Counselor TIPS
Let’s talk about Bullying A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.
This definition includes 3 important components: 1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength. 4. Forms are available online
Four types of bullying
● Physical: involves repeated hitting, kicking, tripping, blocking, pushing, and touching in unwanted and inappropriate ways.
● Verbal: involves ongoing name-calling, threatening, and making disrespectful comments about someone's attributes (appearance, religion, ethnicity, etc.).
● Social: involves deliberately preventing someone from joining or being part of a group, whether it's at a lunch table, game, sport, or social activity.
● Cyber: harassing someone by spreading mean words, lies, and false rumors through e-mails, text messages, and social media posts.
Dealing with Cyberbullying: • Speak to your child about what apps they are using • Speak to your child about privacy settings• Don’t respond or retaliate with the bully • Report the page/post • Unfollow and block the bully • Report the situation to the school, and/or the police if you feel unsafe • Encourage your child to take some time off of social media and engage in other activities.
Possible Signs of Bullying: • Any change in behavior (louder, quieter, angrier, sadder)• Being scared to go to school or take part in their usual activities• Unexplained illness like tummy bugs and headaches• Disturbed sleep• Bed wetting• Injuries• Distress after using phones or tablets• Lost or stolen belongings
What can I do?:• Don’t panic. Stay calm and reassure your child that you will work through this together. • Ask your child what they need. It is important that they can feel some control over the
situation • Reach out to your school counselor (especially if it is taking place at school)• Encourage your child to think about people that they can trust and enjoy spending time
with (friends, teachers, family members, etc.)
What should I NOT do?
● Don’t dismiss their experience ● Don’t tell your child to fight their bully
