“ I am from California, near Anaheim (where Disneyland is). I lived in Austria for a while after high school, but moved to London specifically for the course I’m on. It was a brilliant choice – I am absolutely loving my time in London and at London Met. One of my favorite aspects of the course is that it is hands-on. The entire course is project-based and designed to simulate an actual games studio. We work with the programming course and other courses to get as realistic as we can as to how an actual professional games company works. I think this gives us a huge advantage. Nigel and Fiona, the two tutors who run our course, really go all out to get us work experience and get us prepared to head right into jobs on graduation. I’m actually hoping to continue on to a PhD at London Met, but after that I would like to work (we’re talking dream job here) for Lego, designing models for their video games or figures.”

BSc Hons Games Modelling, Animation and Effects

“ My course involves 2D and 3D animations and character modelling, film production, editing images and VFX, game design and digital toy design. I like it because it gives a taste of different aspects in the field. I’m currently on an internship as a graphic/animation designer for a company in Shoreditch. I was recently involved in a CIMA Challenge, creating a short videoclip last year for London Met students who came third! I also took part in a one-day Toy Jam in a team working on new toy prototypes and pitching ideas, and in a Game Jam with new people where we created a game in 48 hours. When I graduate, I want to work in a 3D animation studio or for a game company, and direct and produce 3D animation.

My best tip for new students is to never give up on what you do. Each and every one of us is talented – so show everyone what you’re made of.”

Our One Campus, One Community project marks a new beginning for London Metropolitan University – and you can be a part of it.

Between now and 2019 we will be investing £125 million to create a single university based in Islington. Currently our art courses are taught in Aldgate and our business and law courses in Moorgate and Aldgate. This will be the first time in our 170-year history that all four of our faculties will co-exist in one location and we are excited by the opportunities for collaboration this brings.

As part of one community based in the heart of north London, you will benefit from:

• improved study and social spaces

• new and updated facilities

• greater synergy between faculties

Our staff and students from our art, architecture and design faculty, The Cass, will enhance the creative and vibrant environment at our Islington campus and engage with the community that surrounds us. Business and law staff and students will be able to share their expertise and provide commercial perspectives to courses in other faculties, engaging directly with students on work-based projects, mentoring, work shadowing and internships.

We are committed to improving the student experience and to involving you in creating a

stronger community. With all our faculties in one place, there will be opportunities for joint initiatives and exciting possibilities for activities outside of your subject or faculty. These will build on our already strong links within our local community, where we are involved in everything from helping local teenagers to build radios, to assisting in sports work placements at Arsenal Football Club, to installing student street furniture in Aldgate.

Our staff include a writer for The Guardian (journalism lecturer Anne Karpf), a housing association board member working with Islington Council’s housing department (lecturer Patrick Mulrenan), the chair of Hackney Community Youth Orchestras Trust (media lecturer Chris Lane) and many more who have deeply embedded community links that help to shape our courses.

One Campus, One Community is a multi-year project. Teaching will start to move to Holloway from September 2017 but with some teaching continuing at our Aldgate and Moorgate sites until at least 2018. We will fully support you throughout any transition to ensure that you gain the best experience from your time at London Met, regardless of where you study.

To find out where you will be studying, please contact our Admissions team on +44 (0)20 7133 4200. See also londonmet.ac.uk/onecampus

Getting involved

Page 31: London Metropolitan University Undergraduate Prospectus 2017/18

Getting involved in a society, taking up a new sport or joining a campaign is a great way to learn different skills, get to know the University and London and, of course, to make new friends.

Page 32: London Metropolitan University Undergraduate Prospectus 2017/18

32 Getting involved

Wherever your interests lie, taking part will also boost your career prospects by adding value to your graduate profile – potential employers are always interested in hearing about the kinds of things you were involved with at university.

Students’ Union

An independent, democratic organisation, London Met Students’ Union (MetSU) voices the views of our students on a range of issues relating to the University and the wider community.

