APPRENTICESHIP• Minimum Qualifications: Be 18 years old and have a high school

diploma or GED.

• Average starting wage: About 50% of a journey worker’s (person who has completed apprenticeship) rate of pay.

• Length of training time: 2-5 years to complete, depending on industry.

Be paid to learn a job.

Steps:

1. Finish High School or get your GED.

2. Get a job, during high school, show up on time and get good recommendations from your employer.

3. If there are classes in your high school or local 2 yr college that relate to the job you want, take them.

4. To apply: apprenticeship committees take applications for their own programs. They advertise in local schools, 2 yr colleges, newspapers and community organizations. Apply to the ones you are interested in.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUT-OF-STATE EDUCATION

1. Tuition is usually much higher for out of state students attending public 2 & 4 year schools.For example: An Oregon resident would pay $7,605 tuition at SOU, but a California student attending SOU would pay $20,933 tuition.

2. WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) Program is an agreement among some colleges in the Western United States, to require approximately tuition and one-half. Student must apply for the program. See WUE on line for specifics.

Money borrowed that has to be paid back, usually with low interest.

Work StudyCollege provides jobs for students, allowing student to earn money while attending.

Ways to Earn College Credit While in High School

1) Take classes at RCC while attending high school Sign up for Pathfinders at Logos to earn

college/high school credit. Logos pays the fees.(Deadline to apply is February each year)

2) Take Southern Oregon University Classes through

Early Entry Program (pay reduced tuition) Costs: $67.00/credit instead of $175. Must be

11th or 12th. Obtain required forms from my mailbox through your ES.

A great career exploration tool:

Take the ASVAB Test on November 7th, 2012at Logos from 9 a.m. – 12 noon (11th & 12th graders only)

Sign up on Logos website

Why do this: It is free and you can’t fail it.

The test helps you determine your interests & abilities.

Given by the United States Military, but not obligated to the military, if you choose to take this test.

Results will be explained in an evening meeting at Logos several weeks after the test.

It may be part of your planned course of study – talk to you ES.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS1. College Fair: 9a.m. – 12 noon on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Medford Armory. For all 9-12th grade students and their parents. Sign-up to let us know you are interested on Logos website, but not required to attend. FREE

2. PSAT: 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at North Medford High School. For all 10th and 11th graders. FREE for 10th graders, costs $15.00 for 11th graders. Scoring well may provide National Merit scholarship opportunity for 11th graders (only). MUST sign-up on line at Logos website & pay at Logos BEFORE Wednesday, October 5th, 2012.

3. ASVAB: from 9 a.m. – 12 noon on Weds., Nov. 7th at Logos. For 11th and 12th graders wanting to explore their interests and abilities on a FREE test. Must sign-up at Logos website before Nov. 1st, 2012.

4. FAFSA Night: at North Medford High School in December (date yet to be determined). Watch Logos website.
