Water Supplies ~ The Challenges

What Local Water Agencies Are Doing

to Improve Local Water Supplies

Conservation – rebates, workshops, water-saving programs;

demo gardens, tiered rates/water budgets and water shortage

contingency plans

Groundwater Management – addresses overdraft and salinity,

and uses diversion and storage ponds to capture water during

high storm events

Desalination – coverts salty, non-consumable, brackish water

into potable water; protects higher quality groundwater nearby

by keeping brackish water from intruding; remove waste salts

(brine) from commercial and industrial operations

Meeting the Challenges

www.emwd.org 10

Recycled Water- Useful end product of wastewater, used for

agriculture, golf courses, landscaping, cemeteries and schools;

less expensive than potable water, reduces the need for

purchasing imported water

Education – EMWD reaches more

than 65,000 students a year to help

instill a water-wise mindset among our

youth through facility tours, presentations,

water education materials, poster, literacy

and other contest
