The June executive meeting was held at the home of Sharon MacDonald. The focus of the meeting was the convention. We have a very successful convention. There were many participants in the show and the auction. There were lots of fish to see and lots of good buys at the auction. If the positive comments that were received were any indication, it seems that everyone enjoyed themselves at the convention. The members of the LAS can be proud of themselves for hosting the event. Maybe we can do this again in 30 years.

President’s Message I hope that everybody had a great summer and have all their plans for the show and auction. Welcome back and here we go on another season of showing and breeding at the regular meetings. With all the good weather we had I hope our finny friends got all the extra care that they need. The Jar Show for September will be Loaches, Suckers and Catfish and there will be an open class as usual. Let’s start the

year off with a great turnout for the show at the meeting. Roger Van DerAa will be doing a talk on closing down the outside ponds and getting them ready for winter. I have heard a lot of good comments from the advertisers that they are seeing LAS membership cards a lot more this year and that makes them happy to see they are getting support from the members, so do not be afraid to show that card and also introduce yourself to the shop owners. See their ads in the bulletin. Gone on holidays to the east coast. Ron Bishop President

Lighting: How it helps your aquarium's inhabitants By Drs. Foster & Smith Aquatic Veterinary Staff

An important component of an aquarium that often gets overlooked is lighting. Since light rays do not penetrate easily through water, generally the deeper the tank, the more intense the light source should be. Put simply, the visible light spectrum (what we see in a rainbow, for instance) combines to form white light. Plants use the red-orange part of the spectrum, while invertebrates, such as anemones and corals, thrive in the blue to violet range. Vertebrates, like fish (and us), do well with full spectrum lighting.

Lighting is not only important because it makes it more enjoyable to view the tank, but it is essential for fish health. Fish cannot close their eyes to sleep, so they need lighting to simulate day and night to help prevent stress. It is up to the aquarist to simulate the natural photo period in the tank, either manually, or by the use of timers to do it automatically.

Halides Halides can be used if you wish to highlight a particular part of the aquarium in the form of a spotlight or in the case of a reef tank, certain types of shallow water corals will benefit from this intense lighting. Halides used close to the water surface will need to have a cover over them to filter out the UV portion of the light and also protect the bulbs from water splash and potential breakage.

Tungsten or Halogen Lamps Although economical, these lamps are not for aquarium use. They not only run hot, thus using up more energy and possibly heating your tank more than you'd like, but they do not provide the correct spectrum of light for plant growth. Condensation forms easily on them, making them a hazard.

Fluorescent Lighting Fluorescent lights are the easiest way to illuminate an aquarium. Available in an array of colors, an aquarist can decide for himself which ones to utilize so as to best serve - and best highlight - his aquarium inhabitants. Three basic types of fluorescent lighting are used for different purposes.

• Color Enhancing Lights are designed to display the colors of your fish to their fullest. These lights have ayellow or pink hue to them and complement the full spectrum lights that have a much more white appearance. This type is used in either fresh or saltwater. Fish, plant, and reef aquariums can be more vibrant with the help of a color-enhancing bulb.

• Full Spectrum Lights are designed to simulate maximum daylight. The intensities may vary depending on whether it is to be used for freshwater plants or saltwater corals. In both cases, the lighting provides the food for growth. Freshwater plant tanks need a full spectrum of light and reef aquariums need an intense amount of full spectrum in combination with actinic blue light.

• Actinics give off a blue hue to meet the necessary requirements for coral growth. They provide the correct spectrum of light for proper photosynthesis of symbiotic algae in corals.

Remember that your average hardware fluorescent bulb will not provide the needs of an aquarium. These bulbs promote the growth of black algae, and do not enhance the look or health of your tank. Only use lights specifically made for aquariums. Compact Fluorescents These high-output lights perform like fluorescents, but last longer and use less energy. These lights are designed to provide the proper lighting needs of your aquarium while taking up less space. Also popular are Halide/Compact Fluorescent combination fixtures. Choosing the right lights for your aquarium is a matter of personal taste and your inhabitants needs. The right lights help you enjoy the beauty of your investment as well as keep your inhabitants healthy.
