Parts Involved In Locomotion Of Grasshopper.Grasshoppers have 3 pairs of legs

Characteristics of Legs It is long and muscular.Has antagonistic muscles. The flexor and extensor muscles are attached to the interior surface of the exoskeleton.Flexors are muscles that bend a joint while extensors straightens it.WalkingTo walk, a grasshopper uses 2 legs to support its body off the ground while the other 2 legs move together to make successive steps. Heres a example of how grasshopper walks :-D IT DOES NOT USE ITS REAR LEGS!

HOPPING

Knowing the charateristics of rear legs.Extensor muscle and flexor muscle are used to in the mechanism of hopping. How Grass JumpsFlexor Muscle = ContractExtensor Muscle = RelaxLegs Fully Flexed.Legs Forms A Z Shape.Flexor Muscle = RelaxExtensor Muscle = ContractHind legs extends backwards. For propelling in the air.Factors that effect the efficiency of its jumpsThe magnitude of the force.. Low Force = Short distance. High Force = Far distance.Time to build the force. If the thrust builds up too slowly, the legs will extend before the thrust reaches its maximum. Once the grasshopper is standing on tip-toe, it can't thrust against the ground any more.Try this: flex your arm so that your hand is close to your shoulderWhile arm is flexed, place palm ofhand on a wallPush the wall with your hand, extending your armFeel the push backwards? That show a grasshopper jumps.Simple ExampleShort Video
