A whole new creative scene has been rising from Bermondsey Street over the past fifteen years. Today it is hailed as one of the coolest streets in London. The iconic City Hall, designed by Sir Norman Foster, is one of the most recognisable buildings in London. restaurant Roast in the heart of Borough Market in 2005. Passionate about the area and its illustrious traders, he set about offering the best of British

seasonal produce sourced right from the market itself.

I really enjoyed English food growing up and I thought we were missing a trick promoting and celebrating so much Indian or Chinese food but ignoring the cuisine of England. That’s how Roast came about; it is about traditional British cooking made with seasonal produce.

Borough Market has been a blessing and an integral part of Roast. There’s nothing better for a restaurant than having all of your produce right on your doorstep. That dedication to fresh, local produce is why we proudly display our ‘Roll of Honour’. It shows where our ingredients come from so when people want to know which butcher or grocers we use, they can look at the Roll and then go shop at those places. There’s one trader on the Shellseekers stand who really epitomises the spirit of Borough Market. Apparently, he gets up at 3am every morning, drives to the Dorset coast, gets on a boat and then dives for scallops. He sells them here later that morning. Passion like that makes Borough Market what it is today.

One of my favourite places to visit in the area is probably one of London’s tiniest pubs, The Rake. They have the most phenomenal selection of beers, about 350 different types in total. It is definitely worth finding if you haven’t been there yet.

The area has really changed since we opened Roast 10 years ago. With The Shard opening just up the road, I’ve seen a mix of businesses relocate here too, the cultural landscape has expanded beyond belief, and big name restaurateurs can now see the value in expanding their empire to the London Bridge area. After all, we’ve seen Gordon Ramsay open Union Street Café, Mark Hix opened Hixter on Southwark Street, and Rainer Becker opened Oblix at The Shard. They all realised that they need to be here because this is a renowned foodie mecca. These new ventures are a testament to our efforts and to the area’s ever changing landscape. The redevelopment of London Bridge station is another good example of this, and increasing its capacity was a smart move. More and more people are coming into the area, to the point that London Bridge Station is now a 24 hour operation.

If you’re new to the area and haven’t visited us yet, I recommend you come and try our amazing oysters and chips, then step right outside the door and head for The Shard - where you can experience the best views in London.

I have lived in the London Bridge area for about twenty years now. My great friend, Andrew Logan had moved into the area and found this amazing warehouse and said ‘Zandra, you have always wanted to do a museum, this is the perfect spot’. It was this very well built, boring warehouse, but then I started to think, ‘I can consolidate both my two studios into one, and I could build apartments on the top of the building to live in. I’d have plenty of storage space and my print-room would fit in too’. That’s when it all sort of came together and I thought, ‘Well, that seems like a good idea’. I’m really lucky that my apartment is also only a short walk from The Design Museum and I’d say I have one of the best views in London. I’m very high up so I can look across at the buildings below. It’s such a colourful place and the landscape is changing all the time. London Bridge welcomes change and embraces the new, whilst maintaining the authenticity of the area. I especially like The Shard and Renzo’s concept of the vertical city. It’s so clever how each of the different elements tie in together to create this little community. It’s an amazing place to visit and it

sits in the middle of an area few will tire of exploring. London Bridge, and Bermondsey in particular, has always had a strong community of artists and creatives working or living in the area. Andrew Logan and his father, Peter Logan, were based here doing their sculptures. Norman Akroyd, who is one of the top academicians in this country, has got his etching press just down the road. You also find wonderfully artistic people visiting Jay Jopling’s White Cube and the smaller independent galleries looking to buy artwork and sculptures. You have got one of the top fashion auction houses Kerry Taylor, just down the road, so I think it’s a wonderful place to be.

If you’re not familiar with the area, I suggest you wander around, explore the little back streets because there’s still a lot of character to be found. I am so proud to call London Bridge my home. As I stand on my balcony, it reminds me what it was like when I was in New York years and years ago, watching all the other buildings going up around me while I enjoyed the sanctuary of my colourful little home. It truly is a wonderful area to be in and it’s only going to get better and better.

