Has Easter snuck up on you this year? Do you find yourself thinking “I can’t

believe Easter is next week!”? If we think that we’re unprepared, just think

about the disciples! Burned into their memories was the horror of the cruci-

fixion—Jesus was dead. They had seen him killed and knew where he was

buried. So that Sunday found them hiding in a room (Jn. 20:19) or heading

home in despondency (Lk. 24:13). Even the women, whose love and courage

propelled them to the tomb, went there to anoint a corpse (Mk. 16:1), not

find the Risen Lord.

What those faithful women found that Easter Sunday morning was so unex-

pected that the Bible tells us that their initial feeling was fright (Lk. 24:5) and

that their testimony was so amazing that the news so incredible that the disci-

ples still didn’t know what to think (see Lk. 24:22-24). These reactions conclu-

sively answer the objection sometimes raised against the truth of the resur-

rection. Some accuse the disciples of mass hallucination, seeing the resurrec-

tion as some kind of wish-fulfillment; that is, the disciples wanted so much to

believe that Jesus rose from the dead that they imagined the whole thing.

But here Scripture gives us the unflattering truth that the disciples were not

expecting Jesus to rise from the dead that Sunday morning! But the grave is

empty, Jesus is alive, He is risen!

But here is another surprise: there is no body, but the tomb is not quite emp-

ty either! I’m not talking about the angels who appeared and spoke to the

women but did not remain. John records in his gospel account (Jn. 20:3-9)

that he outraced Peter to the gravesite and what they saw compelled them to

believe, even though they didn’t fully understand. What was it that was left

behind? The grave clothes! There was no body and they didn’t see Jesus yet,

but they did see the strips of linen that his body had been wrapped in lying

there undisturbed, and the burial cloth that had been around his head “folded

up by itself, separate from the linen” (v. 7). Here again we have a compelling

answer to a common objection. Some will challenge the reality of the resur-

rection by suggesting that grave robbers stole the body or that the religious

leaders hid it. This argument falls apart when the burial cloth is found;

it is inconceivable that whoever might have wanted to steal the body

would have even been able to leave those strips of linen undisturbed

or taken time to fold the cloth and lay it separate from the linen. This

evidence was enough to, as Dr. James Boice puts it, “quicken faith in

John” (The Christ of the Empty Tomb, 83). Praise the Lord!

These believers were undoubtedly surprised, but what a blessed sur-

prise it was! Jesus Christ is Risen! Hallelujah!

That wondrous truth is just as true today as it was that first Easter

morning—He’s alive! But I wonder if we expect anything surprising to

happen to us as we encounter the Living Savior? The disciples’ lives

were transformed, women and men alike. The people around them

knew something had changed, something was different. Another evi-

dence of the truth of the resurrection is how surprisingly different the

disciples were after Jesus appeared to them, blessed them, commis-

sioned them, and sent His Spirit upon them! As we see in Acts, Peter,

who had denied his Lord and had hidden in a locked room after Jesus’

death, now stands boldly before all and proclaims that God raised Je-

sus from the dead (Acts 2:24 & 32; 3:15; 4:10; 5:30).

As you prepare to celebrate Easter and look ahead to work and wor-

ship after Easter Sunday, Pray that God would bless you with (a sur-

prisingly) fresh joy in the truth that your Savior Lives! Do you want

your heart to be changed by the Christ who rose from the dead? Be-

cause He lives, we have new life and new hope and good news to

share with others! Will your life be characterized by repentance and

reconciliation and renewed zeal for God’s work?

Have a blessed Easter,

Pastor Milligan

P.S. May the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and its wonder-

ful implications be apparent to all who worship with us this Easter sea-

son as we lift up our eyes to heaven and see the Lamb of God who was

slain standing in the center of the throne and those around singing a

new song: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and

wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and

praise!” (Rev. 5:12)

And may all God’s people say, “Amen.”

