FIELD STUDY TRIP Mt. Rogers and the Appalachian TrailEarn seven hours of credit when you sign up for BIO 128, ENG 224, andPED 229, which will be taught on location in the beautiful Mt. RogersNational Recreation Area, located in the mountainous, western tip ofVirginia. These classes will involve day hiking along the AppalachianTrail and returning to our campsite each night.

Experiential writing is very difficult to accomplish in a classroom setting,so we are taking the classroom on the road! We will utilize ourexperiences and observances during our trip to the Mt. Rogers NationalRecreation Area as a springboard for unleashing the creative writer in us.Travel writing is only peripherally about the place of destination; the realfocus is the journey, both internal and external. We will engage increative nonfiction and poetry using not only our observances of thebeauty and forces of nature, but also our inward reflections on thepersonal significance of The Journey.

Two pre-trip classroom meetings (May 7 and May 14) and two post-tripclassroom meetings (June 11 and 18) will be scheduled. Students arerequired to take all 3 classes associated with the field course (ENG 224,BIO 128, and PED 229). The cost for all three classes is $460 plus tuition, fees, and personal food costs.

For more information contact Bob Remediat (847) 543-2326, [email protected]; Mike Latza at (847) 543-2956,[email protected]; or Shane Jones at (847) 543-2885,[email protected].
