Object: Findings: Detailed Study of Ville de Gatineau Sanitary Trunk Sewer Connection to the Domtar
Lands Redevelopment - Ontario
Mr Bentley,
JFSA’s services were solicited for the detailed study of Ville de Gatineau sanitary trunk sewer’s residual
capacity to evaluate its ability to accept additional wastewater flow from the Zibi-Ottawa development
project. Hence, a master plan was necessary for subcatchments 56 to 58, as shown in Figure 1, to
estimate the flowrates generated by each area, at their current state as well as their ultimate projected
state. This document serves as an executive summary and a brief description of JFSA’s findings. For
more ample detail, please refer to the complete report (JFSA, 2016).
LOCATION AND TYPE OF PIPE NETWORK
The area of study includes subcatchments 56 to 58 as delimited in the sanitary sewer master plan (JFSA,
2013). Subcatchments 56 and 57 are entirely serviced by a pseudo-sanitary network. As for subcatchment
58, a sanitary network is present. Figure 1 illustrates the limits of each subcatchment studies, drawn in red.
Also shown are Zibi-Ottawa and Zibi-Quebec residential projects, drawn in yellow and green respectively.

SIMULATION OF ACTUAL AND ULTIMATE PROJECTED CONDITIONS
Considering that the additional wastewater flowrates generated by the Zibi-Ottawa residential project will be
received by the Ville de Gatineau’s network and taking into account that this network will be subject to
considerable densification in the project future, the following scenarios were evaluated:
1) Simulation of actual conditions : Injection of additional wastewater flow from the Zibi-Ottawa project
into the pseudo-sanitary pipe (900 mm) on Eddy Street with actual flows generated by each sub
catchment;
2) Simulation of ultimate projected conditions: Injection of additional wastewater flow from the Zibi-
Ottawa project into the pseudo-sanitary pipe (900 mm) on Eddy Street with flows generated by each
sub catchment at their ultimate projected state. Ville de Gatineau projects a density of 100 housing
units per hectare for land currently being used for residential purposes as well as parking lots.
For the title drain contribution and for each scenario, a 100-year recurrence adjusted for climate changes
was simulated for the evaluation of residual capacity of Ville de Gatineau’s Sanitary Trunk Sewer
Connection to the Domtar Lands Redevelopment. Figure 2 shows pseudo-sanitary pipe servicing Zibi-
Ottawa.
Please note that, with the absence of flow measurement data for either sub catchment, the models used
could not be calibrated for this study.
Table 1 and Table 2 show the capacity of the conduit receiving Zibi-Ottawa’s sanitary flow as well as the
peak flowrates for each subcatchment and residential project, considering actual and ultimate projected
conditions respectively.

Worth noting the diameter of the pipes servicing Zibi-Gatineau’s residential project will have to be increased
to plan for the additional flowrates generated by the Zibi-Ottawa project.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The detailed study performed on Ville de Gatineau’s network has validated its capacity to received additional
flowrates generated by the Zibi-Ottawa residential project located on Chaudière and Albert Islands. The
objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of Ville de Gatineau’s current pipe network to accept
wastewater flowrates generate by the Zibi projects (Ottawa and Quebec), using hydrological and hydraulic
modelling software, for actual and ultimate project states.
The capacity of the existing conduits located on Eddy Street and Alexandre-Taché Boulevard was therefore
analysed in the present study. In fact, the capacity of these conduits is sufficient to pass the required flowrate,
without creating surcharge, from the new Zibi-Ottawa development of 52 L/s. The residual pipe capacities
calculated through simulation for each scenario were 0.39 m³/s and 0.35 m³/s for actual and ultimate projected
respectively. Therefore, we confirm that this conduit can easily accommodate the sanitary flowrates coming
from the Zibi-Ottawa residential project.
Please note that the parameters used in the hydrological model were estimated through hypothesis and with
knowledge of certain characteristics of the sector studied. Hence, if the Ville de Gatineau desires to validate
these parameters, a calibration using flowrate measurements taken at key points should be performed.
