Dr. Christopher Hughesin not your averagedentist. His concern is notjust about how his patientsteeth work, but also abouthow they look. It’s aconcept around which he’sbuilt his entire Herrinpractice around. Even thename Hughes Dental ArtsCentre reflects it.

“I think the nameemphasizes the artisticaspects of dentistry,” Dr.Hughes said. “As much asdentistry requires medicalscience and training, it alsorequires skills in artistryand aesthetics.”

That means that patientsnot only turn to Dr.Hughes and his staff forroutine dental care such ascleanings, filings, extractions and rootcanals, but also forimproving their smiles.

“We do cosmeticdentistry. We call it smile

makeovers,” he said.Services include teeth

whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks orother damaged areas ofteeth. Services added in2012 include Botox andJuvederm injections.

Hughes grew up inHerrin and is a graduate ofthe SIU School of DentalMedicine in Alton. He alsohas completed advancedtraining in aesthetic andreconstructive dentistry.Recently, Dr. Hughesachieved boardcertification in ImplantDentistry through theAmerican Board of OralImplantology/ImplantDentistry.

“We’re the only office insouthern Illinois that doescomplete implant care,” hesaid. “We do the implantsurgery as well as make thecrown or denture that fitsthe implant(s). That makes

us unique. In most othersettings, you go to onedentist for the surgery andthen another for therestoration. We do theentire procedure herewithout the need foranother doctor.”

For those patients whoare a bit nervous abouttheir trip to the dentist,Hughes also offersintravenous sedation.

“We sedate patientsintravenously (I.V),” heexplained. “It is ideal forpatients that want to getdental care done but aretoo scared to proceed. I.V.makes them feel sleepy, relaxed and less anxious.”

Regardless if the care is aroutine examination andcleaning or more advancedservices, the staff ofHughes Dental Arts Centre focus on helpingpeople look and feel theirbest.

Owned by Mike andTreena Wicoff, SterlingMattress Factory in Herrin, creates handcraftedmattress sets, MemoryFoam sets, adjustable beds, lift chairs, custom-sizemattresses, headboards, and accessories –everything for acomfortable nights sleep.

“The handcraftsmanshipof our mattresses setsthem apart from mass-produced products andprovides ‘old-fashioned’value that our customerscan’t see, but it’s there,”Mike said. “For example, instead of using thestandard one-and-halfpound foam, we use two tofive pound. It’s a differenceyou really can’t see, but itraises the quality of ourmattresses. Mostly itgreatly decreases bodyimpressions; and ourcustomers love that!”

Mike said that the

biggest trend today is theno-flip mattress. Sterlinghowever, offers both thenewer no-flip and thetraditional two-sidedmattresses, so customerscan have their choice.Their goal is the find amatch for the customer, nomatter what style ofmattress it may be.

Sterling mattresses areall in stock and ready to go,with custom orders usuallytake 2-10 days; most lessthan a week.

Sterling Mattress Factorycuts out the retail storepart of the equation andsells direct from thefactory to you. More than26,000 satisfied customersfrom across SouthernIllinois are testimony tothe store’s success.

“We can produce aquality hand-craftedmattress for about thesame price or less than amass-producing product,

Mike said. “Yet, we put inthe extra value that othersdon’t.”

In addition to havingcompetitive prices, thefriendly andknowledgeable “SleepFactory” staff makes theboth shopping anddelivery experience apleasure. Master craftsmanBrian Wicoff is theproduction manager andkeeps the operationrunning smoothly andefficiently to ensurequality and on-timedelivery.

A 1 Buildings have been in business for over 20 years, and build approximately 100 buildings a year. That is a lot of crews and coordination, but it is a labor of love, say the owners David and Leslie Andrews. Each building requires a rolled metal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to fi nd a reliable source for metal that was near by. That was not a hurdle for this innovative couple. The simple solution was to manufacture the panels themselves, so in February of 2009, Heartland Metal Sales was started and the company grew even more.

“With thirty years in the post-frame building industry, it was a natural decision for us to offer these metal services as well,” Leslie Andrews said. “We know what kind of quality is needed to build a good building and how to make it look good and how to get the job done quickly and on time.” Heartland Metal Sales produces a variety of metal panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farm structures and carports. The company can provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural application and complete accessory trim

components. “We also offer Energy-Star qualifi ed metal sheeting for building. This provides a tax incentive as well as energy savings that can help reduce costs.” she said. Andrews said that the company offers nearly 20 colors of metal, all produced to specifi cations given by the customer. Any length is available and with the wide variety of colors, we can work with our customers to make the buildings fi t in with their existing homes. “Our customers have been pleased that we take the time to work with them

and fi nd out what their needs are. Our building knowledge, coupled with the fact we can manufacture on site, gives us the perfect product for them. Quality, looks and an affordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 years and we have a great crew.” She said. Even as a new company, Heartland Metals holds true to the same philosophy that customers of A-1 Buildings have come to appreciate – high quality products and an excellent reputation. “People deal with us because of our honesty,” David Andrews

said. “We work hard to make sure our customers get the kind of job delivered we would want.” Heartland Metals and A-1 Buildings serve about a 150 mile radius and include portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky. They can be reached at their factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618- 983-5909 or 618-983-8600. www.heartlandmetalsales.com & www.a1buildingsanddooors.com website or email us at [email protected] & [email protected].

