LANDHOLDERS WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE LOCAL LANDSCAPE
Teviot Brook is found in the upper Logan catchment and joins the Logan River
approximately mid-way through the catchment.
The program focuses on the upper reaches of the
catchment which has connectivity to the Border
Ranges Biodiversity Corridor, including the
Gondwana Rainforest World Heritage Area.
Unmanaged stock access, weed infestations,
erosion and fragmented vegetation have
threatened the health of the waterways here.
SEQ Catchments has been working with 17
landholders along various sections of this Brook
that extend to approximately 9 km, to manage
existing threats and improved the condition and
overall resilience of Teviot Brook.
Landholder commitment and contribution have
been an important catalyst for this program.
Works have occurred on neighbouring
landholders, thereby increasing the resilience
within the whole system, not just on a single property.
The high level of engagement was praised by Colin Hastie, SEQ Catchments
Community Partnerships Manager for Logan and Albert catchments.
The united effort by the landholders, and their attitude in teaming-up to improve
the management of their creek lines on the Teviot and on many of the other
minor creeks in this stretch of the Teviot Brook should be applauded, he said.
Works have included the stabilisation of banks, fencing to control stock access, off stream watering points and planting tree and vegetation along degraded
waterways.
As a result, the area has seen improved biodiversity connectivity in the Logan
catchment, better soil management and reduced erosion, as the roots of planted
species bind the soil together, controlling run-off into watercourses and
eventually Wyaralong Dam.
