Organizing a BEST Team

• Carefully read the rules and the technical data.

• Review the construction materials allowed.

• Designate a key person and assistant for each of the following areas:

– Game Rules

– Robot tasks and strategy

– Joystick and CORTEX Microcontroller

– Batteries and Chargers

– Mechanical/Structural systems

– Materials

– Documentation (Notebook!)

– BEST award components

• Double duty may be necessary.

• Read the rules and technical data again. 3

Organizing a BEST Team

Determine which members of the Teacher / Mentor team can help with which skills

Who understands the Engineering Process

Who can help students create Engineering Notebook

Who has shop skills

Who can help with presentation skills for Marketing Presentation for BEST Award

… etc.

Follow the Engineering Process

1. Define the Problem Read the Rules Determine All

Requirements Research Similar Designs Inventory Resources

Available

2. Brainstorm Strategy and Design Possibilities

3. Evaluate the Strategies & Design Approaches

4. Analyze Several Alternative Solutions

5. Select Strategy & Preliminary Design Configuration

6. Accomplish Detail Design Build Prototypes if

Necessary

7. Build & Test 8. Modify if Necessary &

Retest 9. Document Process &

Decisions (Don’t wait until end!)

10. Deliver Product

6

Page 7: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Engineering Process

The Engineering Process is an important part of the BEST program

Be sure students understand and follow it!

Be sure the Notebook does a good job of documenting that they followed the process!

The Engineering Process comes in different formats – Use whichever you desire

Brainstorming Approaches

Must live within the design space

Review brainstorming rules before beginning

• See page numbered 43 of Coach Survival Guide

Let the Creativity Flow

Don’t let the team marry the first idea

Beware of “you / we can’t…”

“you / we have to…” 9

Page 10: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Gallery Method

Can be used in small or large groups to develop design alternatives

Each member sketches a design idea

All sketches are posted

Every member can comment on any idea

10

Page 11: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

6-3-5 Method One way to begin generating Design Alternatives

6 team members

3 ideas each (described in words or pictures)

5 team members review each design idea

No discussions during the process

Can be modified to N – 3 – (N-1)

11

Page 12: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Decision Matrix

One method to choose between ideas that came from brainstorming See page 44 of Coach Survival Guide for

process

Narrow down to ~5 best ideas

Come up with Factors that will help you make the decision

Create the Matrix and fill in the values

BEST Software Licensing Options

Page 16: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Download Instructions

Software Download Instructions are available on the USB memory stick in the Teacher Packet provided at Kickoff registration, in Software folder, filename 2015 Software License Instructions_8.24.15

They can also be found at the following location: 2015 Software License Instructions

The EasyC license is for EasyCV5. The specific key for your team is provided in the Teacher Packet. For questions, contact Linda Scott at [email protected] or 720-250-6896.

16

Page 17: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

BEST Award

Refer to page 54-59 of Coach Survival Guide for some ideas

Refer to Score sheets to get an idea of what Judges will be reviewing 2015 Score Sheets

Be sure your teams are aware of all of the subjects in each of the score sheets

Better teams will make sure they cover each of the subjects, and that it is easy for a Judge to be aware of that!

Exhibit team will talk through the items without being quized!

Use same brainstorming, etc. to work on these components as you used for robot design

17

Page 18: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Safety

Keep your team safe – teach them safety rules and make sure they follow them!

Learn some ideas from Coach Survival Guide page beginning page 50-52

Have them pass a safety test in order to get a card allowing them to work with the tools (idea from one of you(!) at TMI)

Be sure they document their safety processes in their Engineering Notebook!

18

Page 19: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

Teacher / Mentor Roles

Students will gain the most if THEY do the work!

Teachers and Mentors should provide guidance only Demonstrate Skills

Teach the Engineering Process

Help them with group decision making process

Teachers / Mentors should not Make any of the parts

Design any of the parts

Try to sell your ideas to students

Game Demo & Introduction

Task Set 1 – Repair the Mine

Goal: Repair the mine to make it safer.

Fix the air filtration system – move the filter from the Spare Parts Rack on Ground level and place it in the air filtration system in Sublevel 1

Fix the broken pipes in Sublevel 2 – move the replacement pipe from the Spare Parts Rack on Ground level and place it over the broken pipes (this example does NOT score)

Page 26: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

26

Game Demo & Introduction

Task Set 2 – Extract Materials from the Mine

Limestone Aggregate is moved from Tunnel 1 to Robot Starting Box

Coal is moved from the Coal Chute Tray in Sublevel 1 to Coal Bin on Ground level. (Rotating the support beam for the Coal Chute Tray is the tiebreaker)

Page 27: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

27

Game Demo & Introduction

Task Set 2 – Extract Materials (Cont.)

Magnetite (Iron Ore) from Iron Deposit in Sublevel 1 to Iron Bin on Ground level

Bauxite (Aluminum Ore) from the Aluminum Vein in Sublevel 2 to Aluminum Bin on Ground level

Chalcopyrite (Copper Ore) from the Copper Cart in Sublevel 2 to Copper Bin on Ground level

Page 28: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

28

Game Demo & Introduction

Task Set 2 – Extract Materials (Cont.)

Spodumene (Lithium) from Lithium Tower in Sublevel 3 to Lithium Bin on Ground level

Core Samples from Core Sampler in Sublevel 3 to the Spare Parts Rack on Ground level

Page 29: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

29

Game Demo & Introduction

New twist… Commodities (Coal, Magnetite, Bauxite,

Chalcopyrite and Spodumene) may have their values changed between Seeding, Semi-final and Final rounds due to Market Shift

If all the teams are gathering mostly the

same ore in a given phase, the value of that ore will drop in the subsequent phase

Team Strategies should take this into account!

Page 30: Lois Walton - Rocky Mountain BEST

30

Game Field & Pieces

• Sublevels 1-3 are UNDERGROUND and only the tunnel doorways are “open”.

• Obviously you can’t move game field pieces or robots through the walls.
