About the AuthorHoni J. Bamberger, a former full-time classroom teacher, was one ofthree principal investigators from the University of Maryland who worked,from 1989–1995, with the teachers of Project IMPACT. She was a mathe-matics specialist offering ongoing support and teacher inservice to theteachers in this research study. She spent most of her time working inclassrooms (Kindergarten–Grade Five) with students whose teachers par-ticipated in this study. In 1995 Dr. Bamberger joined the faculty at JohnsHopkins University as a research associate at the Center for SocialOrganization of Schools. Between 1995 and June 1997 she developedthe first- and second-grade Math Wings program, and piloted it in twenty-five different classrooms across the country. Dr. Bamberger is currentlythe Executive Director of INSIGHT, a private center for research andmathematics staff development, in Columbia, Maryland.

In the ten years since the NCTM Standardswere first published, mathematics educatorshave continued to discuss what content andprocesses need to be used to enable all childrento understand and use mathematics. As aresult of these discussions Standards 2000 willhave more developmentally appropriatecategories (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12) and willinclude representation as one of its five processstandards. The key content standards are con-densed, and numeration, measurement, geom-etry and spatial reasoning, probability andstatistics, and algebraic thinking are the areasto be taught to students.

The posters, puzzles, and problems in thisbook are meant to help students do severalthings:

s draw logical conclusions (which reinforcesthe reasoning standard),

s learn to justify their answers and solutions(which reinforces the reasoning standard),

s use different representations (diagrams,tables, Venn diagrams, and matrices) toorganize and explain their thinking (whichreinforces the new representation standard),

s reinforce various vocabulary terms that areused throughout mathematics (which rein-forces both the communication andconnections standard), and

s introduce and review concepts and skillsthat are taught in the intermediate grades(which reinforces each of the content stan-dards listed above, in addition to problemsolving)

Why Teach Logic in Math Class?For all of the reasons that I’ve mentioned andthen some. The problems foster communi-cation in the classroom, both verbal andwritten. Using these puzzles and postersreinforces the important skills, concepts, andvocabulary that students tend to forget.

IntroductionIn 1989 the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) firstdisseminated its Curriculum and Evaluation Standards in an effort to helpteachers better understand what mathematics content students needed toknow to become mathematically literate citizens. Over the last ten years,mathematics teachers have shifted their mathematics program so that therewas more of a balance between problem solving and computation, betweenconcepts and skills, between independent activity and cooperative activity.Throughout the country teachers have embedded the four “process”standards (problem-solving, communication, reasoning, and connections)into their lesson plans as they think more reflectively about what childrenneed to know and how children learn mathematics.

How to Get Started and When to Do These ActivitiesThe different problems and puzzles in thisbook can be used to begin any mathematicslesson. They are a way to “turn on yourstudents’ minds”—to get them thinking. Theycan also be used outside of your regular mathtime in an effort to spend a bit more time rein-forcing various mathematics vocabulary, skills,and concepts. Some teachers do “calendar”activities each morning. These puzzles fit innicely with other daily routines. My studentssolved these logic problems while they waitedto go home, when there was five minutesbefore lunch, or when someone was finishedwith an assignment and wanted to know,“What should I do now?” One year our schoolhad so many snow days that we needed toextend the school day by fifteen minutesduring the last month of school. We did a logicposter problem each afternoon.

The activities in this book work well as awhole-class activity, for independent centers,and for students to do while working in pairs.

The pages in this book have been designedso you can use them as reproducibles or withan overhead projector. Working through aproblem while using an overhead projector is agreat way to model how to solve theseproblems.

In addition to teaching logic, some of theconcepts and skills covered in the book are list-ed in the chart on the right.

I like to start these activities by displaying theposter and having students spend a fewmoments looking at it and thinking of differentobservations that they can make about it.Students should then brainstorm with eachother and record some of these observations.Once students have had adequate time to lookand then write or discuss, encourage them toshare their observations with the rest of theclass. It is likely that this part of the lesson willtake as much as 30 minutes. No more than oneor two logic problems should be given follow-ing this discussion. On subsequent days, youcan use a poster-problem to begin the mathe-matics lesson.

