LOCKDOWNS have not altered the course of thecoronavirus pandemic but have devastated theglobal economy, a study by JP Morgan has claimed.

A paper by Marko Kolanovic, a strategist at theinvestment bank, argued that governments were"spooked" into imposing lockdowns that were "late"or "inefficient".

Countries around the world introduced lockdownmeasures as the number of coronavirus cases grew inthe opening months of this year, and have seeninfection rates fall significantly since.
Kolanovic claimed that numbers had declinedbecause the virus "likely has its own dynamics" thatare "unrelated to often inconsistent lockdownmeasures".
He cites as evidence a number of places whoseinfection rates, or "R" values, have continued to falldespite restrictions being lifted.

following the reopening of schools and shoppingcentres near the end of last month.
As of May 18, its R value was estimated to be 0.6,compared to 0.7 on May 7.
An R value of one or greater indicates that thespread of the virus through a population isaccelerating.
Germany has also eased measures and has seen its Rvalue remain below 1.
The study includes graphs showing numerous othercountries that have followed a similar pattern sinceeasing their own lockdowns.
Partial lockdowns as well as social distancingguidelines remain in place in most countries, andGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Europecould see a second wave of the virus if restrictionsare lifted too quickly.
'ECONOMIC DEVASTATION'Kolanovic also expressed concern about theeconomic fallout from the lockdowns.
"Unlike rigorous testing of new drugs, lockdownswere administered with little consideration that theymight not only cause economic devastation butpotentially more deaths than Covid-19 itself," heclaimed.
"At the same time, millions of livelihoods were beingdestroyed."

governments to pass significant bailout packages tohelp workers and businesses.
Figures today showed the UK's public sector netborrowing rose to £62.1 billion in April, £51.1 billionmore than in the same month last year.
Governments have warned that some restrictions onmovement as well as social distancing measures willlikely need to remain in place until a vaccine for thevirus has been developed.
