Collaboration Log for GVC1114 A joint project of ADHS Canada, Littleton HS Colorado USA, and Kedainiai Atzalynas gymnasium, Lithuania. Students primarily communicated through twiducate. This system was somewhat frustrating, as it doesn’t provide an easy way of grouping threads for messages, but the students nonetheless generated several hundred messages during the process of topic selection, introductions, layout planning, and content creation. They also communicated by email. The supervisors of the 3 students teams communicated regularly by email to keep things flowing smoothly, and to share ideas and get advice from one another. Madeline, Denae and I are working on the made up festival. We've decided that this festival will help education, and we've also decided that the profits from this festival will go to schools in need. There will be a main section/page about the festival and how it helps, then we will include a navigation bar with links to a page going more in depth about what you do at the festival, and a link going to the page about how it will help. We are still creating the festival, but we have the general idea of it. Once we start forming the festival more, it will be easier to give more details about it.

Feb 02, 2012 - 11:07 AM by: Alyssa (2)

Denae and I are working on the Made Up festival for the United States and were wondering how the students in Canada and Lithuania got started in creating their made up festivals. Would anyone be able to give us a starting point or something to go off of in means of creating the festival? We were thinking about relating to the idea that "music is therapy", but don't know where to go from there.

How can we add a "helping focus" to our website topic? Here's what the contest says about it:

Helping Focus (20%): To what extent does the website help users share cultural differences and/or understand environmental or social responsibilities and/or helps others and/or learn about key topics or issues? The new helping focus criterion was added to encourage students to also demonstrate achievement of a helpful objective such as personal, social and/or environmental responsibility or support for a worthy cause. A helping focus allowed students to share their community experiences through the Global Virtual Classroom and learn about key topics and issues...

Our design team is currently working on...

William, 3D navigation graphic design

Danny, navigation artwork animation and graphics

Resse, finishing navigation site map

Resse/Evan, compiling a list of graphics and animations required for the website navigation

We ask that you please start researching on the strange festival’s already provided when, where, why. What events/competitions take place during the festival? The history of how the festival started leading up to the present day. How far away do people come from to participate in the festival? What kind of booths/games are there? What is the timeline of events that occur during the festival? And anything else that helps the reader understand about the festival, and any other interesting facts about the festival.

If you can find out if there are any differences in the way our countries celebrate traditional holiday’s that would be most helpful. Canada and America are very similar in many festivals and celebrations but I’m not sure how Lithuania might differentiate. For example Lithuania I believe celebrates Christmas a little differently and I know that thanksgiving is a little different in America as well. So we could use thorough descriptions of the traditional holidays we all celebrate.

Thanks!

Nov 18, 2011 - 11:24 AM by: Joseph (0)

the only holiday that America celebrates that is different than other countries is Thanksgiving. This day is celebrated this year on November 24th in which we eat a massive feast consisting of cranberry sauce, turkey, and corn bread, stuffing, gravy, and other similar dishes.

Nov 16, 2011 - 1:52 PM by: joe (10)

We need to hear what holidays all three of our countries celebrate so if Lithuania and America could post some general holidays we all might have we can determine which ones to include on our site.

We need Lithuania to post there top 4 or 5 strangest festivals of their country please.

Nov 14, 2011 - 10:55 AM by: Evan (0)

We need you to post all your different festivals of your country. Joe already posted several from the USA which is good, if you have any more that would be great, the more the better. We have a few for Canada; Cornfest- which is exactly what it sounds like, we have an entire festival of corn. We also have Riverfest which isn't exactly a strange festival but it is still a festival so please post any and all ideas so we can stay in communications.

Nov 11, 2011 - 11:15 AM by: Evan (0)

we did some more brainstorming on ideas for the web site we think that the headless chicken should be our"mascot" and lead the main page parade also if you roll over a certian float it will state the name of the festival also having flags on the floats to represent the country havin the chicken head on all the festival pages saying somthing intresting about each randomly mabey a firework transition from the main page the individual ones also have a tool bar seperated into countries and for the main universal holidays bringing you to a page the lets you decide which country to go to possible also add a quiz and or mini games

Nov 10, 2011 - 11:23 AM by: William (0)

We are working on the front page navigation design. The idea we have come up with is a parade theme. For every different festival there will be a different float representing that festival. The floats will go by on the screen and once they go off the screen they will loop back to the beginning again. We are thinking of adding a fast forward button so that you can move the floats along faster than there normal speed. Let us know what you think of this idea.