Once all of the problems from one posterhave been completed by your students, encour-age them to generate their own problems, testthem out to see if they work, and then givethem to one another. A different poster can beused during each quarter of the school year,providing your students with many opportuni-ties to review mathematics vocabulary andrefine their reasoning skills.

The following teacher/students exchange(using the garden scene) demonstrates howa class might use these posters:

TTeeaacchheerr:: Today we are going to use this posterto solve logic problems. Before we beginworking, spend a minute looking at theposter. Think of different things that you cansay about what you see.

Once students have had time to look and think,have them work with the people at their table (orin their group) and write down some of the obser-vations. Give students about ten minutes to dothis, or whatever amount of time seems appropri-ate. When students have completed this, havesomeone from the group share the observations.These papers can be displayed around the posteras a reminder of the class’s observations. Someof the things that the students might say include:

Logic PostersCommunication plays an important role in helping students make sense out ofthe many mathematics concepts, skills, and vocabulary that they are learning.Students build a meaningful understanding of mathematical ideas when theyare actively involved in the process of learning. Colorful posters and activitiesthat foster rich language experiences encourage students to participate fullyin mathematical activities. In this way, the connections that students make aredeep and long lasting. The colorful posters and accompanying logic problemsencourage discussion, promote cooperative group work, and stimulatecreative expression. They also give you a chance to model how to solve logicproblems so students can work independently later.

SSttuuddeenntt:: There are 42 corn plants in Paulo’sgarden, 25 corn plants in Kim Yen’s garden,36 corn plants in Takani’s garden, and 32corn plants in Eric’s garden.

TTeeaacchheerr:: How did you figure out how manycorn plants were in each of these gardens?

SSttuuddeenntt:: I multiplied. Paulo has 7 corn plantsgoing across and 6 going down. So, 7 times6 equals 42. I did that for each of thegardens.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You can do that for other vegetablestoo. Paulo has 6 cabbage plants. Takani has7, Eric has 16, and Kim Yen has 11 that goaround the perimeter of her garden.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You could count all of the plants ineach garden. I bet that some of the gardenshave a total of more than one hundredplants.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Well, maybe that’s something thatsome of you would like to do. What are someother things that you can say about thisposter?

SSttuuddeenntt:: Each garden is different. Nobody hasexactly the same amount of any kind ofplant.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Takani has the same amount of greenpeppers as Kim Yen has carrots. Both ofthem have 10.

It is likely that students will continue this discus-sion sharing all of the different things that theytalked about in their group.

TTeeaacchheerr:: I’m going to reveal the first clue and Iwant you to think about what it means andwhether it describes one or more of the gar-dens. Don’t raise your hand, just think aboutwhat the clue tells you. Then I’ll give youtime to talk with your partner about whatyou were thinking.

Reveal the first clue and read aloud: This gardenhas an even number of corn plants. Once stu-dents have had time to think and pair with theirpartners, ask them to share, out loud, what thisclue tells them.

SSttuuddeenntt:: This clue tells me that it could bePaulo’s garden because he has 42 corn plantsand 42 is an even number.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It can’t be Kim Yen’s garden becauseshe has 25 corn plants and 25 is an oddnumber.

Students may suggest crossing it out, covering itwith a “Post-it,” or putting a piece of paper over it.I find Post-its work best.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It could also be Takani’s or Eric’s gar-den because Takani has 36 corn plants andthat’s an even number, and Eric has 32 cornplants and that’s an even number also.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, the first clue tells us that KimYen’s garden isn’t the one that the clue istalking about but it could be any one of theother three. Let’s look at the second clue.Just like before, first think about what it’stelling you and then I’ll give you time to talkabout this with your partner.

Reveal the second clue and read aloud: This gar-den has an amount of tomato plants that hasfactors of 2, 3, 4, and 6. Give students time andthen ask them to raise their hands to talk aboutwhat the clue tells them.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It could be Paulo’s garden because hehas 12 tomato plants. All of those numbersare factors of 12.

TTeeaacchheerr:: What do we mean when we say thosenumbers are factors of 12?

