briefslocal businesses encouraged to join innovation talks Entrepreneurs and business owners from Moreton Bay are being encouraged to join a focus group to support the local innovation ecosystem.

As part of an industry-supported research project with Innovate Moreton Bay, USC’s Dr Retha de Villiers Scheepers, Noel Tracy and Terrena Hooper are assessing the support needs of entrepreneurs and business owners in the Moreton Bay region.

Dr de Villiers Scheepers said the focus groups aim to bring together members of all industries and all stages of business.

“This is a great opportunity to gain insight into the Moreton Bay business community’s approach to innovation, support they need to grow and understand the role-players in the region,” Dr de Villiers Scheepers said.

“We know that innovation matters to Moreton Bay, but it is such a diverse region, so it can be hard to capture what the ecosystem really looks like.

“We want to be able to support all businesses – whether they are start-ups or long-time family businesses – to grow and manage the next phase of their organisation,” she said.

“To do this we need to find out where the key hotspots of activity are occurring, and this doesn’t necessarily mean only start-ups or entrepreneurs working in tech. We want the full range of expertise and ideas from the wealth of business knowledge that exists.

“Beyond that, it’s a great opportunity for like-

minded people from the business sector to meet and problem-solve together.”

A total of 12 focus groups, each consisting of 10 people, will be held from the end of August through to the end of October.

Interested people can register for the first focus group here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/usc-focus-groups-moreton-bay-region-business-owners-tickets-65880423119

The results from the focus groups will be provided to Innovate Moreton Bay to help them improve the support businesses in the region receive.

This proposed increase along with efficiency changes across the postal network, hopes to sure up the community post service and keep Post Offices open – including Australia Post's vital regional and rural network – keep posties delivering five days a week and ensure Australians everywhere can continue to access these important services.

Business and government customers, who send around 97 per cent of all mail in Australia, will continue to receive incentives to encourage them to use mail as part of their communication strategy. Charities will also continue to receive significant discounts off the BPR.

Since the last BPR increase in January 2016, the General Retail Industry Award has risen by 13 per cent, as well as many of Australia Post’s other costs.

heftY fines for fish offendersA recreational fisher has been fined $8,500 and ordered to pay costs in the Caboolture Magistrates Court for a range of repeated offences involving undersized and female mud crabs and not properly marking crab pots.

He was found at Cabbage Tree Point in possession of five female mud crabs and an undersized male crab despite prior warnings from Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers. He was then found a month later at the Burpengary Creek boat ramp with eight female mud crabs, five undersized mud crab and one female blue swimmer crab. He

was also charged with failing to mark six crab pots and found to have two excess pots.

Meanwhile, a commercial fisher has been fined $15,000 for trawling in a marine park and not having his vessel tracking unit turned on.

The fisher was found guilty in the Sandgate Magistrates Court of fishing without operating a vessel tracking unit on three occasions, and also for commercial fishing in the Middle Moreton Bay Marine Park Zone which is prohibited.

The operator’s commercial fishing boat licence has since been cancelled for non-payment of fees.

QBFP uses a range of techniques and technology to uncover illegal activities, including surveillance cameras and drones to catch illegal activities.

For more information on Queensland’s fishing regulations, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au, call 13 25 23 or download the free ‘Qld Fishing’ app from Apple and Google app stores.

ekka kids safetYIf you're heading to Ekka with kids this before it finishes this weekend remember to pick up your free identification wristbands which help reunite lost children with their parents.

The Ekka grounds are so big and busy, keeping track of young ones can be challenging. Last year, the wristbands contributed to returning almost 100 children their parents during the Ekka.

The wristbands have a space for parents and carers to write their contact details on them prior to securing the band to the wearer’s wrist.

In addition to obtaining a wristband on the day, police encourage parents to discuss being safe at the show with their children and to take a photograph of your child and what they’re wearing before arriving at the show.

You can get the wristbands from the Ekka Police Station.

conversations With Leonie

hello leonie,

I have been meaning to write to you for ages but now I feel that I really need advice: and soon!