Worship Matters

There are many different opinions about worship, in the coming months we will look at what we do

and why we worship this particular way. We were created to worship God, to declare or ascribe to

Him “the worth of which he is worthy.”* We were made in His image to reflect His glory and sing His

praise! As we confess with the Westminster Shorter Catechism, “Man’s [humankind’s] chief end

[primary purpose] is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever” (Q.1). Missions and evangelism is so

important to us because we want many, many more people of every culture and place to worship the

One True and Living God.

The Church is a worshipping community; every Sunday God’s people gather in the bond of the Spirit

and a unity of faith and love to worship our Triune God. We meet on the first day of the week as an

abiding testament of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. This corporate dimension of God’s

people gathered is also a testimony to the larger purposes of God; His promise to Abraham was for a

great nation (Gen. 12:2), more than merely a number of individuals. And we, the Church, are the ful-

fillment of that promise, for as Paul says, “if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs

according to promise” (Gal. 3:29 ESV).

We are the body of Christ, called to love God with everything we are and have and commanded to

love one another as Christ has loved us. And our regular worship services are one primary way to

express and strengthen that love. In Sunday morning worship we gather and God speaks to us

through His Word and we respond to Him in faith and obedience. We sing to Him the praises due His

name and build up one another as we confess our common faith as well as our sin; we are encour-

aged and humbled as we declare the truth of who God is and what He has done for us and remind

ourselves of who we are and who God calls us to be. All of this casts us on Christ, “the Author and

Perfecter of our faith” (Heb. 12:2 NIV).

This topic is so important that we will continue talking about it. Worship matters. This is how Peter

writes about the Church: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people

belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his

wonderful light” (1 Pt. 2:9 NIV). May God help us as we declare His praise!

MISSION POSSIBLE March – April, 2016

Mike and Chrissy Cosner

Serving with MTW in Belize

Ministry updates and prayer requests

There's been lots of exciting movement this year so far,

which has been a bit overwhelming. We remain confident

that God will strengthen and equip us for the opportuni-

ties ahead. Here are some ways that He has been working

in Belize:

Youth Ministry- Mike met with several youth lead-

ers at the Patchakan church and helped them evaluate

their current ministry efforts, and ask questions about its

future direction. He and Risse also had the opportunity to

attend a scavenger hunt activity with the youth of the San

Pablo church, and encourage the youth workers there.

Please pray for their continued efforts to reach out to the

young people of Belize and capture their hearts for Jesus.

Short Term Teams- This season of teams will be

crazy busy. We have more than twice as many teams as

last year, which is exciting and terrifying!! A few week-

ends ago, several team leaders from the States were here

to get an advanced look at their projects and meet with

local church leaders. It was an encouraging weekend of

dreaming what ministry together may look like this sum-

mer. Right now, there is an RUF group up north serving at

the Cristo Rey church during their spring break, and next

weekend a high school group from Colorado will be here

to serve at Unity. Please pray for all the details in these

trips (travel, lodging, meals, health, ministry preparations,

etc.) and pray for great impact in the lives of locals and

the trip participants.

Community- We've had the opportunity to serve

our friends and neighbors this month in various ways:

feeding kids, visiting our Karla who just became a mom-

my, babysitting for the weekend while another mom had

baby #4, taking illegal immigrants to the capital to work

on their paperwork, assisting a visiting tourist from Ohio

with his month long vacation, trying to keep peace and

calm when our alcoholic friend showed up to church sev-

eral weeks in a row, causing major disturbances. We really

feel settled in our neighborhood and like we're a part of

this community, even though we were victims of vandal-

ism a few weeks ago. Please pray we can be beacons of

grace and hope and love to our neighbors and friends.

Mike continues with his prison visits, and recently,

through a providential meeting and ride offered to a

stranger, Mike has gained further access into the prison.

He is praying through what a consistent ministry would

look like there, and how God is asking him to serve the

inmates.

Transition- Mike had a strategic meeting with our

Regional Director, Rich Wolfe, and with Garry Chambers,

our country director and team leader, to discuss the fu-

ture of work here in Belize. Mike will officially become the

team leader here in April, as Garry transitions to his re-

gional role based in Miami. Please pray for these transi-

tions to go smoothly, and be covered in grace. Pray for

Mike to strengthen his role and relationship with the Pres-

bytery in the coming months.