SSttuuddeenntt:: It means that you can divide 12 by 2,3, 4, or 6, and there won’t be any remainder.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It could also be Takani’s garden. Shehas 24 tomato plants and that’s anothernumber that could be divided by 2, 3, 4, or 6without any remainders.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It can’t be Eric’s garden. He has 16tomato plants. 2 is a factor of 16, and so is 4,but if you divide 16 by either 3 or 6 you’ll

have a remainder. So we need to cover upEric’s garden too.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Let’s read the next clue and see if ittells us whose garden is being described.

Reveal the third clue and read aloud: There aremore carrots than green beans in this garden.Give students time and then ask them to raisetheir hands to talk about what this clue tells them.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Paulo has more carrots than greenbeans. He has 15 carrots and only 14 greenbeans.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Well, Takani also has more carrotsthan green beans. She has 12 carrots andonly 11 green beans.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Both Takani and Paulo have 1 morecarrot plant than green bean plant.

SSttuuddeenntt:: This clue didn’t help us figure outwhich garden is being described.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Sometimes a clue isn’t very helpful infiguring something out. Let’s look at thenext clue.

Read the fourth clue aloud: There is an oddnumber of cabbage plants in this garden.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It can’t be Paulo’s garden because hehas 6 cabbage plants and 6 is an evennumber. The garden being described has tobe Takani’s. She has 11 cabbage plants.

These problems can be done with an entireclass as a warm-up to the mathematics lesson.They may also be used by students at a“center” or for independent seatwork.

My students used problems that I createdas springboards to write their own numberlogic problems. The problems that they wrotewere often far more difficult than any that Icreated.

Number Logic ProblemsThere are 25 number logic problems on pages25–31. The first five problems have a two-digitnumber as the answer. The second fiveproblems have a three-digit number as theanswer. Problems 11–15 have four-digitnumbers for answers. The problems in thefourth group have a five-digit number as theanswer and the last five problems have adecimal fraction as the answer. When workingtogether as a class, reveal only one clue at atime and have students suggest several possiblecorrect answers for each clue, until the finalclue reveals the one, correct answer.

Arithmetic Logic ProblemsThe problems on pages 32–34 provide studentswith arithmetic practice at the same time thatthey use their intuitive number sense andunderstanding about what happens to numberswhen they are added, subtracted, multiplied,and divided. These are great to use as“openers” to your mathematics lesson, or theycan be used for homework or “challenge”work. Many students like to make up their ownproblems once they have had opportunities tosolve a variety of problems given to them bytheir teacher.

The following teacher/students exchangemodels how to “turn students’ minds on”before your mathematics class begins.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Today we will use clues to figure outthe number that the clues are describing. Asa clue is read, I will ask you to keep yourhands down and think of a possible correctanswer. You will have ten seconds to do thisand then you will be given twenty seconds toshare your answer with your partner. Onceeveryone has had a chance to do this, I will

The problems also give them a chance to use mathematics vocabulary incontext. When vocabulary words are taught in isolation, students frequentlyforget their meaning and then are “stumped” when these words appear inword problems and on tests.

Reveal the first clue: This number is a three-digit number. Wait while students think and thenwhisper their answers to their partner. Then callon at least ten different students to share theiranswers. After a student responds say, OK. Thenrecord their answer on the transparency or onchart paper.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Could all of these answers be correctbased on the clue that we have read? (After astudent answers, continue.) What does itmean for a number to be a “three-digitnumber”?

Have several students respond. Then reveal thenext clue: This number is a multiple of ten.Again, give the students about ten seconds tothink and then have them whisper their answers totheir partner. Call on several students to sharetheir answer. *Notice how to respond to an incor-rect answer.

SSttuuddeenntt 11:: It’s a three-digit number, and it’s amultiple of 10.

TTeeaacchheerr:: What does it mean to be a “multipleof 10”?

SSttuuddeenntt 11:: It means that you can multiplysomething times 10 and you’d get the num-ber. 30 times 10 equals 300.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Can anyone else explain what a “mul-tiple of 10” means?

SSttuuddeenntt 22:: If you divide the number by 10then you won’t get a remainder. 10 goes intothe number evenly. 300 divided by 10 is 30.