I have the in-laws from hell. My husband has two younger sisters that are nurses and a mother that I have never seen in a happy mood and makes sure that everyone else is unhappy too. They have always been narky, sulky and spoiling for a fight. My husband is a complete sweetie and is a wonderful guy but his family always manage to ruin everything. His mother sulked though our daughter’s christening, my husband’s birthday and a Christmas dinner and his sisters got into a bitch fight at our wedding just to name a few of the dreadful family occasions we have endured. They really are a toxic mob.

They have all been living in Lismore NSW so distance has always provided a good buffer. But now the girls have both been successful in transferring to hospitals up here and his mother is talking about relocating to North Lakes. I haven’t slept since I found this out on Tuesday night and my husband is obviously stressed about it. I am sick of trying to get these women to play nice and I usually end up with a knot in my stomach just knowing that I have to have contact with them.

We are not religious so we are not trapped by that honour thy parents stuff. Any ideas, strategies or coping exercises that we might try?

name withheld

Hi,

I can relate to everything that you are going through and I feel that if you have tried numerous times and failed to stop their childish carry on, then disengagement may be the only answer. We can’t choose who we are related to, but we can decide what kind of treatment we will tolerate. Remember that you are both role models for your child/children and I feel that it’s important for you to demonstrate on a daily basis that you require respectful treatment.

Your husband may like to talk to his family and let them know that their behaviours are not acceptable and give them one more chance or you can say ‘enough is enough’. I do lots of family counselling and it has been my experience that once people accept that they are in a toxic relationship with a family member and then take steps to disengage, everything improves. Health improves, productivity at work improves, relationships improve and life is happier. I would suggest a five point plan of attack which you may like to consider employing:

disengage - don’t socialise with toxic family members and don’t participate in social websites like Face Book where your movements can be tracked or give opportunities for in laws to leave toxic messages on chat walls.

stay united - As a married couple; ideally you will have formed a united identity. Never let in-laws divide you. You love each other so why tolerate the one you love being mistreated.

Form an alliance, make a plan and stick to it.

Refuse to play the victim - We teach people how to treat us so demand respect. If respect is not forth coming, remove yourself from the toxic person. Don’t stay and expose yourself to upset of any kind. In this way you train people that if they want your families company, they have to treat everyone well.

be assertive, not aggressive - draw boundaries around what behaviours you will accept and be firm when backing these choices up. In this way you can protect each other from many different types of attack.

Refuse to be manipulated - often in laws will try to get to your children when they can’t get a reaction from you. If your children are old enough, let your children know what you are doing and why you are circling the wagons in relation to your husband’s family of origin so that they have the information they need to understand what is going on. It’s not a good idea to go into lots of details with children. Keep it simple and say that behaviour is an issue with the person involved and that you won’t accept their rudeness. Never use children as weapons but you are the adult here so you have a duty to draw safe barriers around your children even if it means protecting them from one of their grandmothers or aunties.

Above all I would say that people can only continue to treat you badly if you continue to let them.

til next week, leonie

finaL roundsnlgC FundRaising day with the bRisbane lions maRks the last day oF opeRation at noRth lakes

The day was planned long before the expedited sale last week. It was local action group Save North Lakes Golf Club's

biggest ever fundraising venture in an effort to halt the planned redevelopment and saw locals, identities, golf fans, pros, and the Brisbane Lions descend on the local greens last Sunday to tee off for the final round.

The sale and closure was expected by the public to happen later this year but The Village Retirement Group announced it had finalised its contract ahead of schedule last week and will proceed with plans to repurpose the land for a retirement village, aged care facilities and a public green space.

The massive turn out on Sunday was a fun but important day for the group who vowed to keep fighting the redevelopment. Unfortunately it was marred by reports of pilfering memorabilia from and security had to be brought in.

august is national tRadies health month, whiCh is the peRFeCt time FoR Queensland tRadies to eduCate themselves on Risks in the woRkplaCe and staRt ConstRuCting healthy habits

The most valuable part of a tradie’s toolkit is their health and safety. The construction and renovation and repair industries are

hazardous by nature with saftey from injuries in these fields paramount, But there are also risks in the workplace you can't see with the naked eye.

Awareness of risks associated with exposures such as asbestos and ultraviolet radiation are well-known but there are other exposures, such as diesel fumes and second-hand smoke, which may be less commonly perceived as a workplace cancer risk.