One more suggestion: according to the sample http://www.smarts.lt/ we could make the entrance page animation where similar bubbles (or some other flying objects) represent the country. Inside of the bubble could contain the flag, map or the name of the country.

Nov 06, 2011 - 12:56 PM by: Gabriele (1)

Our suggestion: make an animation for the entering: a camera coming into the class through a window (as in the example http://youtu.be/rb82TUYoa88?t=12s) focusing onto the wall where it is

written "Global Virtual Classroom 2011" and then globe appear with the countries; globe could be like navigation for the page.

Nov 06, 2011 - 12:54 PM by: Gabriele (0)

For a menu option put all the labels on fire works, and when clicked they will make diffrent explosions.

Nov 04, 2011 - 10:12 AM by: Joseph (0)

For navigation we could have a map with each of our countries and then when you click on each it goes to the information about that country.

Nov 04, 2011 - 10:03 AM by: Louisa (6)

we should make a search bar if we have a broad topic like festivals

Nov 04, 2011 - 9:29 AM by: William (0)

We have one more suggestion for the topic of our project: here is the link http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/gallery/2011/aug/10/worlds-strangest-festivals-rituals-in-pictures to one article. It would be a nice idea to search for information about the strangest festivals in the world in those pristine locations and present it in our website.

Oct 21, 2011 - 10:07 AM by: Gabriele (7)

Hello,

We are a group of students from Kedainiai, Lithuania, and we would like to suggest the topic „Water — the source of life“. We think we should care about our environment.

Oct 17, 2011 - 12:18 AM by: Gabriele (3)

I like a lot of the ideas that I have read so far! I was thinking there could be a way that we can combine some of these ideas to create a site that discusses stereotypes with teenagers, including ideas like the gender roles and how media, including videogames effect teens, and how they are sometimes misrepresentated as negative or to blame for many modern problems.

Oct 17, 2011 - 1:51 PM by: joe (1)

An idea that i had was a site that recommends things to people according to what their likes are. For example, putting in a song and it recommends other songs that are similar. The only problem is that we would need a huge database.

Oct 13, 2011 - 10:21 AM by: Reis (1)

An idea that was talked of a little bit on this end was gender roles in teens. There's a lot of he-said, she-said type arguments in society. There are expectations of teenage males, as well as expectations of teenage females that multiple sources try to force on us. I feel that this could touch a large range of sub-topics and may make a good overall topic because of that.

Oct 13, 2011 - 10:20 AM by: Danny (1)

One idea for a topic is the media influence on teen self-perception. I think this is an issue today because a lot of what we think is based on what we see and hear around us.

Oct 13, 2011 - 10:19 AM by: Louisa (1)

My topic idea is the use of tracking technology by parents to know thier teenagers location at any given time.

Oct 13, 2011 - 10:18 AM by: Joseph (0)

my idea is how people think that violent video games make teenagers more violent comment with your ideas of my ideas

Hello.Mr Alguire, I am from Lithuania, Kedainiai Atzalynas Gymnasium,it will be nice to work with you in a team. You have got experience in such activities.

Oct 10, 2011 - 11:40 AM by: Ms. Laima (0)

Mr. Alguire: Do your students have the knowledge/ technoglogy to develop a template for our topic? I have been told Athens students have had an excellent track record of develping good templates.

Oct 05, 2011 - 2:07 PM by: joe (0)

I am hoping that our topic ends up being something that affects teens, since that is the age group of students creating this page. This is pretty broad, and includes hundreds of topics, but I think it is important that the site is relevant to our students. It would also be nice if the topic we chose could compare our three countries.

Oct 05, 2011 - 9:09 AM by: Mr. Alguire (1)

As I said before, I am open to all sorts of ideas from the other students, what were you guys thinking for our website theme?

Oct 03, 2011 - 2:54 PM by: joe (0)

For our subject I thought it would be interesting to talk about the zoology of our countries, it seems to be an idea that is unique and something that really interests me. I am still open to all ideas but I think this would be a fun idea to work on. Other things along that line sound great to me, but I think one of the most important is to have a unique idea which hasnt been used much before for this project.

