGS as time trials are past the TAGS quali-fying period. Please talk to your coach if you are going to sign up for time trials. Timing Assignments: Each team will have timing assignments for each session. LAC has a great tradition of not holding up the meet or get-ting called over the loud speaker because our parents always show up to time. Leslie Lucas has been kind enough to be in charge of this. She needs every TAGS family to text her the morning you would be available to time. Once TXLA releases the lane assignments, Leslie will text you when and where to be to time. You can reach Leslie at (203)988-3763. Parents you will be allowed on the pool deck if you are a timer, but must check in to get your pass. Do not go on deck without a credential tag. Pool Deck: Excluding parents who are counting for their swimmer in the 800 or mile, or are designated lane timers, parents are not allowed on the pool deck! All swimmers will be given a credential tag (bag tag) to get access to the pool deck. In order to receive a credential tag you may be required to show you USA Swimming Card. Please be prepared and bring your USA Swimming Card to the TAGS meet.

Failure to show team spirit in

Austin is not cool! Come on,

paint your car & decorate a

poster for your hotel door!

Y ou have likely figured out that

TAGS is a big deal, but we’d like

you to fully understand what it is,

and why all the fuss! TAGS is an acronym

that stands for “Texas Age Group Swim-

ming.” It is Texas’ name for our “State

Championship,” the TAGS Championship.

An “age-group” swimmer is a child 14

years or younger. Swimmers 15 years and

older are not eligible for TAGS meets.

There are 2 TAGS Championship meets

held each year: the Short Course TAGS

Championship held every March; and the

Long Course TAGS Championship held an-

nually in July. The 2014 TAGS long course

time standards are listed for you in the ta-

ble on the next page. The Texas Swim-

ming Association sets the qualifying time

standards for these meets in October of

each year. The cuts will change annually

to keep the size of the meet manageable.

There are 3 age groups that compete:

10 & Under, 11-12, and 13-14. Unlike typi-

cal “A” meets, TAGS is widely know as one

of the fastest age group championships

meets in the country! Standards will range

between the AA and AAAA cuts. To swim

at TAGS, one must have achieved a TAGS

time standard in an individual event, or

participate on a relay whose cumulative

times meet the set TAGS time standard.

LAC is poised to compete very well, and we

are expecting our swimmers to show “who

is BOSS!” Enjoy TAGS, swim fast, and

have a lot of fun!

Whether you are a first time TAGS

swimmer, or a veteran TAGS swimmer,

you should be proud of all the hard work

and effort it takes to get here. Remember

that every boss started as a hard worker! I

hope you all fully enjoy the TAGS experi-

ence! For more information on state

meets, please visit the Texas Swimming

association website at: www.tsaswim.org

Best of luck at TAGS!

—Jason Walter, Head Coach

Random items Worthy of Note:

Meet information, psyche sheet, heat sheets, parking info, ticketing information, TAGS FAQ page, and meet timeline are ALL posted on TXLA’s website. Here is the link, click on TAGS meet tab on the right to navigate thru important meet information. http://www.utexas.edu/longhornaquatics/

There is construction around the Erwin Center. Red River St. is blocked in areas. Please allow adequate travel time to the swim center for your hotel. Traffic in Austin can be heavy at any time of day. Best to use parking garage addresses for your navigation.

Get swimmer’s to warm up 15 minutes before designated warm up time.

Bring cash for parking and admission

Bring a parka or sweats. Unlike most pools, this one is air conditioned and wet swimmers will get chilled between races!

Heat sheets will be posted free on TXLA’s website or may be purchased at the swim shop downstairs

While it is fun to mix & mingle with teammates at the hotel, it is also important to respect those athletes who have a very physically demanding 5 days. Please do not run around the hotel between prelims and finals or late in the evening. Plan to socialize with quieter activities such as board games or cards in the lobby. Bring your favorite board game & enjoy your teammates at TAGS!

DO NOT take photos in any locker room or rest room. Viola-tion risks getting thrown out of the meet and substantial fines.

No deck chairs are needed for swimmers at this facility

No stadium seats are necessary at this facility — all spectator seating has back support.

EVERY family is expected to help time for 2 hours. Please text Leslie Lucas any day you might be available. Her num-ber is (203)988-3763

TAGS themed shirts are still available for parents for $14.00. Please text Kelli Zenick your preferred size if you wish to have a shirt at TAGS. We will not re-order shirts. They will be sold first-come, first-served.

Don’t hesitate to call or text any of these seasoned swim par-ents with questions. They are happy to help. The coaching staff would appreciate you directing questions to these swim mom’s before texting the coach. The coaches are very busy during the meet and are difficult to reach by phone.
