FANWOOD – The Carriage House Poetry Series in Fanwood invites the public to enjoy an evening of poetry readings by Maria Mazziotti Gillan and Joe Weil on Tuesday, September 20. The free poetry performances will begin promptly at 8 p.m. in the Patricia Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue, Fanwood). Maria Mazziotti Gillan is the Founder/Executive Director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Com- munity College in Paterson, and edi- tor of The Paterson Literary Review. She also is the Director of the Cre- ative Writing Program and Professor of Poetry at Binghamton University (SUNY). Maria is a recipient of the 2008 American Book Award for her book, All That Lies Between Us. She has published 20 books, including Ancestors’ Song, Writing Poetry to Save Your Life, and the bi-lingual (English and Italian) poetry collec- tion, In a Place of Flowers and Light. Joe Weil is an assistant professor at Binghamton University who teaches poetry and fiction at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a noted performer of poetry and music and has been featured on PBS’ Fooling with Words with Bill Moyers, in The New York Times, and at the New Jer- sey Performing Arts Center, the De- troit Opera House, Poets’ House, and at Geraldine R. Dodge poetry festi- vals. Since 2008, Joe has published four volumes of poems, including Painting the Christmas Trees, The Plumber’s Apprentice, and The Great Grandmother Light: New and Se- lected Poems. The Carriage House Poetry Series is currently in its eighteenth year at the Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series. Poet Robert Cozzi to Be at Town Book Store WESTFIELD – The Town Book Store will be hosting another Meet the Author event for poet Robert Cozzi on Saturday, September 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. His new compilation, Blanket of Hearts, is his most inti- mate collection of work to date. An excerpt taken from the book’s fore- word reads, “Blanket of Hearts fea- tures poetry from Robert A. Cozzi regarding the often-harsh terrain and mine-studded landscape of relation- ships. From Haunting My Empty Arms to Flashes of Mad Happiness, he reminds us that love is worth the cost it demands of us.” Mr. Cozzi was raised in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School (WHS) in 1982. Educated at James Madison University and New York University, Mr. Cozzi has main- tained a daily journal since he was in the ninth grade, where a favored teacher, Mr. Kocum, encouraged his writing. Many years ago, after reconnect- ing with fellow writer and WHS class- mate, Gerard Yatcilla, Robert began composing new writing pieces every week, which he shares with his fol- lowers via the Internet. His followers are all over the globe, including En- gland and many parts of Europe, Aus- tralia and the entire continental States.
