AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIV IL ENGINEERS CONTINUING EDUCATION

Design anD strengthening of shallow founDations for Conventional anD Pre-engineereD BuilDings

Summary Outline

PURPOSE AND BACkGROUND

This practical seminar provides a broad overview of the issues encountered by foundation designers. It starts with a brief discussion of soil types and a primer on relevant geotechnical topics. You will learn how to determine soil-bearing capacities by both the conventional exploration and analysis methods and by approximate quick field testing. The differences in behavior of foundations placed on sand and clay are presented. The seminar reviews the basics of wall and column footing design using longhand calculations, reference tables, and software. Comfortable with the basics, participants will follow several step-by-step design examples for complex foundations, including combined, canti-lever, and eccentric column footings. The discussion proceeds to the unique challenges of designing foundations for pre-engineered metal buildings, including frame-based and Quonset hut varieties. After an overview of special challenges facing the designers of these structures, the discussion ex-plains the process of estimating column reactions and methods of resisting horizontal forces and uplift on their foundations. The nuts-and-bolts of shear and tension transfer from the column base to the foundation are explained. The complexities of designing tie rods, hairpins, formless footings, downturned slabs, and moment-resisting foundations are explained and illustrated in several design examples. An overview of challenges facing those designing foundations on difficult soils follows. You will learn how to deal with foundations on rock, poor, corrosive, or expansive soils, and with foundations in the areas with deep frost lines. An in-depth discussion of various methods of repair and strengthening foundations, including chemical grouting, jet grouting, micropiles, and helical piers concludes the seminar.

SEMINAR BENEfITS

– Learn how to design various kinds of shallow foundations, including combined, cantilever, and eccentric column footings, and work through many step-by-step design examples

– Discover how to use quick field testing to approximately establish soil bearing capacity– Discuss various methods of resisting horizontal forces on metal-building foundations, including

tie rods, hairpins, and moment-resisting foundations. Learn the dos and don’ts of their design– Examine the latest methods of strengthening shallow foundations, such as chemical grouting,

jet grouting, micropiles, and helical piers– Learn how to estimate column reactions for pre-engineered buildings before the manufacturer

is even selected– Explore the issues of transferring the column reactions from the base plates to the foundations

and learn why some metal building manufacturers’ typical details may require modification. Learn how to select minimum column pier size to avoid anchor bolt failure

– Discover how to avoid pitfalls in designing formless footings and downturned slabs– Study the proven methods of constructing shallow foundations on rock, poor soils, or in areas

with deep frost lines– Examine the merits of designing of fixed-base columns and learn what problems they present

for the foundation designer– Find out how the latest changes in the building codes complicate the design of anchor bolts for

pre-engineered buildings and what changes in the metal superstructure may be needed to meet the new code provisions

LEARNING OUTCOMES

– Learn practical methods of designing various types of pre-engineered building foundations– Know the methods of estimating column reactions for pre-engineered buildings– Become familiar with practical procedures for designing wall, column, combined and

cantilevered footings– Find out how to repair and strengthen shallow foundations

ASSESSMENT Of LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students’ achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed through a series of problem-solving design exercises, class discussion following the presentation of each major topic, and through short case studies.

SPECIAL fEATURES

Each participant will receive a copy of Alexander Newman’s book Metal Building Systems: Design and Specifications, 2nd edition, a $90 value.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Structural and civil engineers, facility managers, building officials, and competent contractors seek-ing to broaden their knowledge of foundation design, construction, and renovation methods. While the discussion topics are technical in nature, those who are not engineers will not be overwhelmed because the instruction is kept to an enjoyable and easy-to-understand level.

SEMINAR INSTRUCTOR

alexander newman, p.e., F.asCe, is a forensic and structural consultant in Needham, Massa-chusetts. During more than 30 years of professional practice, Mr. Newman has been involved with structural design, renovation, and failure investigation of numerous buildings and other structures around the country. Most recently, he has been a Managing Engineer with Exponent Failure Analysis Associates, the country’s premier construction failure and accident investigation firm. Prior to joining Exponent, he was a principal engineer with a large architectural and engineering firm, where he was responsible for structural design of projects ranging from simple residential buildings to complex, multistory industrial facilities. His experience also includes engineering positions with a light-gage steel contractor, precast concrete manufacturer, and being a manager of the fabrication division with a steel fabricator.Mr. Newman has authored many publications that appeared in leading engineering magazines, in-cluding a number of award winning articles. His authoritative reference book Structural Renovation of Buildings: Methods, Details, and Design Examples, was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company in 2001. He is author of another definitive book from McGraw-Hill, Metal Building Systems: Design and Specifications, now in its 2nd edition and translated into Chinese. He has led a great many of ASCE sponsored educational seminars around the country for design professionals, building officials, owners, and contractors. Mr. Newman has conducted training programs for the employees of U.S. State Department, the U.S. Air Force, NASA, Iraqi reconstruction team, and many educational and professional groups. Mr. Newman is an adjunct professor at Northeastern University.

Day 1Foundation basicsHow to determine loadbearing capacity of soilsDesign of shallow foundations for conventional buildings– Basic column and wall footings– Combined, cantilever, and eccentric column footings– Introduction to design of mats and slabs on grade subjected to concentrated loadsFoundation design for frame-based metal building systemsMethods of resisting horizontal forces on foundations– Tie rods– Hairpins– Moment-resisting foundations– Formless footings– Slab with haunch

StRuCtuRAL REnovAtIon oF BuILDIngS: MEtHoDS, DEtAILS, AnD DESIgn ExAMPLESThis seminar-on-CD covers practical methods for upgrading all major types of buildings materials and structural systems – steel, concrete, masonry, wood and all pre-engineered buildings. It examines typi-cal renovation provisions of building codes and the issue of renovation versus rebuilding. The must-have details for upgrading buildings for lateral loads and rehabilitation of the building envelope are included. Much of the seminar examines problems likely to be experienced by building structures and specific renovation techniques to remedy these problems. Structural and civil engineers, architects, facility managers, building officials, and contractors will benefit from this CD. Includes a copy of the text by the same title. (Textbook; Newman, Alexander; 866 Pages; hardcover). 14 hours. 1.4 CEUs

DESIgn, ConStRuCtIon, AnD REnovAtIon oF MASonRy StRuCtuRESThis online course covers the basics of design and construction of various masonry structures. Special emphasis is given to concrete masonry walls, the most common type of structural masonry used today. The selected masonry provisions of ACI 530/ASCE 5/TMS 402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and those of the International Building Code are examined and augmented with commentary and must-have practical suggestions. With the basics explained, the instructor illustrates and discusses the design details and construction techniques commonly used for load-bearing, shear-wall, and curtain-wall applications. This course will provide you with the broadest possible overview of practical challenges that commonly arise during masonry renovation projects Step-by-step design examples and reference materials are included. This is an online course, all materials will be accessed online. Your log-in and password will be emailed to you within 24 hours after your purchase.