Growth- We are actively recruiting new missionaries

to join our team. There are great needs here, and just not

enough people to help. We are currently looking for a full

time couple/family to assist with running short term

teams, and another couple/family to serve as a pastoral

assistant up north. We have big dreams and plans for min-

istry here, and we are praying that God sends the right

folks to join our team. Pray for wisdom and direction in

this area.

Leadership- Mike and Ernest have put together a

plan to strengthen church membership and offer a course

for those who would like to join our church family. Pray

that as families commit to the church that they will begin

serving the people, and leaders can be identified for fu-

Page 5: Loch Raven Press: March/April 2016

ture roles as deacons and elders. Our men’s and wom-

en’s Bible study groups are well attended and going

great. Pray that these times of fellowship and study will

birth future leaders for our church. Pray for Mike as he

begins meeting with a young man for discipleship and

leadership training.

Family- Homeschooling is going well, although we

are still behind because of our fall trip to the States.

Pray for us as we struggle to keep up and catch up. Our

son Keenan recently got a job and has been working

steadily. We are thankful for that opportunity for him,

and grateful that we are in communication with him for

the time being. The job is a new schedule and structure

that he isn't used to, which causes him great stress and

anxiety. Please pray he can manage to cope with the

added pressures of work. He is attending church regu-

larly, and we are hopeful that God is doing a great work

in his heart and life. He will be celebrating his 18th

birthday in just under two weeks, apart from us, which

is very hard for everyone. Keep praying for our broken

family, as it continues to be difficult and sometimes

unbearable, to be separated.

Our travel itinerary in Baltimore:

Wednesday April 13th- Depart Belize City and arrive

at BWI

Saturday April 16th- Memorial service, luncheon,

and funeral for Mike's grandfather

Sunday April 17th- Visit to share with Loch Raven

PCA

Saturday April 23rd- Get together with Chrissy's

extended family

Sunday April 24th- Mike will be preaching at Inver-

ness PCA

Tuesday April 26th- Mike's 39th Birthday

Wednesday April 27th- Return home to Belize

As you can see, we will be busy, but we'd love to get

together with you. Please contact us if you'd like to

schedule a visit during this time. And pray for our trav-

el, productive times sharing about our work, and en-

couraging visits with family and friends.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I wanted to take this time to “officially” introduce myself and provide you with a few fun facts to better get

to know me.

I received my musical training from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. I graduated in May 2003 with both

a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance and a Bachelors of Music in Music Education and in May 2009,

I received my Masters of Music in Music Education. I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts in

Music Education at Boston University. I have two classes, three qualifying exams, and a dissertation to go. I

will be attending my Residency (in Boston) this September. This past October, I finished the Music Founda-

tions Program at the dubspot School for Electronic Music in New York City.

I have been teaching 4th and 5th grade instrumental music in Baltimore County for the past thirteen years. I

currently teach beginning band and strings at Joppa View Elementary School and Seneca Elementary school.

At Joppa View, I also teach two bucket bands, a jazz band, and run an electronic music club. I am looking for-

ward to my new honorary membership in the Seneca Dance Team. I recently produced an EDM track, “Give

it Some Bass” for the dance squad and will be helping with special black light effects.

On the rare occasion that I am not involved in something musical, I can be found with my nose in book, play-

ing Yahtzee, or shopping for my action figure collection. I collect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thundercats,

He-Man, and She-Ra action figures and memorabilia. I also enjoy shopping for a new pair of kicks, usually

Vans, and eating lots of pizza at Ledo’s! If I happen to be in front of the TV, I am probably watching Flip or

Flop or Love It or List It on HGTV.

I am extremely honored that you have chosen me to fill the position of Music Director here at Loch Raven.

We have decided to split the numerous music responsibilities between Cynthia and myself. Cynthia will be

leading the choir, accompanying the worship services on piano, and overseeing the orchestra. I will continue

to lead the praise team, lead Remedy, oversee Special Music, and take care of the numerous administrative

tasks.