Neighborhood Co-op GroceryWhat do you think the

biggest strength of yourbusiness?

The Co-op is dedicatedto offering organic, local, all natural and fairlytraded goods to the regionof Southern Illinois. Wereally stress local. We selllocally grown heirloomand traditional produce;locally roasted coffees;wines from across theregion; grass fed, freerange meat, poultry andseafood; as well ascountless packagedgrocery items andwellness products.

What’s new?Right now we are

working on our Fall FarmCrawl, which includesover 20 local farmers, ranchers, wineries andcraft breweries that willspan 5 counties inSouthern Illinois. Theself-guided tour willhighlight how important athriving local foodsystems is for a healthycommunity. This will beour most extensive effortyet in helping ourshoppers put a face to thefarm, so to speak!

What is your best deal?Certainly our Basics

program tops the list.Basics are name brandproducts that we sell for

the lowest price possible. It’s kind of like a sale thatwe have every day on allthe staples milk, eggs, flour, sugar, meat,cheese... as well as thingslike supplements, diapers, baby food and femininecare products. It’s a greatprogram, but we also havegreat deals in our bulkdepartment where wecarry over 200 productsranging from whole foodslike rice, beans, grains, nuts, sugars and flour tosoup mixes, cereals, snacks and candy. It’sgreat because you can buyas much or as little as youwant and the savings are

significant, because thereis little packaging.

What makes yourbusiness unique?

We are unique becausewe are a co-op. Basicallythat means we are ownedby the community weserve, which makes usuniquely responsive to ourshoppers’ needs. We wantgood food for a reasonableprice, and we work withcommunity members, business and civic leadersand other cooperatives tomake things better.

What are you most proudof?

I had a very lovelyweekend. We had dinner

with our son anddaughter-in-law. Ienjoyed a beautifulSunday with my husband, our son and daughter-in-law with our three dogs. When I would haveweekends like this in someof my other jobs, I wouldwish it could go on andon, but even after workingat the Co-op for elevenyears, I can honestly saythat I looked forward tocoming in to work thisMonday morning and I doevery other day, too!

Why should people shopat your business?

Because we rock! Really, folks should shop with us

because when they dothey are helping usreinvest in our communityby giving donations tosmall nonprofits andlarger charitableorganizations. Shoppingwith us helps small-scalefamily farmers, localentrepreneurs andartisans – all of whom addto the diversity andsuccess of ourcommunity.

A Taste of Italy in the Heart of Southern Illinois...

The DiMaggio family’s tradition of authentic Italian food, family atmosphere and generous portions will make you feel like you are sitting around your “Italian” family table. “Where you are here, we are family,” said Angie DiMaggio, one of the owners. “I want to bring my customers a little bit of Italy, with great food and great service. We cook with love.” The DiMaggio family started out cooking pizza for their “other” family since they came from Sicily in 1973 and started the family business in Fairfi eld, Ill. Francesca and Gaetano DiMaggio’s authentic Italian recipes are now used in seven family owned pizza places throughout Southern Illinois. The DiMaggio’s children and grandchildren are now running the family businesses. A new DiMaggio’s is opening soon in Pinckneyville, Ill.

Son, Sebastian, who has been the chef at the Carbondale location since it opened in 2004, is also Angie’s husband. Other family members also work at the restaurants. Family is important at DiMaggio’s and that’s how they treat their customers—like family. “They are like guests in my home. I have my family, and also the family that works for me.,” said DiMaggio. “That’s how I feel about them.” Along with their authentic pizza, the DiMaggio’s expanded the restaurant in Carbondale to include pasta, appetizers, soups, salads and sandwiches. The authentic recipes and the freshest ingredients are important for all their menu items. “We make our own sauce and dough, and bake our pizzas in a stone oven,” said DiMaggio.

DiMaggio’s favorite is the thin crust pizza. “When it comes out of the oven, I still get the craving after 40 years,” It smells so good.” The menu also includes appetizers like homemade bread sticks, bruschetta, grilled portabella strips, and toasted four cheese ravioli. A few of the salad choices are Mediterranean, Caesar, Italian and Antipasto. Along with spaghetti, which is always a family favorite, other pastas includeVesuvio fettuccine alfredo, spinach Florentine, ravioli, cheese saccochetti, beef tortellini lasagna, portabella ravioli and linguini tutto mare. Cheesecake and tiramisu and other desserts, along with beer and wine are also available. The lunch menu, which is served

until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, offers good food, lunch portions, reasonable prices and quick service. Combination specials include pasta and salad or salad and pizza for $7.99, or pasta and sand for $8.99. Italian beef, the Sicilian sub, ham and cheese, a meatball sub, Italian sausage and Italian chicken sub are a few of the sandwiches offered. “Our lunch size portions are a great way to try something new,” DiMaggio said. “Don’t be afraid to try something new; tell the server what you like and ask them for suggestions.” At DiMaggio’s you might hear the Italian words, “vene mangia,” which means “come eat.” For authentic Italian food, made by the DiMaggio family with love, come eat with your Italian family at DiMaggio’s.

