2018-2019 Season Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra 3

Dear Friends,Season Twelve! Almost sounds like a fantasy. However, the reality of another

concert season is just around the corner with some exciting sounds of live music.Highlights for Season Twelve include Maestro and Friends on October 27th featur-

ing nine outstanding JCSO musicians in selections by Dvořák and Mendelssohn; the annual Christmas Gala on December 15th, with the full orchestra and Johns Creek Chorale with special guest, soprano Caitlin Hammon Moore; and the season will end on March 16th with a not-to-be-missed collaboration of the JCSO, the Johns Creek Chorale and organist Jeremy Rush in An Evening of French Music. Featured works in that collaboration will be Poulenc’s mesmerizing Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani and the hauntingly beautiful Requiem Mass by Maurice Duruflé.

Without your support and presence at our concerts we would not be celebrat-ing what is becoming for all of us “a tradition of excellence” in Johns Creek and the greater North Metro Atlanta area. THANK YOU!

I’m looking forward to another season of great performances and new friendships as JCSO continues to bring to you “the world’s greatest symphonic music” in the 2018-19 season.

Sincerely,

J. Wayne BaughmanMusic Director/Conductor

2018-2019 Season Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra 11

You may be surprised to know that we do many outreach and educational concerts throughout the year, and that some of your smallest family members may have been in attendance.

Perhaps the JCSO’s best known educational concerts are the “Meet the Orchestra” performances. “Of all the concerts we do, these are my favorite,” said JCSO Music Director J. Wayne Baughman. “We are giving these children an experience they can’t get at school, and they are learning that classi-cal music can be fun.”

Designed to introduce students to the instruments of the orchestra, this con-cert includes an emcee, Stan the Music Man. Stan, who is really an actor, brings out the sections of the orchestra one by one. The different instruments perform in turn so the kids can hear what they each sound like, alone and in instrument families. Inter-spersed with humor, instrument trivia, and educational information about the properties of sound, musical terminol-ogy, and more, these concerts are a big hit in the schools. Imagine the energy and excitement a percussion parade generates!

Last season, the JCSO performed two of these concerts—at Wilson Creek

Elementary School and Hembree Springs Elementary School—reaching over 900 kids. World Financial Group sponsored one of the concerts, and Kent Davies was there as their representative. It was a fantastic morning seeing Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra do interac-tive teaching and performing with these students in Johns Creek.” The other MTO concert was funded by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra also performs educational events with smaller numbers of musicians. Last Feb-ruary, Maestro Baughman and two JCSO musicians participated in Hillside Elemen-

tary School’s Artist Day. In an intimate classroom setting, multiple small groups of between 17 and 29 students were able to hear solo performances of string and woodwind instruments, ask questions, and even hear Shel Silverstein poetry set to music! Musicians also performed last March for Ocee Elementary School’s Music in Our Schools month celebration.

HAVE YOU HEARd OUR EdUCATIONAL CONCERTS? YOUR KIdS PROBABLY HAVE!

We would like to do more of these concerts in our community! If you or your company would be willing to help fund a concert for the kids, please contact JCSO Executive Director Linda Brill

at [email protected] or (678) 748-5802.

Jeremy Rush is Principal Organist at Johns Creek United Methodist Church. Mr. Rush stud-ied Sacred Music, Choral Conducting, and Or-gan at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, where he studied with John Walk-er and David Craighead. He is a career church musician and has served for over 25 years as organist, choirmaster, and/or handbell director for congregations of 100 to 10,000 members in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Mr. Rush had his first church organist job at age 13. At age 17, he was selected as one of only five students auditioned nationwide to perform at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists. In 1996, he was the winner of the American Guild of Organists Young Art-ists’ Competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Before joining the music staff of Johns Creek United Methodist Church in 2015, Mr. Rush served in various capacities at Northside Unit-ed Methodist Church, Peachtree Presbyterian Church, and as Artistic Director of The Atlanta

Concert Ringers. When not involved in musical events across Metro Atlan-ta, he can be found flying around the country voicing digi-tal organs and digi-tal additions to pipe organs for Walker Technical Company.

In addition to his church work, Mr. Rush serves as Communications Chair for Area 4 (Southeast Region) of the Hand-bell Musicians of America. He is also an accomplished solo handbell ringer.

The congregation of Johns Creek United Methodist Church decided that it was time to build a dedicated worship space. It was al-ways accepted as fact that this space – the sanctuary – would be furnished with the fin-est pipe organ obtainable. An organ commit-tee was formed and began the nationwide process of selecting an organ or organ builder.

It has long been known that rebuilding and installing a used pipe organ was less expensive than having a new one built. Trinity Church Wall Street had a very large pipe organ in storage. The church had removed the pipe organ from its sanctuary after the attacks on the World Trade Center. It was thought that dust from the collapse of the towers (just blocks from Trin-ity Church) had irreparably damaged the organ. However, this was not true. The organ was in need of cleaning and rebuild work, but it could be saved and reused. Trinity was not interested in using it and was persuaded by John Bishop of the Organ Clearing House to donate the or-

gan to Johns Creek United Methodist Church. The organ was removed from storage, in-

ventoried, and catalogued, during which time it was determined that it would cost in excess of $1 million to restore and reinstall. However, the cost to build a new pipe organ of the same quality and size would be over $4 million. The savings to the church would be significant. The opportunity to salvage a vic-tim of the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and use it in praise to God is unique. What a tremendous tribute to those who lost their lives on that horrible day. It is Johns Creek United Methodist Church’s distinct honor and privilege to lovingly restore and reuse this magnificent instrument of praise.

The organ installation began in August 2016. The organ was played again in worship for the first time in 15 years on November 20, 2016, fol-lowed by a formal re-dedication on December 4, 2016, which was featured nationally on Na-tional Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

North Atlanta Dance Theatre provides pre-mier dance performance to the greater At-lanta community. Theatrical presentations feature gifted young performers while sup-porting and showcasing elite professional art-ists. NADT is a sister company to North Atlanta Dance Academy. Both businesses are owned and managed by Michael and Kitty Garrison.

The academy provides quality dance educa-tion and is home to over 500 local students and families. The 38 members that make up the NADT company are all NADA dance students ranging in age from 11-18 years old. Each member is individually selected through an inten-sive audition process and their participation in the company is in addition to their rigorous weekly dance schedule at the academy. All members receive a year-long contract to train weekly and perform in 2 major bal-

let productions at the infinite Energy Theatre. We are celebrating our 20th year in Johns

Creek. Of all the metro Atlanta cities to choose from when we launched our dreams two de-cades ago, we chose this community specifi-cally for its thriving growth and its need for fine arts training and production. NADT has a keen understanding of how business and communi-ty relationships are mutually beneficial. it is of utmost importance to us that we serve to en-hance our community by giving back, volunteer-

ing, contributing wherever we can. Additionally, we bring the joy and beauty of dance to a community ap-preciative of culture and art.

It is with great excitement and anticipation we look forward to all the wonderful events we have planned for the upcoming year! Join us for our 2018-2019 season as we enter our 2oth year cel-ebrating Passion in Motion!