My goal is to continue using music to worship God and His Church. Music is a valuable teaching tool. It helps

us memorize words, understand scriptures in today’s language, fosters unity by bringing all of our voices to-

gether, and provides a unique offering of praise to God and His Son, Jesus Christ. I am humbled that you

have chosen me to prepare the musical offerings each Sunday.

caIn His Service,

Melissa Goetschius

Calling All Musicians

Do you play an instrument? Do you sing? Have you

considered contributing your musical gifts to our Worship

Services, but are too scared to ask?

The music ministry would like to extend an invita-

tion to all members of the congregation here at LRPC who

is interested in joining our ranks of musicians.

I would encourage everyone to prayerfully consid-

er if and how God may be leading you to use your special

gift. Music is a ministry and therefore attendance at re-

hearsals and practice outside of rehearsals is expected. Do

not worry if you are not a “professional,” music is about

blessing others, not getting every note correct; however,

we must ensure that we are offering our very best to God

and the people who are hearing the music.

Please place the “Music Interest Form” in the

offering plate if you would like more information or are

interested in contributing your music to our services here

at LRPC.

In His Service,

Melissa ([email protected])

The Everlasting Gospel

"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth,

and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour

of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." (Revelation

14:6-7).

When the Lord Jesus returned to heaven after His resurrection, He left the disciples with the Great Commission to

"preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). Unfortunately, over the centuries, there has developed much

misunderstanding concerning the content of the gospel ("good tidings") and many have preached "another gos-

pel" (Galatians 1:6) which can never save. This false gospel wears many faces, but inevitably, at its heart will be

found the false hope of evolutionary humanism, glorifying man instead of God, worshipping and serving the crea-

ture more than the Creator (Romans 1:25).

We can be sure that the gospel preached in our text is the true gospel--in fact, it is called specifically the everlast-

ing gospel! And its great burden is to call people everywhere back to faith in the one true Creator God, who made

all things in heaven and earth. The Lord Jesus Christ must be accepted, first of all, as God and Creator, before it can

be meaningful to present Him as Savior and Lord. Otherwise, we preach "another gospel" and "another Jesus"--

neither of which are even real!

The true gospel must also present Christ as the sin-bearing, crucified, resurrected Savior (1 Corinthians 15:1-4),

and as the coming King of kings and Lord of lords (Matthew 4:23; Revelation 19:16). But it must first present Him

as omnipotent and offended Creator. Then only, like the angel, do we truly proclaim the everlasting gospel.

Taken from Days of Praise: 03.16.2014. Institute for Creation Research: Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., All scripture is taken from the

KJV. Presented by the Evangelism and Outreach Committee and edited by Chuck Holzman.

Editor’s Note:

Evangelism is to present Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to sinful people, in order that they may come

to put their trust in God through Him, to receive Him as their Savior, and serve Him as their King in the fellowship

of His Church. If we want to define it simply, we could say that New Testament evangelism is communicating the

gospel. Anyone who faithfully relates the essential elements of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ is evangeliz-

ing. This is true whether your scripturally sound words are spoken, written, or recorded, and whether they are

delivered to one person or to a crowd.

FIVE LIES THAT RUIN

RELATIONSHIPS

WRONG BELIEFS PRODUCE WRONG BEHAVIOR

This study examines the five most common lies that ruin relationships with those we love. You'll learn the source of quarreling, how our words wound, how not to make decisions, and why better things don't always make things better. This study is for those serious about deep, meaningful relationships. We will work though the book of James, chapters four, five, and six, using a DVD video study - Led by Chip Ingram who is:

□ Senior Pastor of Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos, CA.

□ Founder and President of Living on the Edge

□ Formerly the President of the Walk Thru the Bible.

The study includes the following Five Lies":

1. “Sensual Pleasure will satisfy My Inner Longings for Happiness.”

Week #1 -- Why We Fight With Those We Love – Read James 4:1-10

2. "If other people would shape up, my life would work out."

3. "Upward Mobile work opportunities are automatically the will 0f God."

4. "My significance & value are measured by the things I possess."

"The grass is greener on the other side of the fence."
