I have established a network of
detractors that help me identify my
weak points. I approach them early
on in the development of a new idea,
so I can build a more effective case.Daniel VennardMars, Inc.

Create cultural alignment Practice Code-Switching
When I think of our failures, they came when we got too faraway from our core. Were a sportscompany. For people to get excitedat Nike, it has to tie back to this.Sarah Severn,Systems Innovation, Nike.

Build trust Be generous
I remember one of the rst communitymeetings we had. We were describing how wewanted to work together on pilot programs, andstart a process of experimenting, and learning andexploring. One of the community leaders stoppedme in my tracks and said, Before we go any further,I want to be really clear. This may be a pilot to you,but this is our lives. We dont need more people tosweep in and try to save us.Amy Chen

The hunger to belong is notmerely a desire to be attached
to something. It is rather sensing
that great transformation and
discovery become possible whenbelonging is sheltered and true.

Its human nature to find theflaws in an argument. If you
present your idea as fully fl eshed, you set yourself up for critiqueand you limit the potential fordeeper engagement by others.
Instead, consider how youcan present your idea in a way
that allows for other people tocontribute. Youre more likelyto end up with a better idea aswell as people who feel greater
ownership of the outcome.
Whether analogue or digital,
the benefit of belonging to thecommunity for many will beconnecting with others in thetribe. Human connections
are best, but digital tools arebecoming increasingly effectiveat connecting people.
Jive, Yammer, Facebook
and Opal are all great toolsto connect intrapreneurs withtheir supporters. Nikes GirlEffect team established
a physical space on Nikescampus that included inspiringimages and quotes as a way
to keep the project visibleand create a playful space forcommunity connections.
Stories ignite community bybuilding intimacy and offering
a sense of shared experienceand principles. Stories are alsokey to fostering knowledge flows
within any organization.
Giving people space to speakcandidly and unrestrictedly about
their work fosters learning andunderstanding particularly acrossorganizational siloes.
Too often we defer to simplescripted updates on a busy
meeting agenda rather than carveour space for genuine sharing.
ENGAGE WITH QUESTIONS RATHER THAN ANSWERS. FACILITATE UN-SCRIPTED SHARING AND STORYTELLING
CREATE SPACE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY TO CONNECT.

A Collaboratory is a mash up
of collaboration + laboratory in essence, collaborating forinnovation. Collaboratories can beas simple as a one-day workshop
or as complex as a long-term,multi-stakeholder project.
The beauty of a collaboratory is
that it gets actors from variousparts of the system speaking toone another. Youll be surprised athow disconnected all the players
are and how much they will learn.
The goal of the collaboratory
process is to build a communityof players who have a sharedcommitment to a commonpurpose and who see the benefit
of working together to change thesystem.

Over the past five years we have sought
to make social intrapreneurship partof the formula for how we think aboutchanging the world. Our initial foraysinto the field began with John Elkington
in The Social Intrapreneur A FieldGuide for Corporate Changemakers.
Building on this initial study,we stepped out and rallied greater
institutional support to invest in thecreation of a network for corporatechangemakers. In the Fall of 2012,The League of Intrapreneurs was born
with support from Ashoka, Accenture, the Inter-American InvestmentCorporation, GlaxoSmithKline,
Standard Chartered, Virgin and anumber of other partners.
The Cubicle Warriors Toolkit grows
out of our experiences working in thetrenches with leading change-agentsat large institutions. The creation of thistoolkit would not have been possiblewithout input from leading experts
and practitioners, including membersof the League of Intrapreneuers.
We would especially like to thank:
Gib Bullochat Accenture andRosario Londono at the Inter-American Investment Corporationfor their support in helping us grow
this community and contributing tothe mounting canon of knowledge inservice of social intrapreneruship.

Over the coming decades,an accelerating pace of change
will test the resilience of every
society, organization andindividual. The balance ofpromise and peril confrontingany particular organization
will depend on its capacityfor adaptation. Hence, the
most important question forany company is this: are wechanging as fast as the worldaround us?