Work environments may also indirectly affect the risk of cancer by enabling unhealthy behaviours, such as poor nutrition and physical inactivity.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan urged Queensland workers and employers to use National Tradies Health Month as a catalyst to become more aware of risks in the workplace and build in control methods and healthy habits to last a lifetime.

“Increasing awareness and taking action to put in place control measures for carcinogenic hazards now will go a long way to avoiding the worst kind of problems down the track – employees being diagnosed with a cancer that can be attributed to workplace exposure,” Ms McMillan said.

“Cancer Council has developed fact sheets

around various occupational carcinogens, designed for both employers and employees.

“Simple steps, such as following work health and safety laws, winding up the window and turning on the air con if you are driving a diesel vehicle, packing healthy snacks, staying SunSmart and avoiding environmental tobacco smoke are just some examples of how you can reduce your cancer risk.”

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has identified over 165 cancer causing agents that workers are potentially being exposed to in their workplace.

Common carcinogens in Australian workplaces include asbestos, welding fumes, diesel engine exhaust, environmental tobacco smoke, UV radiation and silica dust.

Here are some simple steps tradies can take to reduce their cancer risk.

know youR Risk – and ReduCe it!

Start a conversation at your next toolbox meeting about carcinogens specific to your workplace. For example, many asbestos-containing materials remain in place throughout Australia, including in construction materials, insulation products, gaskets, friction brake products, vehicle and plant equipment, while crystalline silica is found in stone, rock, sand, gravel and clay, as well as products such as bricks, tiles, concrete, artificial stone benchtops and some plastic materials.

bRing an ‘esky’ Filled with a healthy lunCh and snaCks

Collectively, being overweight or obese, physically inactive, and eating unhealthily are second only to tobacco as preventable risk factors for cancer. It can be difficult for some tradies to access a fridge when working, which

often makes it difficult to pack lunches from home. This is where some forward planning comes in handy - try bringing an esky that is filled with a balanced lunch and healthy snacks, such as fruit and unsalted nuts.

stay CleaR oF tobaCCo smoke

Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of cancer. Those who smoke can obtain free information, practical assistance and support from Quitline, 13 QUIT (13 7848). Those who don’t smoke should also aim to create a smoke-free work site to avoid environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and Safe Work Australia outlines how workers exposure to second-hand smoke in the workplace can be controlled.

be sunsmaRt eveRy day

Exposure to UV radiation can damage the skin and eyes and outdoor workers receive between five and 10 times more UV radiation exposure than indoor workers. However, with workplace policies that are embedded into everyday practice, the risk presented to outdoor workers can be significantly reduced. That’s why Cancer Council Queensland recommends Queensland tradies abide by all five sun protective recommendations all year round – Slip on protective clothing, Slop on minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies.

If you think you may have been exposed to a cancer-causing agent, it is important to speak with a GP or health professional.

To find out what you can do to create a workplace that supports healthy choices to help reduce cancer risk, contact Cancer Council 13 11 20 or visit www.quest.org.au

LocaL youth ditching cars for PubLic transPortReflecting trends around the country and

across the globe, local millennials are taking longer to get a driver’s licence and using

public transport more according to findings from an international study led by Monash University.

This study was the first to compare the travel behaviour of young adults at different life stages and income levels in some of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities – Melbourne, Brisbane, London, New York and Atlanta, which were recently published in the international journal Cities.

All cities, apart from New York, recorded a substantial increase in transit kilometres taken by millennials over the past 10 to 15 years – with Brisbane the highest at 66 per cent and Melbourne increasing strongly by 45 per cent.

Brisbane’s transit supply increased more than any other case study region, with a 40 per cent increase in service kilometres since the early 2000s when the city rolled out its bus rapid transit network (the South Eastern, Northern and Eastern Busways). This change is a key explanation for the significant increase in transit use among students.

“However, it appears that the transit supplied isn’t serving the needs of young adults in later life stages. Transit use in Brisbane shows the largest demographic gap of any case study, with students

travelling 3862 more kilometres each year than parents of children,” said Dr Alexa Delbosc, lead researcher and Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Monash University.