Iconic British designer Dame Zandra Rhodes revolutionised textile design with her famously bold and expressive style. She founded the Fashion and Textile Museum on Bermondsey Street in 2003 and continues to live in the

heart of this creative district.

Whilst Teach First is a national charity, London Bridge is a great central location for all our employees as well as our participants to travel to. When we first started out I never thought we would have grown so quickly to become the largest graduate recruiter in the country. We’re lucky that London Bridge was able to cater for our growth spurt.

It’s clear to see that London Bridge is now an international hub for businesses, whether your company is old, new, big or small, there is room for everyone. Take a walk down some of the smaller streets to find start-up companies and independent shops, then walk down another to find global organisations. Many of our corporate partners are based not far from the London Bridge area, such as Accenture, UBS, Deloitte, Bloomberg and RBS, and just 10 minutes on the Jubilee line is Canary Wharf where more Teach First supporters, such as Barclays and KPMG, are based. Being so close to many of our partners is a great advantage; it means we can easily meet face-to-face and take them to one of the many great yet small independent coffee shops in the area. You certainly won’t find that sort of authenticity in Canary Wharf. We often come together

to host team lunches and picnics on Potters Field Park, which is a great place for our employees to hangout and enjoy some time in the sun. Another Teach First favourite has got to be Borough Market. Mainly for the brilliant range of fresh food stalls but also the typically British pubs you can find hidden away down the old cobbled streets. We are also really lucky to enjoy inspiring views of the River Thames and Tower Bridge, which I think really help to motivate staff and visitors alike. When you look at the skyline of London Bridge you can see how much it has changed over recent years. With The Shard going up and the redevelopment of London Bridge station, the area has been through a great deal of regeneration over the last 10 years and it is only set to get better.

If you’re visiting London Bridge and looking for something to do, I suggest you take a leisurely stroll down Bermondsey Street for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Or enjoy some fresh air in Potters Fields Park and walk along the river and listen to live music in The Scoop. The possibilities are endless.

I was born at Guy’s Hospital, my parents married in Southwark Cathedral, and I have been living in the London Bridge area for fifteen years. Harry (Parr), lived in Bermondsey, and between our childhood homes was Borough Market. We loved going there and eight years ago we had thought, ‘wouldn’t it be fun to set up a stall there on the weekends?’

We looked around Borough Market and thought that they were lacking in sweet things. There were lots of bunxious meats to gorge on but you were hard pushed when it came to dessert.

We thought jelly would be genius! It would be cheap to make and we wouldn’t need much kit to make it. Little did we know what we were letting ourselves in for! We needed a lot of kitchenalia and jelly moulds, and with Harry’s architectural background, we set to make our own.

What I like about working with food is the powerful emotional reaction it evokes in people. You get to engage on an intellectual level but you don’t have to understand the entire context or history of food to really get it.

The project that I am most excited about right now is our Alcoholic Architecture bar. We’ve partnered with Borough Market to create a walk-in cloud of

breathable cocktails. The response so far has been tremendous and we’ve seen a lot of happy faces, the most important thing is that people are having fun.

When we started the project we did an enormous amount of research into London Bridge and the market itself and found out that there was an ancient on-site monastery in Borough Market. The monks would turn a surplus of goods and grains into alcohol and as a nod to that we’ve used Dom Pérignon, Chartreuse, Bénédictine and even the notorious Buckfast Tonic Wine in the drinks menu.

My dream project with our new London icon, The Shard, would be to generate a lot of historical map research and to use dowsing rods to prove that The Shard is at the center of all of London’s ley lines. I doubt that will ever happen and being the tallest building in Western Europe, it doesn’t lend itself well to jelly either but as soon as the building rose I wanted to work with it. It is jolly useful when navigating about town and I like how it has drawn people down to the London Bridge area, away from the mainstream of the riverside. It sits alongside some of my favourite local spots, including Cross Bones Graveyard, El Vergel for great Latin lunches, the beautiful family-run Lord Clyde pub, and the amazing Southwark Barbers.
