Lockdown Programme Block 3 - Reception
Number, words and numerals Counting objects / actions
Skills in Block 3:
Subitising Adding SubtractingComparing Composition
See the
introduction
presentation in
Block 1 for more
details on the
areas of number
covered in
Brainy Maths
Tips for working through Block 3:
Start with the first game in
session 1. If possible, spend
up to 30 minutes playing the
three games in this session
OR split the session up and
play the games at different
times.
If your child particularly enjoys a
game, keep revisiting at different
times during the week and add extra
challenge if possible.
If your child is finding an area of number difficult, e.g.
counting sets of objects, provide as much practice with
this skill as possible and use games from Block 1 and 2
which address this.
Choose the numbers you play with carefully – SEE NEXT SLIDE
Go back to games from last week
that your child enjoyed playing
ALSO ones they found tricky but
were starting to get the hang of.
Choose numbers carefully:
Do not feel like you have to rush to move on to bigger numbers.
A solid grasp of numbers 1 – 10 will provide an excellent foundation for your child to base their future maths on.
Easier: If your child is struggling to recognise numbers up to 5, limit your dice to a 6 sided dice either with numbers or dots
Harder: If your child is confident with numbers up to 10, use two six sided dice and have children add up the dots or use a 0 – 9 dice.
Easier: If playing a game with playing cards, take out the cards over 5 and slowly introduce the larger numbers as your child builds up confidence.
Tips for using different dice
Dot dice 1 – 6 to practice:
Subitising, recognising
dice patterns & counting
Number dice 1 – 6 for
practice with number
recognition to 6.
Two dot dice to practice counting how many
altogether.
2 number dice for practice with adding two numbers together
0 – 9 dice for number
recognition to 9 and to
reinforce understanding of 0.
Alternate the dice you are using depending on the skill you want your child to work on
Useful Resources
for Block 3:
Objects to count
e.g. buttons
Playing cards (if possible
change the Ace cards to
1 using sticky labels)
A variety of dice: 1 – 6
dot dice; 1 – 6 number
dice; 0 – 9 number dice
Instruments or
anything to shake /
bang e.g. pan and
wooden spoon
Dominoes
Session 1 Games
Pumpkin Pie
Dice Grid Game
Pumpkin Pie
Warm Up: Start at 0 and take it in turns to say the next number. Once 20 is reached (or whatever you choose the target number to be, the next player says pumpkin and the next player pie – whoever says pie is out!
Game variations: Backwards from 20; Roll 2 dice and count up to the total; Count in steps of 2 to 20 / 5 to 50 / 10 to 100
Tip: Let children choose the pie filling or instead of pie change to ice cream and let them choose the flavour
Resources: 4 x 3 number grids,
1 – 6, dice, counters,
Dice Grid Game
Each player has a 4 x 3 grid
consisting of numbers 1 – 6
(see picture). Take turns to
roll the dice and cover the
number rolled with a
counter. Can be played with
adult and child having a grid
and rolling their own dice to
see who can cover all of their
numbers first or can be
played by adult and child
sharing a grid and covering
numbers with a chosen
coloured counter with the
winner being the player with
the most numbers covered
after a set time.
1 3 4 3
5 2 5 6
2 4 6 1
Easier: Use a 3 x 2 grid and only have the numbers 1 – 6 once; Put numbers in order in the grid.
Session 2 Games
What’s The Time Mr Wolf?
Play Your Cards Right – UNO
What’s The Time
Mr Wolf?
Game 1: Adult stands at a
distance from the child. When
your child asks ‘What’s the
time…’ say a time and hold up
a number card. Your child takes
the correct number of steps and
counts aloud as they go. They
then ask the question again. If
Mr Wolf calls out “Dinner
time!” then your child runs back
to the beginning.
Challenge: Extend your child by sometimes saying a time that does not match the number cards being held up. If they don’t match, your child has to perform an agreed action e.g. freeze / stand on one leg / sit on the ground.
Game 2: After playing a few times,
introduce a new rule that if the wolf
calls out 12 o’ clock, your child has to
stand on one leg instead of moving.
When your child is ready, introduce a
different rule for a different number
after a few times of playing the 12 o’
clock rule.
Tip: If you are short of space, ask your child to do the correct number of jumps instead of taking steps and when you call our ‘Dinner Time’ ask them to freeze rather than run back.
Resources: Number
cards to show the time
Play Your Cards Right – UNO
Resources: Pack of playing cards
Ask your child to deal each player 10 cards. Include the joker in the pack and explain that the joker can be any number / pattern that they like.
Put one card face up in the middle. First player can either match the number or the pattern on the card. If they can’t play then they pick up an extra card. The aim of the game is to be the first player to finish all of your cards.
Easier: Play with only 5 cards each
Challenge: Make up rules for the Jack, Queen and King cards e.g. Jack pick up an extra card; Queen change the pattern; King next player misses a go
Session 3 Games
Dominoes – Composition
Buttons, Beads, Counters & Cubes: Subtraction
Dominoes – Composition
Lay out number cards 1 – 12.
Ask your child to pick a domino and count how many
dots there are altogether. Then place it on the correct
number card.
Help your child to repeat with more dominoes.
Discuss the number cards that have different dominoes
on them.
Resources: Dominoes, cards 1 – 12 (either make these or use playing cards and either assign 11 to Jack and 12 to Queen or write 11 and 12 on separate pieces of paper)
Challenge: Write addition sums to go with each domino
Easier: Take out dominoes and cards over 10
Buttons, Beads, Blocks & Counters:
Subtracting
Resources: Objects to count, 2 hoops / bowls or plates to put objects into, dice
Tip: Use different dice depending on whether your child needs practice with number recognition or subitising.
Each player starts with 20 objects in a hoop and a dice each.
Players race each other to roll their dice and take out the correct number of objects from their hoop.
The first player to have an empty hoop wins.