First Bank and Trust of MurphysboroBack in 1889, a group of

community leadersdecided Murphysboroneeded a bank. There wereabout 3,700 people whocalled Murphysboro home,a loaf of bread cost aboutthree cents, and that bankevolved into what today isFirst Bank and TrustCompany, Murphysboro’sonly home owned andoperated bank.

Over the years, FirstBank and Trust grew fromits opening assets of$69,547.28 to nearly $70million today. AsMurphysboro grew inpopulation. First Bank and

Trust was an integral partof the growth, supportingbusinesses, manufacturing, andagriculture. There werehard times, too, from adepression, wars, cropfailures and the Tri StateTornado that devastatedhomes and schools, andthe very fabric of life.

As the area facedenormous challenges, FirstBank and Trust continuedhonoring its roots in thecommunity. Today, successful projects thatfoster stability andcommunity spirit are amainstay of a philosophy

of progress. From theSouthern IllinoisSymphony and MusicFestival, Apple Festival,Logan Museum, Relay forLife, church festivals, toscouting, and countlessother community events,First Bank and Trust hasconsistently maintained aposition of financialleadership combined withcommunity service.

“I believe the success ofMurphysboro is in directcorrelation with thesuccess of the bank,” BankPresident and CEOMichael Cripps says.“We’ve been here for over

120 years; we knoweveryone and we knowtheir needs. That helps usbe in service to ourcommunity and meetthose needs.”

The growth of the area isdependent on the financialsupport of those who careabout its future. First Bankand Trust ofMurphysboro, still locallyowned and operated for124 years, will continue toprovide the stability thosefounders pledged, andoffering the most modernand advanced bankingservices.

Today, First Bank and

Trust offers threelocations, including one innearby Carbondale. Thereare four automatic tellermachines available and anew one coming soon onthe south side ofCarbondale’s UniversityMall. Making bankingconvenient, easy andfriendly is a hallmark ofthe way First Bank andTrust operates.

“We are proud to be atrue community bank,”Cripps adds. “Ourcustomers can come inand talk to the decisionmakers and the owners. They don’t have to wait on

the corporate officesomewhere else to make adecision.”

Those factors — doingbusiness locally andsupporting the programsof Murphysboro andJackson County — willcontinue to be at theforefront of First Bank andTrust in the future. Crippssays it is a very brightfuture.

“I think we have anunlimited future,” he says.“There are things that wecan do as we continue togrow to continue to serveour customers and ourcommunity.”

SIU Credit Union iscelebrating 75 years ofserving Southern Illinois.

Chartered as the JacksonCounty Teacher’s Union in1938, the SIU CreditUnion has evolved into acommunity credit union.

If you live or work in oneof the 11 counties servedby the SIU Credit Union, you can be long to thecredit union.

“We’re here to serve ourmembers and to serve ourcommunities,” saidDennis Schaefer, thepresident and CEO of theover almost-30,000member financialinstitution.

According to Marketing

Director Karli Feldhake, one difference betweenthe credit union and atraditional bank is thatcredit unions operate on acooperative principle, every member customer isan owner.

“We are member-owned, not serving a paidboard of directors oroutside owners,” Feldhakesaid. “It is thiscooperative approach thatallows us to provide betterrates and better service.”

Just $5 purchasescustomers a share ofownership. One uniquecharacteristic of creditunions is that membersusers of credit unions are

the owners, eachpurchasing a share in theentity as part of theirinitial deposit. Profitsfrom the credit unions arereturned to members ashigher interest rates onsavings or otherinvestment accounts andlower loan rates.

Members can alsobenefit from a programcalled “shared branching”which expands the creditunion’s six branches(Carbondale East,Carbondale West, Marion,Massac County, Energy, and a new branch inHarrisburg) intothousands of locationsnationwide. Shared

branching is alsoconvenient for collegestudents.

. “You can go into anyone of the 5,000participating credit unionbranches just like youwould into one of ourlocations,” Feldhake said.

Members of the SIUCredit Union also haveaccess to more than65,000 free ATMs aroundthe country — a networkis larger than those ofsome national financialinstitutions, includingBank of America.Customers can also make deposits, whichinclude an image of thechecks they’ve deposited

at the ATMs.New services also

include a free mobilebanking app.

“Members can managetheir account from theirmobile devices, includingcheck their balance, paybills and transfer funds,”said Feldhake.

Members can also applyfor a loan, includingprivate student loans, completely from the creditunion’s redesignedwebsite are in place.

Another new service isthe Consumer CommonCents Saving Program. When members whoenroll in the programmake a purchase with

their ATM card, which istied to their checking, theamount is rounded up tothe nearest dollar anddeposited in their savingsaccount.

“It helps our membersto build savings prettyquickly,” said Feldhake.

The SIU Credit Unionalso supports thecommunity by organizing“cash mobs” to encouragepurchases at localbusinesses.

The SIU Credit Unionwill celebrate their 75years of service to thecommunity with futureBusiness After Hours anda “Welcome Back toSchool” promotion.