London had a 47 per cent decrease in auto kilometres, and 22 per cent increase in transit kilometres. New York was the only city to experience a significant decrease in transit kilometres travelled and Atlanta had the highest auto kilometres of any case study city, but also experienced a jump in transit kilometres taken (16 per cent).

Dr Delbosc said cities needed to explore the role transit investments played in supporting the travel

needs of young adults.

In almost every city, investing in transit increased its use among young adults. Yet in Melbourne and Brisbane, transit service kilometres have levelled off or decreased since 2011, while the population continues to grow strongly.

“There is little doubt that as millennials start to age and start their own families, they’re likely to adopt more car-oriented travel habits,” Dr Delbosc said.

“But there’s evidence to show that being exposed to transit at a young age can influence travel behaviour much later in life. Investment in transit must keep up with this demand.”

Aussies are paying the fourth highest rate in the world. That’s startling enough but compared to countries with similar economies, Aussies

pay by far the highest proportion of their incomes in beer tax.

it went up again last Monday courtesy of an automatic CPI increase that slugs beer drinkers every August and February, Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan explained.

“It’s already a hefty tax at $2.19 per litre for packaged beer. [The] hike on beer will make a night with family or friends just a bit more of a stretch for many Australians,"he said.

“The CPI increases may not sound like much, but these six-month Government increases in beer tax are really adding up. Tax is already the biggest cost in the price of an Australian-made beer, accounting for almost half (42%) of the price of a typical carton of full-strength beer. Of the $51.00 retail price, $21.35 is tax."

“Along with Norway, Japan and Finland, Australians pay the highest beer tax in the world. We then pay another 10% in GST, including GST on the beer tax itself, at the retail end."

“Calls for a mere freeze in the six-monthly CPI hikes to beer tax just won’t cut it. All that does is lock-in the unreasonably high taxes Aussies are already paying. It gives punters no price relief."

“Only by addressing the rate of beer tax, which is way out-of-whack with the rest of the world, can Australians get the relief they deserve.”

New analysis by Economist and Emeritus Professor Kym Anderson AC from the University of Adelaide compares Australian beer tax with OECD and EU countries.

“In Australian dollar terms, at $2.19 per litre in tax for packaged beer, Aussies pay more than three times the weighted OECD and EU member average of $0.70,” Prof Anderson said.

“It will come as no surprise to Australians who have travelled and noticed the price on a beer overseas compared to what they pay at home. The key reason for the difference is the greater rate of beer tax in Australia.”

Looking at countries we typically compare ourselves with, Aussies pay many times more in beer tax:

18-times more than germany ($0.12 per litre),

15-times more than spain ($0.14),

8-times more than the us ($0.28),

6-times more than Canada ($0.37),

and almost double that of new Zealand ($1.18);

Heffernan says the analysis brings Australia’s beer tax regime into sharp focus.

“Australians are drinking less beer, and less alcohol in general, than at any point in the last half century. Moderation is now the norm for the great majority of Australians, who have a far more mature attitude to alcohol than decades ago,” he said.

“Last year Aussie’s coughed up over $3.6 billion in beer taxes – excise and GST. That headline figure is huge, and the day-to-day tax burden worn by Australians enjoying a drink is over-the-top.

“Too often it is forgotten that 84% of the beer sold in Australia is made right here by Australians. Local beer production supports the full-time jobs of 103,000 Aussies and it generates over $16.5 billion a year in economic activity.

“While we lament the decline, and in some cases death, of domestic manufacturing, it should be recognised that beer production has bucked that trend to see Australians making Australian beers for the Australian market."

aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You crossed paths with an old acquaintance and it has left you wondering. Do you let it be water under the bridge? Or do you go back and try to make a difference? Let it flow under that bridge. No good will come from that road.

pisces (Feb. 19-march 20) Everything seems to be falling into place this last few weeks. Those big dreams of yours have certainly come to fruit and you couldn't be happier. Watch your finances this week, Pisces. Those items you planned on purchasing this week need to hold off a little longer.