Tim, No worries and thanks for being such a great communicator and partner (you too Laima!  This has been a great GVC team to work with)!  I have uploaded our usa2.html page as our bio.  I left the page numbers at the bottom as I was not sure how you would incorporate it in with the rest of the site, or if you will combine all of the bios into 1 team bio (that would probably be a good idea if it is not too hard to do). I did not write a lot about our school, but instead but a flash viewer at the top that has our class and team pictures, did a quick introduction, and then took quotes from my students about the contest to include.  I also quickly looked through my students' pages - most of them look great, a few of them were slackers and didn't finish everything they should have, so hopefully I already caught and fixed the biggest issues.  Please let me know if I can do anything else to help at this point. I am so sorry to be incommunicado for the last week of the contest.  Good luck and we really appreciate you doing the finalizing of the site.  I do have a backup copy (as of yesterday), so if something goes terribly wrong, we can contact Janet and let her know and then I can reload the parts I have on my return in April.  However, we trust your judgement on finalizing, editing and re-combining pages as needed to make our site functional and interesting. Sincerely,

 Amber HallTim,

Laimamy skype name is dolphin1772

Tim & Laima, My students are now no longer working on the pages.  They did edit every USA page by fixing errors and adding their flash animations.  We did see that a few of their edits from yesterday had been overwritten - not sure if my own students were doing it or if your students were trying to work on some edits as well, but we are out of the site now.  Since my students won't be back in the site again, will you ask your students to make sure to download the most recent pages from the server before making any new edits?  Thanks!  My students mostly added swf files. Things we did not get done/ still had some problems with:

the page number links at the bottom of the articles - we had some trouble with these in the food and music pages

My made-up festivals group, was very inconsistent and did not follow the navigation / naming rules we set up.  Their page names (in the order they should appear) are - howithelps3.html, madeupfestivalhowithelps.html, madeupfestivalhowithelps2.html, help4.html.

o Would you like me to go in and rename these pages to help1, help2, etc?  Or have the navigation already been set up to connect with one of the existing names?

We could not find a gallery folder, and in the images folder we only saw the 6 gal.jpeg pictures that were already loaded into the pages, so we were not able to help switch out the grab bag photos.  Sorry!  I do have a student assistant in tomorrow I could ask to help with that since it is easy, but he does not know web design.  please let me know if you want me to have him work on it.

We did not insert the chickens into any of the pages - we weren't sure where they should go and how you want to mix them up, but we did get them all loaded into the chickens folder.

I am still working on our class bio page.  I will have it uploaded by the end of the day.

Sincerely, Amber Hall

Tim & Laima, Tim - One of my students accidentally deleted the usa.html page you created - can you reload it for us? That page appears to be designed as navigation - do you want me to add our bio and class pictures directly on it, or to link to a 2nd page (usa2.html) and put our class pics and bio there? We will be completing our final additions and edits over the next 3 hours, and then my students will disconnect from the site so they can't potentially mess things up, and I will download a backup copy of the entire site.  I can help out tomorrow (Friday) but then will be leaving on vacation and will be in a place where I do not have access to technology, so I will be out of communication until April 4th. Please let me know what I can do to help out through tomorrow, and I will send you an email with some details about what my students do and do not get done today.   Thank you so much to both of you!  My students have enjoyed working with your students and like the work that everyone has done.  I will be back in touch in April!

Sincerely, Amber Hall

Tim, We are planning on getting back on the site to upload our Flash files in about 1 hour today, but I don't see the navigation in place yet.  Do you need us to wait to finish adding these last elements to the pages?  We would like to at least add our chicken animation into the chicken folder today (I created it) and upload our Flash to the site, even if we don't get it inserted into the pages yet. When we do load our flash, can we put it directly into the pages folder?  If not, where would you like us to put the flash files? Wednesday & Thursday this week will be our last opportunity to work on the site.  We would love to help edit all of the pages in the site, but cannot access the most recent versions of most of them yet.  Please let us know how we can help in this regard.

Sincerely,

Amber Hall

Dear Amber & Tim,

Is there anything else my group can do for the project?

If all the research in entered by then, we can link things over the break, and make a list of missing elements. That gives us a final 2 weeks after March Break for final editing, checking and collaborating on any weak areas.

Can you look at the list below and see if there will be additions or deletions from students for your section and for the helping focus section?

Tim, Our pages are upload (except the bio) and will be untouched for March 10 - 18th.  We will plan on finalizing the week of March 19 - 22, and then we have our Spring Break, so the 22nd will be the last day we work on the site.  We should be able to create the bio next week and hopefully create a few chickens too.   Where in the site should we save the animations?  We will plan on linking them to the site from the 19th - 22nd. Thanks for all of your hard work and skill in keeping us all organized!  I will also have my students log in to twiducate once next week to post some comments/discussions for when your students return.

Sincerely, Amber HallDear Tim & Amber,

Thanks for the information you have shared.

My students have prepared the information about festivals and it is in

http://worldwidesmiles2011.weebly.com/gvcfestivals-in-lithuania.html

Thank you and your students for collaborating and helping us to insert the information into GVC project site. It's a lot of work.