Each and every student has the opportunity to stand and be elected, so if you’re keen to gain experience of working for a large and influential organisation, or would like to help make key decisions about the University, getting involved with the Union is a great way to do so. MetSU is also the place to go for student societies, sports teams, social events, NUS cards (student discounts!), 16-25 Railcards, setting up campaigns and independent advice on a range of academic issues. londonmetsu.org.uk

Student magazine and radio station

Verve Magazine and Verve Radio form London Met’s very own media hub. Tune in online (ververadio.co.uk/listen) to listen to a show or pick up a copy of Verve Magazine to find out the latest news and reviews.

Led by students, both teams are always on the lookout for new talent. Get involved by offering your services as a journalist, graphic designer, DJ, researcher or technical assistant.

Student societies

Music Industry Management Society, Broad Left Society, Tech Innovation and Human Wellbeing Society, Hiking, Walking and Sightseeing Society, Amnesty International Society or the Italian Society and many many more – there’s a whole range of societies to join at London Met, but if none of these catch your eye, it’s always possible to set up your own.

Team sport

Joining the football team or taking up badminton isn’t just about getting fit; it’s also a great way to have fun, make new friends and gain excellent teamwork skills. Rugby, basketball, cheerleading, futsal, cricket, football, badminton, tennis and volleyball are just a few of the sports in which you can participate. Some of our

teams also represent London Met in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships and the London Universities Sport Leagues (LUSL).

The Students’ Union recently launched a Sea of Red team sports card. For only £30 you’ll receive a Sea of Red hoody, a qualified coach for matches and training, assistance with away-day travel, insurance and much more. londonmetsu.org.uk/sport

Fitness and recreation

London Met runs an extensive programme of fitness classes with a variety of exercise, holistic and recreational sports including parkour, volleyball, pilates and boxfit. Our facilities are excellent and include gyms with state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment (open from 8am to late and at weekends), a full-sized basketball court complete with scoreboard, dance studio, and a fitness studio.

Our staff are very helpful and friendly and will happily give you information on the classes and how to become a member. londonmet.ac.uk/sports

There are also a number of excellent sporting facilities around London for you to use and parks where you can cycle, rollerblade, play baseball and even horse ride.

The Rocket complex

We host a wide range of student events at our fantastic venue The Rocket at our Hollloway campus – events include club nights, gigs, freshers’ and student society activities, movie nights and charity events.

The Rocket serves great coffee and toasted paninis, making it an ideal lunch spot. With pool tables, plasma screens, a PlayStation 4, a great sound system and a courtyard garden, it’s a great place to chill out when you’re not in lectures.

Freshers’ fortnight

A whole two weeks of special events at The Rocket including themed club nights, comedy, live music, a hypnotism show, pub quiz and more. It’s the best way to dive head-first into the social life at London Met and make friendships that will last throughout university and beyond.

“ Verve magazine is a Student Union publication for London Met. It is geared towards London Met students, giving advice, tips and all the juicy bits going on in and around uni. I decided to work on Verve as I thought it would be great experience as a budding journalist. It is also fun and a great way to meet people. We have open Verve meetings to decide on content, so that any student that is interested in writing for the magazine can come along and bring their ideas. I think the best piece I have worked on must have been the annual recap. I enjoyed looking back on all the crazy things that have gone on throughout the year! When I graduate I want to either write for Buzzfeed or become a freelancer. My top tips for new students are to get involved! Things are not going to be placed in your lap. Ask questions, be curious and friendly. London Met has a lot to offer, you just have to dive right in.”

“ Verve is the student radio station. Our station is run by students and that allows students a platform to express themselves through music, but also through personalised segments. Radio presenters are in control of their show’s content, as long as it is not anything controversial. As the head of station, it is my role to approve show proposals. I like to meet up with each applicant to really get a feel for their show and make sure they have passion for our station. My weekly real talk segments on my “frizz & go” show have been really fun to work on – one called ‘catch flights not feelings’ was my favourite, because it was motivational and super relatable. I am contemplating at the minute if radio and TV is my career path or if I want to progress as an events manager. Having this role has allowed me to open my options and potentially turn a hobby and passion into a career. My tips for students? Embrace your individuality. London Met allows you to be different and reach your potential. Network, you never know when you may need someone’s expertise. And get involved in as much as possible, making sure you keep your studies as your priority.”

