FEES: Course fees include instruction, materials, continuing education credits, refreshments, lunch, and a $25 nonrefundable administrative fee. Outside food items, including food from home, may not be consumed at the Pyle Center.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: To ensure your place in a class, register as early as possible by calling 608-262-2451 or visiting continuingstudies.wisc.edu/certificates/substance-use-disorders-program.
CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event of bad weather or other emergencies, call 608-263-4432 or visit continuingstudies.wisc.edu/policies-related-information to learn whether a Continuing Studies program or class has been canceled. If you are unable to attend or arrange for a substitute, you may obtain a refund, minus the $25 administrative fee, by contacting our registration department at least three business days before the program starts. If you cancel three or fewer business days before the program starts, or do not attend, you are responsible for the entire fee. To cancel or arrange for a substitute, call 800-725-9692.

Psychologists: UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies is
approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies maintains responsibility for the program and its content.
Social workers: UW–Madison Continuing Studies (provider #1042) is approved as a provider for
social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. UW–Madison Division Continuing Studies maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 4/27/2016-4/27/2019. Refer to program description for number of CE hours. Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota boards of social work recognize ACE programs.

CERTIFICATE CLASSESFUNDAMENTALS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ADDICTION

Learn the basics of substance use disorders and treatment. Examine the neuroscience of addiction, stages of withdrawal, diagnostic and placement criteria, substances of abuse, triggers, and management of cravings.
Learning objectives:• Define addiction using the DSM-5
and ASAM criteria.• Review placement and specifying criteria.• Demonstrate clinical charting methods.• Identify substances of abuse and
biopsychosocial presentations of substance use.
• Discuss the disease model of addiction and the relationship between addiction and survival.
• Identify areas of the brain that make up the pleasure-reward system and how this system influences addictive behaviors.
• Define Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) and identify the signs and symptoms.
• Identify triggers and how best to manage cravings.
The Substance Use Disorders Certificate Program is a series of six single-day courses that supplement your professional clinical training and strengthen your knowledge of substance abuse issues and treatment practices.
We recommend taking the six classes in sequence. You may also attend individual classes without working toward the certificate.
CERTIFICATE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS1. Complete the following certificate classes
within 30 months: • Fundamentals of Substance Abuse and Addiction • Diverse Populations and Substance Use Challenges • Resources and Substance Use Trends • Family Dynamics, Codependency, Healthy Boundaries, and Addiction • Relapse Prevention and Recovery • Addiction Treatment Skills Workshop
2. Complete and pass the quiz given at the end of each class with a grade of at least 80%.
3. Write a three-page paper that meets instructional guidelines when you’ve completed all six classes. The paper will receive a grade of pass, fail, or incomplete. Your grade must be a pass to receive the Substance Use Disorders Program certificate of completion.

Explore treatment topics, techniques, and recovery management tools that can help you succeed when assisting people with substance use disorders. You’ll participate in a number of experiential activities that help you build important skills.
Learning objectives:• Gain clinical and experiential skills for
helping those in recovery.• Identify and practice mindfulness techniques
and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills.• Practice individual and group therapy
techniques.
YOUR INSTRUCTORSAMY ANDERSON (BSW, MS, LPC, CSAC) previously worked at Rogers Memorial Hospital, where she specialized in addiction treatment. She is currently the program director for mental health and substance use disorders programming in UW–Madison’s Division of Continuing Studies.
TIM BAUTCH (MA, LPC, CSAC, ICS) Tim is a Clinical Director at Connections Counseling in Madison. He has worked in the field of substance abuse/mental health for 16+ years in inpatient, outpatient, residential, and correctional settings.
SUZANNA WATERS CASTILLO (PhD) directs programming relating to aging and long-term care in UW–Madison’s Division of Continuing Studies. She is recognized regionally and nationally as a leader in professional development in geriatric mental health care.
ABIGAIL CZARNECKI (BS, RN) is a psychiatric registered nurse at Rogers Memorial Hospital. She specializes in the treatment of adults and adolescents with substance abuse disorders as well as co-occurring mental health issues. She started at Rogers in 2009 as a behavioral specialist.
MARIA HANSON (JD, CPS, PRC) is a peer support specialist coordinator for the consumer involvement program at the Mendota Mental Health Institute, part of the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
SAMANTHA ST. LOUIS (MS, LPC, CSAC) works as a counselor for Aurora Psychiatric Hospital. She previously specialized in addiction treatment at Rogers Memorial Hospital and counseled at Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services.