Tomorrow my students will finish the final page "Helping Focus"

Laima

Tim & Laima, We believe we are all done with our site work except for the additions of animations, and setting up the linking from the topic page to the references/citations page - we were not sure where to place the link on the page.  All of my students created their reference pages with 1 page per subtopic team using this naming structure - suptopicname_citation.html.   Is there anything else we can help the team with?  Are your students designing the navigation? We also did not add anything to the bottom section of the page template, as that appears to be in the css code.

On our site map, I have attached a final list of the pages my students have to add to the site.  There were a few changes from the list you sent in email.  This list shows the main page to link to (first one listed), and sub pages of the category (are we able to add this into the navigation?)  My students have revised their pages and believe they are in final form except for the animation they want to add (I have not had a chance to check the pages yet myself). My students are creating animations to add to their pages using Flash. Will this be ok?  Is there any need for animation on the home page or the other pages in the site that my students can help build?  Their skills are very basic, but what we would be happy to help. Sincerely, Amber Hall

Tim,

Laima - any format you make content in is fine.I will continue adding information into http://worldwidesmiles2011.weebly.com/. As far as I understand you can take the files from this site and add the innformation into GVC site.We have done the christmas eve dinner one, and I have taken a look at the great work you and your students have done on the worldwidesmiles site. Can you add credits / web links for where the content of each page came from?Tim, we added the information where the text was taken from or it was created by the students, every photo has a credit. Maybe we should do it in a different way? Also if you need images to go with your content maybe we should insert the information and  photos which go to it  in  separate pages ,maybe request to Amber or my Students a list of specific drawings or photographs that you need created what do you mean?, maybe we can help.

1. My students are thick into making content now. I will upload what they have this weekend. Amber - we need to sync our sites. Can you upload all current progress on Friday for me? I will download it on our side, make some changes to links etc, and reupload it, then on Monday you can download it again to your local site?  This way my students can see what you have, we can start seeing the entire site coming together online.

2. Laima - any format you make content in is fine. We have done the christmas eve dinner one, and I have taken a look at the great work you and your students have done on the worldwidesmiles site. Can you add credits / web links for where the

3. Helping focus - Our plan here as I understand it is to make up a festival that we think should exist, which targets the helping focus aspect of the contest. Amber I was wondering if your studnets could come up with a first draft for this, and then we could edit and revise it on our end? Let me know if you think this is feasible.

4. Header Images - Amber we have been creating original photograph headers for each page, so that each festival has at least 2 unique student created images of good quality, and sized identically. Do you want us to make some headers for your pages as well?

5. Muli-page articles. Amber - you asked and I never got back to you I'm sorry. If your students have multiple pages for their festivals, then the links below the news article can be altered. If they only have 1 page for their festival they should delete that section of code. To edit it for multiple pages: use code view. Each number that is linked (every one except the current page you are on) should appear like <a href =....>#</a> and the current page number should look like <span>#</span>. If you need to add a back arrow the code is <a href = "....">&laquo</a> and the code for a forward arrow is the same except with raquo.

I think the project is coming together nicely. I really want to sync things this weekend so that we can start linking, and so our students can all see the progress. Let me know if this is a go!

Final note: I would like to skype with students - what times do you meet next week? It may be difficult to align. Our class meets for 1 hour at 1:18 - 2:18 Eastern St. Time next week.

Cheers,

Tim Alguire

Thanks Tim!  I am having a hard time following conversations in Twiducate, so please feel free to directly email me any work I can have my students do to improve the overall site and fill any content gaps we see.  I do have a team of students working on making a Helping festival.  Also, we named our pages according to the topic, but can rename if there is any overlap.   I did not have my students work on any linking yet, as I assume will have a system for the entire site.   I also did not have them fill in the credits yet - are we having students put their names on pages they work on, or just put the schools that contribute to each page? Next week I will have my students start learning flash and working on some animations, so let us know if there is anything we can do to help what you have already started.

I hope your meetings go well tomorrow!

Sincerely, Amber HallTim & Laima,

My students have started loading rough drafts of some pages, and have started linking page to the index just for site mapping purposes - we understand that these links will not remain in the main site.

My students will be in communication through Twiducate again on Thursday.  If you get a chance to look at the pages, please let us know what you think.  We are having some trouble with the images at the top of the page and the text - the images that are smaller than the span are being duplicated, and the text is moving behind the images.

Sincerely, Amber Hall

Etc….. communication was never an issue with this group!

Sincerely,

The GVC1114 Team.
