Volume I

This is Volume I of the proceedings of the 1st European Conference on Argumentation: Argumentation and Reasoned Action, held at the Argumentation Lab in Lisbon, Portugal, in June 2015. The European Conference on Argumentation (ECA) is a new pan-European initiative aiming to consolidate and advance various streaks of research into argumentation and reasoning: philosophy, communication, linguistics, discourse analysis, computer science, psychology, cognitive studies, legal theory, etc. The proceedings comprise what we think is the most complete statement of the state of the art of argumentation studies today across these disciplines. From ancient rhetoric to Artifi cial Intelligence, and from analytic philosophy to detailed empirical research, the contributors examine argumentation theory and practice with a special focus on argumentation aimed at reasoned action. It’s gratifying to have all this research collected in one source and realise the breadth and depth of the lively debates in argumentation studies.

Preface

Whatweareofferingyouherearetheproceedingsofthe1stEuropeanConference on Argumentation: Argumentation and Reasoned Action,heldattheArgLab,NovaInstituteofPhilosophy,UniversidadeNovadeLisboa,9-12 June2015,Lisbon,Portugal.TheEuropeanConferenceonArgumentation(ECA)isanewpan-Europeaninitiativelaunchedin2013aiming to consolidate and advance various streaks of research intoargumentation and reasoning. ECA’s chief goal is to organise, on abiannual basis, a major conference that provides an opportunity forexchanging research results andnetworking in all areas related to thestudy of argumentation: philosophy, communication, linguistics,discourseanalysis,computerscience,psychology,cognitivestudies,legaltheory,etc.WhilebasedinEurope,ECAinvolvesandfurtherencouragesparticipationfromargumentationscholarsallovertheworld.

Theproceedingscomprisewhatwe think is themostcompletestatementof the stateof theartofargumentationstudies today.FromancientrhetorictoArtificialIntelligence,andfromanalyticphilosophytodetailed empirical research, the contributors have submittedargumentation theory and practice to a thorough examination. It’sgratifyingtohaveallthisresearchcollectedinonesourceandrealisethebreadthanddepthofthelivelydebatesinargumentationstudies.

Theproceedingsaredividedintotwoprintedvolumes.VolumeIincludes36longpapersalongwiththecommentariesonthemdeliveredduringtheconference.VolumeIIcomprises10regularpaperspresentedwithin three thematic panels, as well as 71 regular papers from thegeneral conference programme. All these papers were subject to adouble-blindpeerreviewoftheScientificPanelofmorethan50expertsinthefield,whoevaluatedextendedabstractsforlongpapersandshortabstractsforregularpapersbeforetheconference.Asaresult,outof286submissionsnearly200wereacceptedforpresentation.Mostofthemarecollectedhere.Wehaveexcludedposterpresentationsandinvitedkey-note addresses by John Searle, Isabela and Norman Fairclough, andSimonParsons.

Asacollaborativeeffort,theseproceedingscannotbepublishedwithout duly acknowledging, first, João Sàágua, FabrizioMacagno andGiovanni Damele, ArgLabmembers whowere part of the ECA Lisbon2015 Organising Committee.
