The o r i g i n a l town comprised l o t s 1 t h r o u g h 28 a t t h e n o r t h e r n end o f t h e v i l l a 5 Lo t s 29 through 5 2 , denominated on t h e L a k e ' s A t l a s map o f 1885 " c a r t h y ' s a d d i t i o n , " were l a i d o u t t o t h e s o u t h , a few y e a r s l a t e r , i n a c o n t i n u a t i o n o f t h e o r i g i n a l g r i d p l a n . I n t h e u n p l a t t e d a r e a s between Water S t r e e t and t h e Sou th R i v e r were l o c a t e d s e v e r a l i n d u s t r i e r s e r v e d by a dam and r a c e p o s s i b l y b u i l t a s e a r l y a s t h e mid- t o l a t e 1 8 t h c e n t u r y . These i n d u s t r i e s i n c l u d e d a f o u n d r y , g r i s t and saw m i l l s , a c o o p e r ' s shop , and a t a n n e r y . A t t h e p o i n t o f c o n f l u e n c e , f l a t b o a t s were once b u i l t t o c a r r y t h e p r o d u c t s o f t h e u p p e r V a l l e y down t h e Shenandoah River . The s i t e s of t h e s e i n d u s t r i e s l i e u n d i s t u r b e d a l o n g t h e r i v e r bank and on t h e i s l a n d between t h e r i v e r and t h e m i l l r a c e .

These were b u i l t i n a t l e a s t t h r e e m a j o r campaigns--one i n t h e e a r l y y e a r s o f t h e town ' s e x i s t e n c e , a n o t h e r i n t h e t h i r d o r f o u r t h q u a r t e r o f t h e 1 9 t h c e n t u r y , and a t h i r d durin,: t h e f i r s t q u a r t e r o f t h e p r e s e n t c e n t u r y . I n a d d i t i o n , t h e v i l l a g e was a t t h e c e n t e r o f t h e B a t t l e o f P o r t Repub l ic which t o o k p l a c e i n J u n e 1862. This b a t t l e was t h e l a s t i n Genera l Thomas "Stonewal l" J a c k s o n ' s V a l l e y Campaign, i n which he succeeded i n h o l d i n g o f f t h e Union f o r c e s .

The advan tages o f P o r t R e p u b l i c ' s s i t e were a p p z r e n t from t h e f i r s t s e t t l e m e n t o f t h a t p a r t o f t h e Shenandoah V a l l e y i n t h e mid-18th c e n t u r y . A m i l l w2s b u i l t t h e r e a t t h a t time, and t h e p r e s e n t r a c e may d a t e from t h e f i r s t c o n s t r u c t i o n . On J a n u a r y 1 4 , 1 8 0 2 , a n a c t o f t h e 1e: is la ture o f f i c i a l l y e s t a b l i s h e d P o r t Repub l ic on l a n d b e l o n g i n g t o J o h n McCarthrey. Tile neij town soon became a n i n d u s t r i a l and commercial c e n t e r and i n t i m e b o a s t e d s e v e r a l mills, a t a n n e r y , a f o u n d r y , and o t h e r i n d u s t r i a l e n t e r p r i s e s . A s t h e h i g h e s t n a v i g a b l e p o i n t on t h e Shenandoah R i v e r , i t was t h e p o r t from which f l o u r , i r o n , and o t h e r p r o d u c t s o f t h e upper V a l l e y were s h i p p e d . F l a t b o a t s o r g ~ ~ n d a l o w s were b u i l t on t h e p o i n t a t t h e conf luence o f t h e two r i v e r s . Once loaded w i t h goods t h e y f l o a t e d down t h e Shenandoah e i t h e r t o H a r p e r ' s F e r r y o r , by way o f t h e B a l t i z o r e and Ohio R i v e r s , t o Georgetown where t h e c o n t c n t s were s o l d a l o n g w i t h t h e b o a t s themse lves . The b o a t s w e r e t h e n deinol ished and used f o r m a t e r i a l s .

P o r t Republ ic was t h e s c e n e o f t h e b a t t l e o f t h a t name o n J u n e 9, 1862 , a n d was a g a i n t h e s c e n e o f s k i r m i s h i n g i n 1864. A f t e r t h e C i v i l War, t h e booming r i v e r t r a f f i c resumed and w i t h i t t h e town's p r o s p e r i t y . I n 1868, t h i r t y houscs were r e p o r t e d t o b e u n d e r con- s t r u c t i o n t h e r e . Al though t h e coming o f :he r a i l r o a d t o t h e Va l 'oy i n t h e ' 5 7 0 s a p p a r e n t l y depr ived t h e town o f much o f i t s former impor tance and o f i t s r e p u t a t i o n as a booming, b rawl ing p o r t town, t h e community s t i l l s e r v e d a s a c e n t e r o f l o c a l i n d u s t r y , m a i n t a i n i n g m i l l s , a t a n n e r y , i r o n f o u n d r y , and woodworking and wagon s h o p s . The e v i d e n c e o f t h e b u i l d - i n g s a l s o r e v e a l s t h a t P o r t Repub l ic c o n t i n u e d t o be a p rosperous r e s i d e n t i a l v i l l a g e as w e l l , sprin!cled w i t h t h e e c l e c t i c wooden V i c t o r i a n houses which c h a r a c t e r i z e d t h e l a t e 1 9 t h c e n t u r y r a i l r o a d towns i n t h e V a l l e y .
