Aging well means being adaptive to new challenges andapplying the wisdom gained over the years. Considering wherewe have been, we also take a greater interest in our future.

In 1951, local attorney Fred G. Dicke saw a need for acommunity-run retirement home along with a remarkableopportunity. Manitowoc County had just built a new healthcare center vacating the old county mental hospital. With agroup of community leaders, Atty. Dicke formed a local boardunder the name Shady Lane, Inc. and converted the formerhospital into a retirement home.

By 1971, changes in health care trends and technologymade it clear that the old building was no longersuitable. It was razed and in its place a new four-story building, now home to Shady Lane CareCenter, was constructed. Finally in 1993,Shady Lane purchased the entire complexwith its extensive, manicured groundsfrom the county and added Laurel Grove

Assisted Living along with the gardens. Sixty-two years afterour founding, we continue to evolve. Challenging health caredemands have been met with the addition of private rooms,suites and apartments. Rehab at Shady Lane has partneredwith HFM Rehab Services as a provider of therapy at ourfacility. Our Smart Healing program focuses on restorativecare, wound care and a healing diet. Shady Lane offers thespectrum of healing and comfort including palliative care.

The opening of an on-site HFM clinic offers our residents andmembers of our community extended health care options. Asa not-for-profit organization, we are committed to providingquality at a reasonable cost.

The Medicine Shoppe in downtown Two Rivers is in its second wave oflocal ownership. In 2011, Marv and JoylynMoore purchased the pharmacyfrom Brian and Barb Jensen, who had opened the business in 1992. Allare local residents heavily involved in the community.

Since taking over, the Moores have invested in the business, adding asecond checkout, expanding the pharmacist counseling area, investing inan inventory management system, and adding additional staff (currentlyat 22 employees). These steps were taken to further improve the patientexperience and to expand the services offered.

One of the pharmacy’s most popular offerings is the Smart Fill auto-refill program. Patientswho sign up for the programhave their prescriptionrefill(s) filled automatically without having to call in ahead. If needed,The Medicine Shoppe will call a patient’s physician for refill authorization,and will call the patient when the order is ready for pickup.

Another useful service The Medicine Shoppe offers is bubble packingof medications. Color-coded packs make it easy to take the rightmedications at the right time of day, every day. This helps patientstake their medications appropriately and also assists caregivers in propermedication administration.

According to Marv, “We take the time to get to know our patients andanswer their questions. Our goal to help our patients get the most outof the medications that they take. This is why our pharmacists are alwaysreadily accessible to every patient who walks in the door.”