TTeeaacchheerr:: What are some other possible correctanswers that go with the first and secondclues?

SSttuuddeenntt 33:: 450

TTeeaacchheerr:: How did you know that 670 would becorrect?

SSttuuddeenntt 44:: It’s like what was said before. If youmultiply 67 times 10, 670 is the product.You have to think: Is there a number whichwhen multiplied by 10 will equal a three-digit number.

If the student is unsure of what to do, ask one ofthe students who defined what is meant by a multi-ple of 10 to say what that means again. Then askif there would be a remainder if you divided 589by 10. If the student is unsure, do the computa-tion with the class and show what occurs. Thenask if 589 is a multiple of 10. It is likely that thestudent will “change his or her mind.” Then ask forseveral other numbers that would fit both cluesbefore giving the next clue: This number hasonly even digits.

The following is a teacher/students exchangefrom a fifth-grade classroom where studentsare solving the first problem in this section ofthe book.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Today we are solving a different kindof logic problem and will use somethingcalled a matrix to help us solve it.

Show students the first problem and the matrixand ask them to tell you what they see.

SSttuuddeenntt:: The matrix is like a square withdifferent parts.

SSttuuddeenntt:: There are names across the top of thematrix and different kinds of drinks alongthe side.

SSttuuddeenntt:: The squares in the middle are empty.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Will someone read the logic problemand then I’ll read one clue at a time and wecan use the matrix to solve it.

Have a student read the problem out loud andthen read the first clue.

SSttuuddeenntt:: What does it mean that Jamie andSandy are good friends? What does that haveto do with which drink they like best?

TTeeaacchheerr:: Does anyone think they know howthis clue helps us solve the problem?

SSttuuddeenntt:: I think that it means that Jamie andSandy can’t be the people who like skimmilk the best because they are friends withthat person. So Jessie has to be the personwho likes skim milk the best. Jamie andSandy are good friends with Jessie who likesskim milk the best.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Does that make sense to all of you?What can we put in the matrix to help usremember that it’s Jessie who likes skimmilk the best? We also need to put some-thing in the matrix to help us rememberthat Sandy and Jamie do not like skim milkthe best.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You could put a check where Jessieand skim milk come together and then putan 3 in the same row under Sandy andJamie.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Or you could color in the place toshow that Jessie is the skim-milk person andput an 3 under Sandy and Jamie.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You also need to show that Jessiecan’t like any of the other drinks the best.So you’ll need to draw 3’s underneathJessie’s name.

Logic With a MatrixUsing a matrix to organize information is a great way to solve certain logicproblems. A matrix helps students isolate the information that is helpful insolving the problem and eliminate the information that is no longer needed.Logic problems that have three variables have a very different looking matrix.Without this visual representation, information is difficult to remember andconsequently difficult for students to use.

The next clue says, SSaannddyy lliikkeess aabbeevveerraaggee tthhaatt hhaass aann oodddd nnuummbbeerr ooff lleetttteerrss..Take ten seconds to think about this andthen whisper what you think to yourpartner.

Once students have had this time, call on severalstudents to share their ideas.

SSttuuddeenntt:: Spring water and orange juice bothhave an odd number of letters. There’seleven letters in both of these drinks.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, what does that mean?

SSttuuddeenntt:: It means that we still don’t knowwhich person likes which drink the best.

TTeeaacchheerr:: OK. Let’s read the next clue. JJaammiieeddooeess nnoott lliikkee ffrruuiitt jjuuiicceess.. What does thisclue tell us?

SSttuuddeenntt:: This means that Jamie can’t likeorange juice. Orange juice is a fruit juice.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, what do I need to do on thematrix?

SSttuuddeenntt:: You need to put an 3 where it showsJamie and orange juice. Then you can colorin where it shows Jamie and spring water. Ifhe doesn’t like orange juice the best, then hehas to like spring water the best.

TTeeaacchheerr:: OK. Now do we know which beverageSandy likes the best?

