    MATHIEU LEHANNEUR

Mathieu Lehanneur is a French designer who has developed therapeutic objects and furniture, working with scientists, psychiatrists and health pro-fessionals.Lehanneurs work is interesting because it addresses the relationship be-tween the user and the product focusing on desire, repulsion, dependen-

cy, dosage and most interesting of all: suggestion or the placebo effect. This last one is the nemesis of the pharmaceutical industry (millions lost on

failed test), and probably stands as a huge obstacle at the prospect of scien-tifically demonstrate the possible effects of a therapeutic architecture.

Lehanneur, rather than rejecting or denying the existence of suggestion, embrac-es it and turn it into some of his therapeutic objects that are now part of the permanent collection of MOMA museum in New York:

Onion medicine: this design wrapping presents a more in-stinctive relationship to the dosage of a medicine. Suggest-ing an improvement of the patient by reducing the appar-ent ingested drug as the treatment goes by.

    enfermedades neurodegenerativas.

Michael Graves exemplifies the case of a person educated as an architect that due to an accident or unexpected condition starts working on accessible design, driven by his own daily realityHis first designs where focused on hospital equipment, a place where he spend

a lot of time on, including an improved indoor wheelchair and hospital room furniture.Besides being an accomplished architect (although some of his postmodernist buildings are ranked among the ug-liest in the world), he was a member of the New York Five and has received more than a dozen honorary doc-torates. Graves is a consultant to the Obama administra-tion and has worked with the army in an accessible hous-ing project (more than 2.000 houses) for war veterans

injured in the line of duty, called wounded warrior project, which is especially interesting considering that military budgets are above standard and its industry sometime involve technological advancements. There are several conditions that can be found in these veterans (blindness, pa-ralysis, amputations, burns, brain damage, etc) but they all have in common is the effort of making the house look just like any other mainstream house, invisibly and properly equipped to facilitate the adaptation and healing of the wounded soldier. Unfortunately the American approach to healing and overcoming a critical stage

Legit is a comedy series broadcasted by FX network (US), introducing a person with muscular dystrophy among the main characters. The series brings some controversy due to addressing vertain adult themes such as independent living, sex and drugs, sex. Consternation in the audience was ex-pected, though finally it didnt come within the disabled community, since they somehow appreciated Legit for including characters with disabilities, being re-markable the participation of actors with real disabilities from the company Per-forming Arts Studio West (except the main character, due to the heavy burden of long shooting sessions). The absence of characters with different abilities on television is a fact which resembles the ostracism to which certain racial minorities have suffered on tele-vision and advertising in not so distant times. Series like Legit bring a change in attitude about how you perceive the community of people with different health needs, showing them as the human beings they are, and not as caricatures or convenient stereotypes.

  • The micro-architecture is a pedagogical shock thera-py that through a scale shift and an unusual working format, delivers an exercise of synthesis of the concept studied. Although at first glance building something small may seem easier than some-thing big, in architecture building a good model is not necessarily more difficult than constructing a building. When working with the human body, the complexity of its geometry presents an increased difficulty that, later when translating a design of a simple element such as an orthogonal wall-ceiling encounter,

In our case, the issues we faced each week were:

The physical difficulties of the condition The spatial and sensory limitations The psychological and social difficulties of the condition The positive aspect that each condition carries, due to its own limitations Recreating these difficulties in a construction for its first person learning Recreate the positive aspects of this condition and translate it into architectural language

The first approach was trying to recreate the physical limitations of the mus-cular dystrophy (during the walking phase) so that a regular person could experience how the space is perceive by them.A low cost harness system was proposed, consisting in trimmed Coke plastic bottles with EVA foam lining on the edges to avoid cuts, and stranded with elastic gross grain tape from shoe industry. Many different technical solutions were proposed for the movement restriction gizmo, mostly elastic, though the final version would be pneumatic.

    33

  • SOC

    34

The second approach focused on the social conditions of an MD per-son, especially wheelchair bound, has to face on a standard situation. Mirrors are used like in a subma-rines periscope to simulate the eye level of a wheelchair user, and side mirror reflect other people faces when watching you wear a huge and weird cardboard device. This idea will later be developed on the situations chapter, using the pool to overcome the first impres-sions and taking the eye height of a wheelchair user as a basis for other designs.

The third approach was inspired by the Reading of the book Dialogos con Axel by Antonio Perez Fortuny, an author with muscular

dystrophy, describing how the traumatic experience of pushing the body to exhaustion

forced the writer to start assigning a subjective value to the space around him, measuring the energy necessary for every inch, every step or

every time he stood up from the chair. The way to make a regular person feel this was a

graphic interface emulating a battery indicator, in this case the meter would show how many energy the person have left, as if he/she had MD, forcing the user to carefully measure each

one of his movements and learning to make the best out of it. Ultimately, this is a subjective tool

that acts differently in each person, the goal is to teach the user what is really important for himelf: a self-knowledge and wisdom that

people with muscular dystrophy often have.

    37

The pneumatic solution was an analogical ver-sion of this subjective valorization of space idea, which would be used to confront the user with the decisions to be taken when facing an increasingly restricted mobility.

The muffs were manufactured using duct tape and inflatable pool toys. The vest helps to put together all the gear, it was made on laser cut DM with increase elasticity due to the wood bending cut pattern that were tried and tested during previous weeks. The whole apparel needs five steps to be wore, so special signalization was implemented to indicate the order, using perler beads glued to the elastic grosgrain tapes.

internet customized adver-tisement or GIS (geograph-ic information system), these tools have a great im-pact on architecture, stand-ing as an impartial judge of human behavior, they can show better ways to design and sometimes uncover the mistakes com-mitted in the past, increas-ingly reducing the freedom of the designers. Some of this analysis tools could be included under the third person catego-ry, thats about to change: augmented reality is hitting hard. The graphic inter-faces are yet to be design, although its not hard to imagine how they might look like, having in mind

  • the conceptual art of mov-ies, there is one underes-timated source that have been addressing this issues for years and could be con-sidered the main reference: videogames. The industry of video game has become bigger than the cinema and music indus-try. Some video games like Call of duty claim to be the biggest entertainment launch in history in terms of income (a first person shooting war game, fol-lowed on the list by GTA, a carjacking and criminal related game); some of the 3D graphic motors tech-nology developed by the videogame industry are later implemented by the film industry or even some of the CG that architects use; some products like the xboxs kinect camera are

purchased by universities to be used on multiple in-vestigations fields; the Eu-ropean average age of vid-eogame players is 35 years old, equally distributed in both genders. This is just a list of facts to have in mind before approaching the issue of videogame as a source of knowledge. The main in-terest for architecture is the spatial perception: videog-ame in particular have work with multiple spatial views, the human eye equivalent is the first person, but there others and some of them have an equivalent archi-tectural view: 2d elevation

view, top view, isometric, third person, etc. All of them incorporate addi-tional levels of information on their interface: menus, maps, indicator, clocks, etc. And some of them propose an approach to space-time that is beyond the capa-bilities of a human being, they could be extrapolated to devices such as goo-gle glasses, acting both as a subjective information gathering device and visual interface.