“ I am originally from The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, a very rural area and so London is a significant change. My course is a comprehensive coverage of contemporary art practice and art history, full of lively tutors who enjoy encouraging the students to push and pursue artistic careers and assist them in establishing their own artistic practice – this has been essential to my career development. The ceramics workshop, orchestrated by Fred Gatley has been absolutely paramount. I very quickly realised that ceramics was a material that I loved working with and the ceramics facilities that the Cass has, have provided me with that.

My course offers an extensive archive of networks and contacts that are accessible through the well-connected tutors that the course boasts. Outside of university I maintain a keen interest in the arts, pursuing work experience and internships within galleries and magazines that I feel have benefited my art practice. Once I graduate I will be continuing my art practice – producing, selling and exhibiting my artwork as I am already doing.”

“ I obtained an economics degree from Bocconi University in Milan, where I developed an interest in emerging and developing countries, and then an MSc in Economics for Development at Oxford University, followed by a PhD in Economics from Pavia University in Italy. I have been a research-active academic for the last fifteen years, with areas of expertise in macroeconomics, development and applied economics as well as international business. I have taught students at Oxford and University College London, and published in internationally recognised journals such as Empirical Economics and Corporate Governance. I have also consulted for the Department for International Development (DFID) and the European Social Fund. Employability is playing an increasing part in curriculum development here, and is embedded in all the modules I teach. I host internal and external employability talks and inform students about all the opportunities here, such as the yearly Accelerator business competition. I am very proud that the large majority of my students have secured jobs immediately after graduating, in areas such as finance, retailing and in recruiting. A few have undertaken further studies. “ My background is within visual communication: traditional communication design and in the last 10 years digital product design. I aim to give students as much insight into real-world scenarios, processes and methodologies as possible. Knowing and seeing a student’s potential before they can see it themselves is always a great moment. “ After I graduate I would like to be a police inspector for the Met, so I chose this course because it is specifically related to crime and criminal investigation. I have found it really interesting so far – it is giving us a wide perspective on criminology, and a good understanding of what I can expect from a career in this field. The lecturers have been friendly, helpful, and approachable. In the first year, we visited Marylebone Road Magistrates Court to observe how hearings are presented and what goes on – that was a really interesting assignment. However, this information is subject to change over time.

The University will take reasonable steps to provide the courses and services as described, however, the University cannot guarantee the provision of any course or facility. Some circumstances, such as staff changes, resource limitations and other factors over which the University has no control, such as industrial action or a change in the law or the level of demand for a particular programme or module (please note that this list is non-exhaustive), may result in the University having to withdraw or change aspects of the programmes, modules and/or student services detailed in the prospectus. This could include, but not necessarily be limited to, programme/module content, staffing, the location where the programme/module is taught or the manner of teaching delivery, and the facilities provided to deliver or support the programme. Where circumstances demand an unavoidable change or where it is necessary for the University to discontinue a programme of study, the University will take reasonable steps to minimise the effect and all proposed changes will be notified to potential applicants who have registered an interest in the relevant programme at the earliest possible opportunity as well as being reflected on the course pages on the University’s website (londonmet.ac.uk/courses). It is important that you check our website for the most up-to-date information. In addition, any changes between the prospectus and the proposed course and services will be notified to applicants at the time of making an offer. If you have any particular concerns regarding any proposed changes, you must make the University aware of these as soon as possible.

Should you become a student at the University the teaching, assessment and other educational services will be described in the relevant course handbook and University regulations.

Registration at the University and enrolment on a course will be subject to you complying with the University’s registration procedure and your acceptance of the conditions of enrolment and the University’s regulations (copies of which can be found at londonmet.ac.uk/regulations).

When you enrol you are personally liable to pay your tuition and other fees in line with the University’s Fees Regulations (visit londonmet.ac.uk/regulations). All prices quoted in this prospectus may be subject to change and you will be notified of any such change when any offer of a place is made to you by the University.