SSttuuddeenntt:: When you put an 3 under Jamie andorange juice that just leaves Sandy andorange juice. So, Sandy likes orange juicethe best. Color in that square.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Let’s look at the matrix and see if itshows us who likes which beverage the best.You’ll need to record your answers so it’seasier to see them. Look over the matrix andreread the clues, checking to see that theanswers make sense.

Venn diagrams, developed by Englishman JohnVenn (1834–1923) are a powerful problem-solv-ing tool allowing students to display attributesor information from two or three different sets.Teachers often use this visual representationwhen discussing the characters in a piece ofliterature or when making observations aboutthings in science class. The Venn diagram logicproblems that follow provide students withproblems where they will have to add and/orsubtract to figure out answers. In most casesthe Venn diagram provides them with a meansof seeing how the information from theproblem will look.

The following is a teacher/students exchangefrom a sixth-grade classroom. This will helpyou see how to use these problems with yourown students.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Think of something you can say aboutthis.

Show students the Venn diagram and ask them todescribe what they see.

SSttuuddeenntt:: There are two ovals that cross overeach other.

SSttuuddeenntt:: The ovals are empty.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Has anyone ever used one of thesebefore, or seen one of these?

SSttuuddeenntt:: We use these to write characteristicsof characters in a book. Sometimes twocharacters have characteristics that are thesame and you write those in the middle part.

SSttuuddeenntt:: The middle part means that the infor-mation is the same for both of thecharacters.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Has anyone used these in any otherclasses?

SSttuuddeenntt:: We used them in math class in thirdgrade when we did data collection.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, this diagram has a special name.It’s called a Venn diagram. It’s actuallynamed after a man named John Venn whoused these to solve logic problems. We’regoing to use them to solve logic problems,too.

Show the first logic problem to the students andask them to silently read the information that isgiven to them.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Let’s label the two ovals to help usorganize the information from the problem.Think about what this (Point to the firstoval.) might have as its label.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You need to write the name of one ofthe favorite flavors of ice cream on top ofeach of the ovals.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, this loop will represent thestudents who like fudge swirl as theirfavorite flavor of ice cream and this oval willrepresent the students who like chocolatechip as their favorite flavor.

Add the labels.

SSttuuddeenntt:: It says that 5 children only likedchocolate chip.

SSttuuddeenntt:: You need to put it inside the loopthat says chocolate chip in the part thatdoesn’t overlap with the fudge swirl loop.

TTeeaacchheerr:: How did you know that this wouldbe the best place to put the 5?

SSttuuddeenntt:: The overlapping part would be forpeople who couldn’t make up their mind,and they said that they liked both choco-late chip and fudge swirl the same.

TTeeaacchheerr:: OK. Would someone read the nextclue?

SSttuuddeenntt:: 8 children only liked fudge ripple.

TTeeaacchheerr:: So, where should we write thenumber 8?

SSttuuddeenntt:: The 8 needs to be inside the otherloop in the part that doesn’t overlap.

SSttuuddeenntt:: 8 people liked only one kind of icecream best.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Would someone read the nextstatement?

SSttuuddeenntt:: Some children liked them both thesame.

TTeeaacchheerr:: What do we know from this clue?

SSttuuddeenntt:: We know that there needs to be anumber in the middle, but we don’t knowwhat this number is yet.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Let’s look at the last clue and see if ithelps us figure out how many students willneed to go in the center. Would someoneread the last clue?

SSttuuddeenntt:: 22 children were surveyed.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Talk with your partner and take aminute to figure out how many people willgo in the intersection of the two loops.

Give children a minute to do this. After someonehas given an answer be sure to ask them howthey figured out the answer they shared.

SSttuuddeenntt:: The number 9 has to go in the center.

TTeeaacchheerr:: Did anyone get a different answer?

TTeeaacchheerr:: How do you know that 9 is thecorrect amount?

SSttuuddeenntt:: If you add the 5 and the 8 that equals13. But the last clue says that a total of 22students were surveyed. So, I subtracted 13from 22 and that equals 9. So, 9 studentsliked both chocolate chip and fudge swirl thesame.

The following Venn diagram problems can be usedas a “warm-up” before beginning mathematicsclass or they can be used as independent work orpaired work for students.