aries (march 21-april 19) With help all around you this month, you finally take the help you need. As stubborn as you rams may be, you realise this time, you have to take on that offer or you may just drown. Yes it is usually you that leads the way, has the impact to help others change, but this time it is your turn and you won't regret it.

taurus (april 20-may 20) You took on the task like a bull at a gate, and all things are starting to settle down. But don't relax yet, Taurus. It may appear to be sorted out, but you missed one vital piece and that will come to light this week. Deal with this as quickly as possible. Time wasted on it may cause you problems in the near future.

gemini (may 21-June 20) Those opportunities that faced you last week, start to take place this week. You wouldn't have been selected as a choice if you weren't capable of the tasks. Don't let your self-conscious get the better of you. Relax Twins!

Cancer (June 21-July 22) With last week having similarities to an erupting volcano, this week the lava starts to cool and new land has been made. That is the same reference to your situation right now. It was hot and scary, but now there is a new road to follow and follow it you must.

leo (July 23-aug. 22) Don't let others dictate your feelings about a certain matter this week. You know what to do, and you don't need others' telling you how to do it. Smile and politely nod. Then continue to do what you planned on doing. Listening to others may cause upset within your love life or family.

virgo (aug. 23-sept. 22) You always know best, Virgo! After all, you know what others' need and want, right? As right as this may appear, you can't help them this time. If they ask you for help, then help them you will. If they don't ask for help, don't offer it. This may be a hard task for you, but it is what is best this week.

libra (sept. 23-oct. 22) You seem to be unsure of a rather large decision this week. Discuss the options with close ones, because you find it very hard to select just one choice. Once you do, it will be full steam ahead, so buckle up Libra! You're in for an exciting ride!

scorpio (oct. 23-nov. 21) Don't hide away this week, Scorpio. It has been rough. Real rough. But now is your time to shine. Don't focus on what did happen. Focus on what will happen next. You can make this the start of something perfect. Your goals are achievable. Just don't give up on yourself.

sagittarius (nov. 22-dec. 21) You don't want to hear that other side of the story this week. Why? Because you already know the truth. Don't be too hard on those who try to help. You may not like what they bring or say, but it is needed now and you will gain from it in the long run.

Capricorn (dec. 22-Jan. 19) Work is on the backburner right now. You have everything under control and it is time to work on that love life, or lack thereof! This is your week. Take that chance! Say those words! Go to that place! Take this week as a chance to take those risks, as you will benefit from it in the long run

QueensLand theatre’s L’aPParteMent

Written and directed by famous Aussie storyteller Joanna murray-smith,

L'Appartement was tight and wickedly funny, even on its debut,

As a Queensland Theatre commission L'Appartement is relationship drama that is extraordinarily funny throughout but not clever enough to answer the questions it openly asks.

We arrive at the eponymous apartment at the same time as Meg and Rooster; young Aussies who had twins instead of a dream honeymoon but have just landed in Paris to inject some much needed adventure into their static suburban life, sans kids. L'Appartement sets the couple up against childless French counterparts, wunderkinds of cool and success, their Airbnb hosts Serge and Lea. What follows is an hour and a half exploration into the dynamics of married and an attempt to deliver a message that doesn't quite land.

L'Appartement owes a lot to its

two leads. Meg and Rooster are the people next door played by Brisbane's own theatre power couple, the amazing Liz and Andrew Buchanan.

andrew buchanan (TV's Harrow and The Family Law) plays Rooster as a charming if oblivious larrikin with a surface to scratch. At first, Rooster is unconcerned about the bigger picture or subtext but it's a ranging role and Andrew proves he has the range to match when the script lurches from funny to dramatic opposite wife Meg.

liz buchanan (Queensland Theatre's Twelfth Night and The 39 Steps) is a natural, dropping bombshell comedic chops all over the place as Meg. Rooster hits the obvious comedy beats while Meg heavy lifts the smart jokes and Liz pulls it off with flawless comedic timing, a straight face, and a wink in a wholly confident performance. This is clearly an actor who knows she's funny and can pull it off on stage without misfire.

Bookending the mostly two-hander are household name melanie Zanetti (Jasper Jones and Mum on TV's Bluey) opposite talented up-comer pachero mzembe (La Boite's Prize Fighter). Murray-Smith bestows the pair with some comedy whoppers,

which they revel. Their Serge and Lea, as owners of the apartment, are at the centre of the play's controversy over cultural ownership.

