4 WIRE ROPE
In our modern ropery , wire rope is produced from 1mm to60mm diameter in a wide range of constructions. These varyfrom 3 wires to 41 wires in both galvanized and bright.
The large diameter wire ropes are used in a wide range ofindustries such as logging, mining, heavy haulage, construction, bridge building and general engineering. Thesmall diameter ropes are used for boat winches, garage doors etc.
All wire ropes produced are manufactured and tested to theappropriate standard. A sample length of each rope is testedto destruction in our TELARC certified test bed.
1 ......This machine converts individual wiresinto a strand. During manufacture each strandis checked for diameter and lay length priorto it being closed into the finished wire rope.
2 ......The closing machine lays the previouslymade strands over a core to make the finished wirerope. Once the production run is completed adestruction test is made and a certificate issuedshowing the actual breaking load.
3 ...... 1,000 tonne swage press in ourAuckland operation. Each branchthroughout New Zealand of fers a fullservice, cutting to length, mechanical andhand splicing and the fitting of varioussockets and attachments.
Mechanical Splice with Thimble4 ......150 tonne Rotary Swaging Machineproduces this specialised wire rope for thelogging and fishing industries.

WIRE ROPE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION
Wire ropes are composed of independent parts - wires, strands and cores - that interact with each other duringservice.Wire rope engineers design those parts in different steel grades, finishes and a variety of constructions to attain thebest balance of strength, abrasion resistance, crush resistance, bending fatigue resistance and corrosion resistancefor each application. To select the best wire rope for each application, one must know the required performance characteristics for thejob and enough about wire rope design to select the optimum combination of wire rope properties. The following information is provided as a basic guide. Our expert in house staff and field service specialists areavailable to provide more specific recommendations.
The three attributes of a wire rope to consider are:(1) Strength.(2) Flexibility.(3) Robustness. In all dynamic rope applications (as opposed to static applications such as guy wires etc.) the choice is invariablya compromise.Strength can be increased by increasing the diameter of the wire rope and/or increasing the tensile strength of theindividual wires and/or increasing the cross sectional steel content (by decreasing the air voids between the wires)and/or using a steel core construction.Flexibility can be increased by using more wires of a smaller diameter and/or decreasing the tensile strength of theindividual wires and/or using a fibre core.Robustness, or resistance to physical damage, can be increased by using fewer wires of a lar ger diameter and/orusing a steel core and/or by increasing the steel area exposed to sources of external damage. Coatings such asgalvanizing or others can be applied to protect against corrosion. In almost all cases improving one attribute distracts from another. In addition the wire rope’s workplace is rarelyideal. Apart from the environment (dirt, dust, moisture and chemicals), the equipment to which the rope is fitted israrely ideal and another set of compromises must be decided on. For example all wire rope suffers from being bentand the smaller the bend radius the shorter the rope life. For a 26mm wire rope to escape bend fatigue the winchdrum or block sheaves over which it runs would need a minimum diameter of over 1.5 metres. This is clearlyimpractical in many applications, and unnecessary if bend fatigue does not cause the ultimate demise of the rope.
TERMINOLOGYWire rope consists of a number of strands laid up usually over a central core. Each strand is made from anumber of individual wires.

ESCO grew up with the timber industry. From the days of steam logging, ESCOmainline rigging has been bringing inthe logs.As machinery evolved, so has ESCO’shardware. Today’s mainline assembliesare engineered to handle today’s loggingneeds.Towers are faster to set up and dismantlewith ESCO’s guy line hardware. As long as timber is being harvested inrugged terrain with mainlines, ESCOwill be on the job with durable productsthat make the work faster and easier.

ESCO’s machined wedge-type ferrules let you make up or repair chokers and winchlines in minutes: No moltensocket metal or swaging equipment is required. Ferrules are made of high strength alloy steel which resistssplitting or cracking under severe loads. The two-piece wedges are rifled to provide more gripping surface onthe wire rope strands for greater holding power.
WARNINGDo not use wedge-typeferrules for overheadlifting. Do not exceedthe working load limitsstated by the wire ropemanufacturer
Installation is Fast and Easy
1. Insert cable through the ferrule and spread thestrands to insert wedge halves over the core of thewire rope.
2. Position individual strands into proper groovesaround the wedge halves and tap wedges until theyare flush with the strand ends.
3. Slide the ferrule backover the wedge and drivethe wedge into the ferrulewith a hammer and shortpipe which fits inside thestrands and over the core.
Warning! Strandsshould project above thewedge about 1/4” andshould not finish belowthe end of the wedge.
4. Installation is complete. The first load willseat the cable and wedge securely in theferrule.

STEELCookes pioneered the N. Z. wear resistant steel plate market in the early 70’ s establishing an exclusive marketing anddistribution arrangement with Ford Steel Company and their Wearalloy brand of plate.Wearalloy AR360, AR450, AR500, AR550 and now Wearalloy Xtreme are heat treated, quenched and tempered, abrasionresistant alloy steel plates which provide a cost ef fective solution to high wear and impact applications in a wide range ofindustries with particular success in quarrying, mining and timber processing.WEARALLOY 450The market leader on performance and versatility is Wearalloy 450 introduced in the mid 80’s which provides excellent wearresistance whilst still offering good weldability and formability.Bending:The minimum recommended bending radius is 3 - 4 times the plate thickness providing the correct breakpress tooling is usedat 90° to the grain direction and all rough edges are ground off prior to bending.Welding:Use low hydrogen electrodes such as E70XX, E80XX, E90XX, E100XX or flux cored MIG wire such as E71T1.SERVICES PROVIDED• Computerised profile cutting• Drilling - countersunk - plow bolt - counter bored - straight holes• Forming service• Machining• Full fabrication and repair serviceStock Thicknesses:1/8” (3mm) through to and including 3” (76.2mm)Many have tried to copy the very successful Wearalloy brand of product and we are aware that several suppliers claim theycan supply Wearalloy, but unless it has been supplied through Cookes it is not the genuine Wearalloy branded product and isgenerally an inferior alternative, so if anybody other than Cookes claim to be supplying Wearalloy, please question thesource.
