“Locations” game

Back ground

The game at hand was invented in the Sichone house hold children in the late nineteen seventies and

early eighties. The idea was birthed as a result of interest in global issues. They (Sichone kids) all

took a subject called social studies at primary school and wanted a way to master locations, timezones, activities and interpretations of maps. Further, the interest in astronomy generated by the such

science fiction movies like Space force 1999 and the Star trek exploit series burned within their

bones as they went about to create this game. As a result of those heart warming sessions, the

Sichones developed an unmatched skill in atlas handling and went places mentally. It is hoped the

same will be your experience.

Objective

The objective of this game is three fold:

1. Encourage people to know and master their atlases.

2. To cultivate a healthy interest in this global village.

3. Increase interest in Geography and thereby foster the green revolution

Requirements

1. A global atlas each for each participant

2. A flip chart board.

3. A marker

4. Uniform atlases (Minimum of two)

5. Rule

6. Pencil

Rules

1. A minimum of two players can play the game.

2. An independent umpire will be engaged.

3. An independent point keeper will be required.

4. The first to find the location of a town/place or activity will win that round

5. A maximum of 1.5 minutes will be allowed for each round.

6. Participants only open their atlases when the umpire indicates. The umpire will call out a location

for instance and allow the participants to frantically look for the place by giving the bearings of the

place. Another set of questions will centre on the economic and social activities of various places of

the world. An example of a question will be “Find a place called “TIMBUKTU”! Or “SAHARA

DESERT”. Another would be “Find a place where the pygmies live”. The participants will quickly

flip their atlases and give the answer. The first to do so claims the point.

7. The one who finds the place raises the hand and shouts the answer giving the exact bearing of the

location. For example “Timbuktu is …* north and …* west”

8. A participant will be disqualified if found flouting the game rules such as opening the atlas before

time, copying etc

9. Only the provided atlas will be used during the game. Participants may bring along a pen and rule.

10. Each set of questions lasts for 15 minutes and then recommences.11. The total number of questions is dependant up on the organizers.