Set design by dale Ferguson warrants applause. The apartment looks like it was torn from the feature pages of a luxury architecture magazine and is lit by ben hughes with effects mostly plotted as weather, it's highly effective. guy webster's sound design and composition further embellishes the palette of L'Appartement and in chorus with the other behind-the-scenes creativity makes the set wholly believable.

L'Appartement is light at heart and brilliantly funny but appears to make a social commentary on the very modern dilemma of cultural appropriation and then either drops the thread or doesn't seek to deliver an answer. It's hard to tell. Regardless, art doesn't always need to tell us right from wrong and if you ignore the message L'Appartement is a whole lot of fun and a stunningly crafted debut.

l'appartement plays QpaC's Cremorne theatre until august 31. tickets via www.queenslandtheatre.com.au

reneWabLe QueensLandmoReton bay Region is top oF the ChaRts FoR solaR while Queensland hosts the laRgest wind FaRm in austRalia

The Uptake Of Rooftop solar across Australia has soared to unprecedented levels with Queensland topping the nation, a new

report from the Climate Council has found and Moreton Bay Region leads the charge.

The Climate Council’s CEO Amanda McKenzie said Queensland’s leadership on rooftop solar should provide inspiration to other Australians.

“Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy is essential if we are to tackle intensifying climate change and the people of the Sunshine State are rising to the challenge,” said Ms McKenzie.

“As a Queenslander, I’m proud to say we’re topping the solar charts. Thousands of people living around Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are installing solar, which means we are reducing our power bills and helping to address global warming,” said Climate Councillor Professor Karen Hussey.

The report also finds that Queensland is more vulnerable to climate change than any other state or territory in Australia. It is highly exposed to extreme weather, and has borne 60% of the total

economic costs of extreme weather in Australia in the decade from 2007 to 2016.

“Climate change is already wreaking havoc in Queensland. We’ve even seen fires burning in rainforests, sea levels are rising and flood risk is increasing. That’s why it is so heartening to know that Queenslanders are driving the charge to renewable power,” said Professor Hussey.

Key finding from the report showed that dozens of Queensland suburbs and towns now have solar in more than 50% of households while More than 70% of Elimbah households in the Moreton Bay Region now have rooftop solar - a national record.

While Queensland is facing considerable challenges as a result of climate change, there are also significant opportunities for the Sunshine State.

The areas around Cloncurry and Mt Isa are some of the world’s richest mineral producing regions containing copper, lead and zinc as well as major silver and phosphate deposits.

“These minerals are likely to grow in demand with the global transition to a clean energy economy. Copper and zinc are required to produce solar panels, while lead is essential in battery production ,” said Ms McKenzie.

“Jobs in thermal coal will continue to be insecure as the world moves towards renewable energy, but there are likely to be more jobs in different types of mining. Cloncurry and Mt Isa have enormous potential to benefit from solar and batteries,” said Ms McKenzie.

Queensland currently has more jobs in the renewables sector than any other state or territory. Projects under construction or about to begin will create more than 4,500 jobs in the state and deliver almost $10 billion in investment.

One of those renewables projects is on Queensland’s Western Downs, with almost 50 turbines now feeding energy into the National Electricity Market.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham today joined AGL to inspect the first group of towering turbines to come online, only a year after first breaking ground at Coopers Gap.

“Standing 180 meters high, with blades 67 metres long, these turbines are an impressive force equipped to harness the renewable power of Queensland’s wind,” Dr Lynham said.

“Work is well underway to get all 123 planned turbines up and running early next year, which is bringing $850 million of investment, 200 construction jobs, and up to 20 ongoing operational jobs to the region.”

The Coopers Gap Wind Farm, 250 kilometres north-west of Brisbane between Dalby and Kingaroy, has a total capacity of 453 megawatts. It is the largest wind farm by capacity in Australia with enough energy to power 264,000 Australian homes.

All that power is delivered into the electricity grid via a new 275-kilovolt substation, built and run by Queensland’s publicly-owned transmission operator Powerlink.
